The Reason The Tribe Waves The White Flag
June 2, 2010Armando Galarraga, Jim Joyce, and The Tribe – Oh What a Night
June 3, 2010While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com
Could be a big day for Ohio State fans: “91 days. 3 months. When you guys figure out how to hit the fast forward button on reality and get to Thursday, September 2nd, please share your secrets. Until then, we’ll have to except that while we’re 5 days til the second holiest day of the year, STEELMAS, and a little more than a month from NCAA Football ‘11, we’re still far enough away for the wait to feel like Chinese water torture. Fortunately the Dayton-area’s Braxton Miller, by all accounts, has the sort of news that could merit a celebratory liquid lunch (or at the very least give us all a perfectly valid reason to fire up the Rose Bowl on our DVRs/DVD players after work). The electric quarterback prospect, essentially everyone’s #2 or #1 QB in the country, is all set to at long last reveal his college choice in a noon EST press conference Thursday afternoon.” [Eleven Warriors]

Sister Christian, oh the time has come… “As the Cavaliers currently hold the rights to Christian Eyenga the NBA player, he competed this past season in Spain. When selected, the move was made in part as a decision to not invest first round dollars into a rookie this past season, as well made in hopes that Eyenga would develop over the next few years to become a contributing talent, playing alongside LeBron James as a Cavalier. As you can see by the number that he wears (pictured above), LeBron even went as far as changing his own number to 6 next season in anticipation of Eyenga’s arrival. But should that arrival really be expected anytime soon? Not really.” [Stepien Rules]

Allez Cuisine! “One of the Cavaliers’ most famous fans is hoping the way to LeBron James’ heart is through his stomach. Cleveland native Michael Symon, one of Food Network’s Iron Chefs, has offered to go to James’ house once a month and cook a meal for the MVP’s family and friends if he re-signs as a free agent with the Cavaliers.” [AP via Huffington Post]

“You have to be serious about bolting to go all this way. Either that or seriously mistaken about how it would all work out. And in LeBron’s defense, most of us, at least here in Northeast Ohio were glad to let LeBron carry on with the off-court drama, not worried at all about what impact it might have on what LeBron continues to say is the only thing that really matters — which is, of course, winning.” [Cleveland Frowns]

And finally, some Browns contract talk: “Specifically regarding Jackson, all the signs are continuing to point to his disgruntlement heading past the June deadline and into training camp if the organization does not decide to at least make a minimal effort to start talks on a long-term contract the linebacker craves. And, more importantly, he feels like he’s earned and deserves. Personally, I’m of the impression that the Browns could really care less about Jackson or his feelings. They’re striving to do what’s best for the organization, and it appears that they don’t feel like one way to accomplish that goal is by handing a long-term deal to a player coming off injury.” [John Taylor/The OBR – S/R]

I know it has been said already by so many, but that call against Detroit was SO AWFUL! It wouldn’t surprise me to hear that the umpire has retired. He’s wading into Bartman territory.
Cleveland frowns is being silly. I just don’t understand how so many of you people seemed to be sad and shocked over the fact Lebron is going to do exactly what he planned to do. He signed a 3 year extension for a reason. To look for better options. Lebron is not holding you people hostage. What sense would it make for Lebron to commit now without seeing what the other teams can put together? I liked Cleveland frown mentioning the Magic Johnson signed a 25 year deal after his second season. CF is remiss when he doesn’t mention that Magic &kareem won a championship in his first season. The Lakers were a well contructed team before Magic was drafted. Bird? The Celtics(Mchale &Parrish) had also won a championship before he made a long term commitment. Jordan had every reason to sign long term. Jordan was in his fourth year when future hall of famer Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant made it to the Bulls. My point being with each of those teams, management gave their stars reasons to stay. The Cavs have not done that. Mo Williams? Anthony Parker? Andy V?,Leon Powe? Are you kidding me? Lebron should seriously consider leaving.
@1 – Honestly, I think it was a bad call but not as cut and dry as everyone and their brother is making it out to be. The ball was bouncing around in his glove as the runner approached the bag, you can see he was out via the replay clearly but real time that is a very tough call to make.
I think he should have gotten the benefit of the doubt but still it’s a tough call to make, it’s shame for galaraga he pitched a tremendous game and so did fausto.
@ Eric – What do you mean “you people”?!?!!!!!!!
And guys, there’ll be plenty of time to talk about the worst call in the history of whatever. Hearing Joyce after the game was painful. He knew he screwed up, and you could tell he took it as badly as anyone involved.
At what point does Jackson realize the fact of the matter? He’s coming off of an injury. I realize he wants to do what’s best for him financially, but he needs to understand that the team can’t take a chance, on a guy who makes all his plays 10 yds downfield, by signing him long term.
Play this year out and then talk long term deals.
@ Denny – what do YOU mean “”you people?””
@ Denny- you people as in Caaliers fans.
Denny – You may want to let Eric know to duck next time…that joke came dangerously close to taking off his head. Luckily it flew juuuust over it. I guess you’d expect that from a person whose team is in the NBA Finals but has nothing better to do then come here and harass “Caaliers” fans about LeBron’s free agency.
One time I said “Caaleirs”, after I had a root canal done. #novocaine
Do YOU PEOPLE (orange teddy bears) have any more Novocaine?
If the Cavs do not go through the paces of a free market, they will have no actual confidence. It must, at some point, appear like the Cavs are independently more desirable than something widely considered to be highly desirable.
If the widely accepted bar is something as improbable as multiple rings, and it seems to be the bar, Lebron is powerless to change it. Where there is an opportunity for the public to see that team in action over a course of years, his endorsement is implausible if he does not appear to have executed a bona fide re-evaluation. For whatever team he is on, that’s the kind of endorsement he must give it. If he just says, “I’m a homer,” then the Cavs will not appear to be independently more desirable than something widely considered to be highly desirable. The endorsement would be empty.
Given the cap, short-term deals are the only leverage the stars have. I think they must appear to be exercising that leverage and to be investing hope in a team.
(If he was just going to play the odds of multiple rings, he’d throw himself at the doorstep of San Antonio, Boston, or the Lakers. And they’d screw him on that basis.)
UPDATE Braxtons coming to the buckeyes. 97.1 the fan is reporting its a done deal. Great news. Soild Quaterback for the next 4-5 years. Love it.
