October 6, 2010Ward Fined $15,000 for Hit on Shipley
October 7, 2010While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com
Sam the Savior: “The Browns’ top two receivers on their depth chart have six receptions in four games, but the front office did not explore a trade for Randy Moss. […] “It’s not a function of us not looking at receivers,” Mangini said. “We look at players every day. We brought Sam Aiken in [as a free agent on Sept. 25].” [Tony Grossi]

Tresselball: “Ohio State head football coach Jim Tressel notched his 99th win last Saturday against Illinois. That means that Ohio State’s next victory (lookin’ at you, Indiana) will make The Senator only the 3rd coach in Buckeye history to reach the 100 win milestone, joining Woody Hayes and John Cooper as the only other members of that club.” [Inside the Shoe]

Craigslist to the rescue: “If players are scanning the stands for fetching young females during games, it stands to reason that security guards are doing the same thing, and why wouldn’t they? They’re standing there, backs turned toward the game, just staring out into the seats. Could get boring. So, yeah, they’re glancing around not just for any trouble that might be brewing, but also for some eye candy to keep themselves entertained.” [’64 and Counting]

Haden’s future: “Rookie CB Joe Haden has had an impressive start to his professional career. After being beaten for a 30-plus yard touchdown in the season opener in Tampa, Haden has played very good fundamental football, his technique has been solid and he has been physical with receivers as he splits wide, with [Eric] Wright covering the slot receiver. After an up-and-down start in rookie and training camp sessions, Haden has exceeded early expectations and could gain an ever-greater role as the season progresses.” [Lane Adkins/The OBR – S/R]

And finally, consistently bad? “[Mark] Shapiro believes philosophically that having consistent leadership correlates to success over the long haul, although it is fair to ask if who in the organization, if anybody, ranks as a strong future GM candidate, now that Antonetti is no longer a “prospect.” At this juncture, it’s also fair to ask if too much consistency in leadership, for too long a period, isn’t ultimately too much of a good thing. (It had also been nearly 20 years since the Indians last hired a manager from the outside, until Acta broke that string at the end of 2009.)” [Lets Go Tribe]

There was no way we were going to give up picks for a guy who doesn’t want to come here and would complain even more than he did w/ a great QB.
the Browns have too few pieces to give up however many it would take to get Moss. I’d rather they get a great pass rusher… But, again, I think we should just wait for the draft, unless we can get something for nothing.
Didn’t even think about Moss coming to CLE when I heard he wanted out. Downside of his career, old, doesn’t wanna play for a bad team, etc. I’ll take Vincent Jackson or Julio Jones or as #2 said a solid pass rusher.
Hey, why shoot for Moss when you can get Sam Aiken? @JK – Everything about Jackson says stay away. Off field and diva issues. He’s 1 strike away from a year long suspension. I totally agree on the pass rusher though. The Browns needs, as I see them at this time, are: D line/pass rush, athletic LB, WR, and as always QB. The order of need is up for debate.
What do you do when the Indians have had the worst two seasons in a row in the last 85 years? PROMOTE EVERYBODY IN THE FRONT OFFICE.
I’d for sure add FS on that list as well. Elam has been pretty sub par ever since coming over from NYJ. But I’d agree that our needs are probably DL(pass rush), FS, WR, RB, LB in that order.
Can you imagine Moss in a Brian Daboll offense? No way that would ever end well.
No thanks on Moss. If we’re going to pay big money for a WR, I’d rather have one of the tremendous junior draft prospects sure to come out. Julio Jones, AJ Green, Ryan Broyles, Michael Floyd, etc.
