2010-11 NBA Blogger Previews: Cleveland Cavaliers
September 29, 2010Bengals Think Eric Wright is “One of the Better Corners”
September 29, 2010The Tigers and Indians were rained out last night and will play a traditional doubleheader at Progressive Field today starting at 4 PM. With little going on in Wahoo World, we thought we’d tackle an issue that popped up during Monday’s 6-3 Tribe win.
Miguel Cabrera, one of the game’s best hitters and an MVP candidate, was on first base in the seventh inning when Tribe catcher Luke Carlin made a snap throw attempting to pick him off. Cabrera landed awkwardly trying to get back to the bag. We would later learn that he had “severely sprained his right ankle” and was walking around the clubhouse on crutches before last night’s rainout, according to the Detroit News’ Tom Gage. We just learned that per Tigers.com beat writer Jason Beck, Miggy will miss the rest of the season.
Injuries happen on fluke plays all the time. The majority of players who end up with these ailments don’t point the finger at others. Unless you are a whiner like Cabrera. Don’t miss these quotes:
“I don’t feel good,” said Cabrera yesterday. “Look at me, I’m 260 (pounds). I’m not a fast runner. I’m not going to steal second. Maybe the catcher (Carlin) wants to prove he can play in the big leagues.”
As comedian Artie Lange once said: “WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.”
As the great John Bender once said in The Breakfast Club: “B-O-O H-O-O.”
So because you aren’t a fast runner, Carlin should just let you get back to first if he thinks you have strayed too far off the bag? Demeaning him in the process (passive-aggressively) is part of your schtick as well? Worried about your prospects of winning the MVP coming down to your last, meaningless, six games considering your team is a disappointing 80-76 despite a $122 million payroll?
Carlin explained his side. “A couple of innings before the seventh, we intentionally walked him. On the bench after the inning, somebody told me he was taking a pretty big lead and that I might be able to pick him off if he got on base later in the game.
“When he got the hit off Smitty [Joe Smith, in the seventh], I thought I’d take a shot at it. It’s unfortunate he got hurt, but I’m going to try and get as many outs as I can against that team. They’re a good-hitting team.”
The Tigers seem to breed these kind of whiners. Just look at the history this year. This is the same team that has a third baseman (Brandon Inge) saying the Tigers wont find anyone better than him this off-season. An all but finished left-fielder (Johnny Damon) who turned down a trade to a contender (Boston) to stay on a non-contender, and a team that started a bean ball war with the Yankees TWO days AFTER their manager called the alleged reason for the brawl – Brett Gardner’s slide – clean.
See Tribe fans, things could be worse. The Tigers are actually the Indians right now, except their payroll is double.
And they want to pick up Jhonny Peralta’s $7.5 million option for next year and attempt to play him at shortstop.
HAHAHAHAHAHA.

It would make my day if the pick his option up at play him at SS.
Yes it could be worse, the Indians could be spending big money and still stink, like the Tigers and Mariners. At least weve got some young kids to build around.
“Maybe the catcher (Carlin) wants to prove he can play in the big leagues.”
And that’s a bad thing?
What you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent post were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Anyone stumbling upon it is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Ghost,
If you really think we are in a better spot that Detroit then I want whatever you are smoking.
Hey TSR, for the love of Cleveland, just admit that things could in fact be worse instead of adding to all the catasprophizing.
Things can change quickly, momentum and team mentality is a massive factor. Have some faith, just believe.
I, for one, am totally stoked to see a lineup of a speedy, hitting-machine in Brantley at leadoff, a solid-average Cabrera 2nd, The One-m…an wrecking Choo hitting 3rd, The Smooth man Carlos Santana at cleanup, Healthy Pronk at 5th, Grady hitting 6th, a hopefully catching-on Laporta, a Home run slugging Jason Nix, and an upcoming 2B in either Donald or Brown rounding out the order. Then, I’m pumped for screaming fans and hard rock or metal blaring in the top of the 9th when the bullpen doors open and “Pure Rage” Perez steps out to close the door for another of his stellar saves. I tell you, people, all the pieces except for a few veteran starting pitchers are there. Fausto’s got it, and some of the rookies have already pitched some true gems, proving themselves.
As the late coach Lou Brown says, “All we need is something to bring it all together.”
Saddest part of this post: There’s a Tribe catcher named Luke Carlin.
This is the same guy that tried to fight some kids at a restaurant a few years ago. What do you expect?
And I agree with #6. I’ve never heard of the guy. Sad.
I agree, the Tigers are the Indians right now. Except with a much better record, far more money to spend, ownership that doesn’t hate the team, a competent GM, a more talented roster…
Ha! I love it. I’m a new reader and you just cemented my regular readership. I’m also up against the MVW in my fantasy final this week, so needless to say I love reading anything about this news. 🙂
Must be tough every year competing for a spot in the cellar. But some of the things you have said laughable, please keep writing – I always need a something to keep me entertained. Enjoy last place for years to come!
@10 – I loved the burger back in the late 80’s and early 90’s and the commercials were great too.
however, everything else you say is arguable to laughable.
1. a much better record – that isn’t anywhere near good enough to get into the playoffs (so just a worse draft slot)
2. far more money to spend – which doesn’t matter when you spend it on guys like Jhonny Peralta
3. ownership that doesn’t hate the team – yes, the Dolan’s hate the team, which is why they overpaid for them in the first place as lifelone Indians fans
4. a competent GM – so, they spend among the top4 teams in the AL and can’t sniff the playoffs, yet they have a competent GM? this is the guy who has traded for Dontrelle Willis and Jhonny Peralta as their big “gets” the past couple of years.
5. a more talented roster – you forgot to add “currently at the MLB level” what about their farm system? do they have young guys coming through the pipe or do they have to trot back out this same roster next year (with Peralta starting at SS…hahahaha)
If your fat ass was in shape, maybe you could get back to the bag without hurting yourself.
I would throw over on Cabrera as many times as possible in the future. If we don’t get him out, at least we will have him too tired to run the bases at whatever level he normally does. He will also pissed off and distracted, and in the best case scenario, he will hurt himself and we won’t have to face his bat in the lineup for the rest of the night/series.
How is this any different than trying to hit the other team’s star quarterback so many times that he has to come out of the game, or is at least less effective?
1. a much better record – that isn’t anywhere near good enough to get into the playoffs (so just a worse draft slot)…. We’re comparing the Tigers and Indians here. You lose. Also, does a better draft spot matter in baseball? The best players drop because they demand more money. Terrible franchises like the Indians pass on studs because they don’t want to pay them. This is how the Tigers got Verlander, Porcello, Andrew Miller, and Cameron Maybin (who they traded to get Cabrera)
2. far more money to spend – which doesn’t matter when you spend it on guys like Jhonny Peralta…. 7.5 million is a f’ing drop on the bucket for the Tigers. The Tigers have 70+ mil coming off the books this season. There will be more free agents coming to Detroit.
3. ownership that doesn’t hate the team – yes, the Dolan’s hate the team, which is why they overpaid for them in the first place as lifelone Indians fans…. are you really sticking up for the Dolans as an Indians fan?
4. a competent GM – so, they spend among the top4 teams in the AL and can’t sniff the playoffs, yet they have a competent GM? this is the guy who has traded for Dontrelle Willis and Jhonny Peralta as their big “gets” the past couple of years…… you forgot to mention that Miguel Cabrera was also in that Dontrelle Willis trade. The Tigers were about as competitive as the Indians are now before Dombrowski came to Detroit. He’s won a world series in Florida and won an AL pennant in Detroit. Yes, he’s a competent GM.
5. a more talented roster – you forgot to add “currently at the MLB level” what about their farm system? do they have young guys coming through the pipe or do they have to trot back out this same roster next year (with Peralta starting at SS…hahahaha)…… What does the farm team have to do with this year’s Tigers and Indians teams? Also, I’m not sure that Cleveland has the better farm system. Austin Jackson and Brennan Boesch will both finish high in AL ROY voting. How are the Indians young players doing?
“Yes it could be worse, the Indians could be spending big money and still stink, like the Tigers and Mariners. At least weve got some young kids to build around”……………………..
Please don’t lump the Tigers with the Indians. The Tigers are 2 games over .500. The Mariners are 36 games under .500. And would it really stink to spend big money? Wouldn’t you rather have young talent to build around AND spend big money on free agents like the Tigers?
if you can’t beat the Twins, Tigers people,
if you can’t beat the Twins, Tigers people, with 2 Indians payrolls, I recommend burning your stadium down.
I was going to ask what all these Tigers fans were doing on this site whining like Miguel Cabrera at us; then I realized it’s called Waiting For Next Year so they figured it must be for Tigers fans too.
or maybe they’re just pissed about the two series we swept from them to help get Cabrera extra time off between October-November.
