“Not long after LeBron James abandoned us to wear his Scottie Pippen mask, I saw a number of Browns fans suggest that we should replace Lebron’s mural with a gigantic mural of Joshua Cribbs. Photoshop was invoked, mock-ups appeared. Perhaps instead of making the same mistake, the Nike Corporation should pay for its sins by installing a different mural.
Instead of a player, let’s put our entire Browns team on the mural, running out to do battle. And have the fans shown supporting them, since without those fans, the team would itself have no point. Let’s not Witness the false adoration of the endlessly fallible. Instead, have the sign tell an inescapable truth of what it is to be human.
WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER.” [Barry McBride/The OBR]

Pay the man 2.0: “Phil Dawson, the only mainstay of the Browns since their return in 1999, clearly deserves a raise. He has quietly asked for the raise, not throwing up flags by not showing up to training camp, not to mention being the only kicker in camp and doing all the work. His 58 yarder, or 59 which he so proudly claims, furthers his thought process, and my agreeing with him, to give him the bump in salary which he so rightly deserves.” [No Logo Needed]

Suffering through local sports talk: “Now, if you want to talk sports on WKNR, you have to wait for the syndicated Mike and Mike Show (oof) to finish before Tony Rizzo comes on at 9 a.m., followed by more syndication with Jim Rome (why?) before Michael Reghi and Kenny Roda (double why?) come on at 3 p.m.
Think about that for a minute: in the 12-hour period from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., we only get six hours of local talk? You don’t think there’s enough going on sportswise in this town to warrant more than that?” [Red Right 88]

they talk sports on Rizzo’s show? Are they trying something new? I love Rizz but the rest of ’em make that show essentially unbearable.
Put a banner up of MattyFos, because I love all of NorthEast Ohio.
That 3pm show is double torture now with Roda teamed up with Reghi. I listened occasionally when it was just Reghi, but I can’t do it at all now. They had Doug L. from the Plain Dealer on to talk about OSU football after they were done with the interview, they were going through the listener questions they didn’t get to and one of them was regarding the status of Nathan Williams. Roda then says something to the effect of Williams had been arrested and OSU wasn’t commenting on it? What?
Williams had a knee injury and isn’t practicing. Bringing up a story that has already been refuted was really a hack move in my opinion. Maybe Roda should practice a little actual sports journalism. Also, why does Rome need to be on 2 channels simultaneously?
One of the many needs within the CLE sports scene: quality sports talk radio.
I agree with Max on The Really Big Show. The hater-gimmick is NOT entertaining. What I would like to know is… I mean, not only is there only 6 hours of local talk on WKNR, but they couldn’t even find a non-Steelers fan for 3 of those?!? Personally, I like the show on 1350 AM from 3-6 because I’m in Akron and they talk Akron sports.
Note on the mural: What would it be like being an Indian or Cavalier and seeing a huge Browns mural on your way to work every night?!? Well, they were the last team to win it all… but that’s not saying much. At least the Cavaliers and Indians have made multiple playoff appearances each in the past decade.
I say we put a big mural of Michael Symon up there. He’s a true, modern champion of Cleveland.
I prefer the syndicated stuff to Cleveland’s local sports talk. I don’t know if it is just me, but the quality seems to have taken a major hit in the last 2 or 3 years. (Probably following the quality of the majority of our sports teams).
I prefer not to listen to sports talk radio. It all seems like a giant circle jerk of ignorance and stupidity. At least on the web I can control the sites I visit (love you WFNY) and ignore content I don’t care to read.
Folks I talk to on the twitters know that I have a long-standing gripe with WKNR in general and Rizzo’s show in particular (and Aaron Goldhammer to be most specific). When KNR was doing its little OCB contest a month ago, Rizzo gave the specific advice to “be an entertainer and not a stat regurgitator.” Which, to me, roughly translates as “prep is for losers, just throw crap against the wall until something sticks.” These days, KNR needs more “stat regurgitators;” some might call them JOURNALISTS. Sports radio loses me when everyone is trying to be the loudest man in the room and noone is trying to be the smartest man in the room.
The best sports talk on Cleveland’s airwaves right now isn’t on the radio, it’s on TV: Drennan is once more the president of Cleveland sports talk–even though he’s been running unopposed for quite some time.
The two hours daily with LeCharles Bentley is the best two hours of Cleveland sports talk.
I find Rizz entertaining, but I can’t listen to his show because Goldhammer’s on it. Goldhammer is an unbearably arrogant, obnoxious punk know-it-all with an extremely high opinion of himself and an often-stated dislike of Cleveland sports and sports fans. He has made Rizzo’s show completely unlistenable to.
Reghi and Roda aren’t nearly as bad, but they’re still hard to take for more than an hour. Reghi just butchers the language and Roda shouts all the time and carries on like a 15-year-old.
So with that being the state of KNR, we need Rome and Mike and Mike. There isn’t anyone around to replace them.
I like the weekend guy on WTAM, Nick Camino. He is intelligent and not bombastic and he doesn’t shout constantly. Mark Schwab was the best, but of couse he’s moved on to TV.
I’d love to hear Les Levine back on radio. He’s smart, funny, and very knowledgeable.
“The two hours daily with LeCharles Bentley is the best two hours of Cleveland sports talk.”
…and that is a sad, sad thing.
You guys are lucky you have anything worth listening to in CLE. In Columbus we have M&M on ESPN (awful), then The Herd on ESPN (the best thing on 97.1 all day), then the Mid Day show with Spiels (love the man as a person, and LB but as a radio host he is awful) and Hooley (former Plain Dealer writer, huge tool). Then, the worst sports radio show I’ve ever heard. Common Man & The Torg, they are seriously boyfriends who just giggle at eachothers jokes, talk about their wives all show, and make fun of everyone. They always say how great their ratings are but it has to be because they are the drive home show in Columbus Ohio.
I would gladly take syndicated radio over listening to Tony Kornheiser here in Washington. It’s two hours worth of absolutely nothing to do with sports and more on Real Housewives and how he is so much better of a writer than any body else who ever lived.
I think the banner should be replaced by a huge image of Betty White. Her work on ‘Hot in Cleveland’ has done more for the city than Lebron did in 7 years…..
As to the mural- it should be a cleveland sports mural. Have the 3 major teams on it in some way to help celebrate the city and not just a team or person. Thats if they choose to put one up ever again.
As to WKNR- Xs and Os with the pros is awful. I cannot to listen to them thinking they are the god of all things sports. They are ignorant and think they are preachin the gospal with what they say. I would much rather tune into reghi or riz. Sometimes its awful and i just tune them off, but it is entertaining for the most part.
A banner of the entire browns team, me likey!
Really Big Show is all about the shtick…Goldhammer’s the “heel” announcer and plays up his smarminess to the hilt. It’s a gimmick and nothing more…and I don’t think he “hates” Cleveland sports…he just views it from an outsider’s perspective. Really, he gets on Ohio State more than anything else. I can take or leave Hammer at the end of the day.
The only good thing about Rizzo’s show is it means we don’t have to listen to Cowherd.
I miss Gary Dee and Bill Needle and Geoff Sindelar.
and Seward, I hear ya on Drennan, but the last show he had on KNR before his “vacation” was all about friggin show tunes and movies. Not what I wanted to hear while I was stuck on the 480 bridge in 8″ of snow trying to get to work.
Exhume Pete Franklin! Last decent talk show host in town. At least he made me laugh.
Well if you’re basing it on WKNR then yeah you will find crap. WTAM has some decent talkers at least.
