September 14, 2010CNBC: LeBron James’ Q Score Plunges
September 14, 2010With training camp tipping off in two weeks, the Cavaliers made yet another front office move on Monday by hiring David Griffin as VP of Basketball Operations. The hiring was first reported by ESPN’s Ric Bucher.
Griffin, formerly of the Phoenix Suns front office, will come in and attempt to fill the shoes of Lance Blanks who accepted the Suns general manager job approximately five weeks ago. Upon the firing of Steve Kerr, Griffin resigned from his role with the Suns after 13 years with the team, looking to land a higher level position with another NBA franchise.
Griffin (along with Kerr) is largely credited with building the team that made it to the 2010 Western Conference Finals.
Prior to accepting the Cavaliers’ offer, Griffin was courted by the Denver Nuggets to fill their vacant general manager role, but they were ultimately turned down due to a reported compensation issue. Instrumental in the additions of Channing Frye, Louis Amundson and Jared Dudley as key components in Phoenix, it is hoped that Griffin can bring his foresight to Cleveland where it will hopefully be a quick rebuilding (reloading?) effort for Dan Gilbert’s Cavs.
As Brian Windhorst points out, Griffin’s path through the NBA is much like that of Cavaliers GM Chris Grant, who started as an intern with the Atlanta Hawks only to work his way up to a high level position. Grant, the recent recipient of a contract extension, and Griffin will now be tasked with getting the Cavaliers back to a level of prominence – something that is widely considered to be Mission: Impossible following the departure of LeBron James.

What exactly does this position do?
I assume his direct role will be delegated by Grant. Though Grant will be on the front line and get the credit/blame for what transpires, all general managers have a team of guys who serve different roles (scouting, salary, etc). Grant and Blanks were 1A and 1B to Ferry for quite some time.
interesting. especially with us apparently going to a more fast style, getting a guy who worked with the fastbreak Suns for the last 13 years seems like a good idea (and therefore should know some do’s and don’ts about acquiring fastbreak talent).
Hey, he’s a Griffin. Good enough for me.
Or he was brought in because Gilbert has no faith in Grant.

Dang…let’s just start the ticker-tape parade now.
It’s interesting to me we are moving in this fast laced style of play considering there hasn’t be a “fast paced style of play” team to win an NBA title since the Bulls in the 90’s.
Last 15 years of rings have gone to all around offensively sound teams with lockdown defense.
