Timing of Danny Ferry’s Contract Expiration Could Prove Awkward
May 26, 2010While We’re Waiting… Brown Bids Adieu, Ozzie on Joe West, and Masterson Maintains Role
May 27, 2010Last night when Rick and I were sitting in the Tribe Social Deck area of the Jake he made an off-hand comment about soccer. It seems the world’s most popular sport isn’t good enough for at least one of the people who populate the pages here at WFNY. I like soccer. I love the World Cup. I got to thinking about it and I was wondering if there would be any interest amongst our audience of sports fans.
Are you going to be watching it? Are you all rooting for the U.S.A. or are you clinging to some other part of your heritage? I grew up with lots of people with last names ending in vowels that preferred to root for Italy over the United States.
For the US, they picked their final 23-man roster today, cutting seven, after yesterday’s ugly 4-2 World Cup warmup game loss to the Czech Republic. The schedule for the US looks like this in group C.
June 12 – 2:30 PM vs England
June 18 – 10:00 AM vs Slovenia
June 23 – 10:00 AM vs Algeria
After those games, the US needs to finish in the top two to advance. If they manage to do that, they will play either the #1 or #2 from Group D, which includes Germany, Australia, Ghana, and Serbia. As of May 26, 2010 England is ranked 8th, Slovenia is ranked 25th, Algeria is unranked and the United States is ranked 14th.
If the US advances Germany is ranked 6th, Serbia is 15th, Australia is 20th, and Ghana is unranked.
Will you be watching, or are you scoffing like Rick?

5 billion ppl cant be wrong is awesome, but i agree with the fact that shoot-outs are BS. Then again soccer has to most limited scoring of any sport, so the games cant go on forever…
I will definitely be watching. Not a huge soccer fan, but every time the World Cup comes around its awesome to watch. Hopefully USA can make a run this year.
definitely cover it!!
Will definitely be watching and will read any intelligent coverage you guys write on it. Keep up the good work!
Forget the World Cup… It’s all about the EPL. Villa is the bomb. And I will tell you why.. Lerner is the best owner in the league.
ok that was a bit tounge in cheek.
Butr I will be watching the World Cup for sure.
EPL is for sure the league to watch, and yeah…i hope that lerner winning in soccer translates to something for the Browns, which is retarded but whatever. Atleast it gives me some kind of stake in watching soccer, although i still like rooting for ManU
One reason to watch the World Cup…GUARANTEE the US or whatever team you are rooting for wont give an effort like the Cavs did in game 5. It is nice seeing athletes who have passion.
@Avory No one particularly cares to end games in a shootout, but don’t act like they play 90 minutes and go straight to it. Both teams play offense and defense for a half hour of extra time. Shame on you for either not knowing or not mentioning that. But feel free to keep on hatin’!
I would be very excited with WFNY coverage of the World Cup. Besides, I love the Tribe, but thier season isnt going anywhere and we have a month of banter about where Lebron will be next year as alternatives.
I will definitely be watching. This is a great event and I would encourage those that are unfamiliar with soccer to give it a look. “Hey Mikey, he likes it!”
this gets a big “meh” from me…while i dont enjoy soccer in the slightest, i dont have any problems with people that do like it…as a personal preference, im indifferent, but if something makes it interesting, like say, a one legged striker…then i may be inclined to watch…but otherwise, ill watch 45 seconds of a game, giggle, make a comment that a 0-0 game is exciting to spend 2 hours watching, call it footie, and then watch something else…
its probably because i just never got into it, but if everyone else likes it and is into it…sure…cover it…if somethin strikes me as interesting i may follow, but as of right now, unless they have Otto Orf in goal…i wont be paying attention…
VIVA LA HECTOR MARINARO!!!
Please cover it, that would be lovely.
Avory – Umm. The NHL concludes SOME games with a shootout and the NFL starts its OT with a coinflip, so there ya go genius.
Love the game and everything about it!!!
I to the US to play well during the WC, but I don’t see the the team getting past the “group stage”. We were humilated during the Conferdation Cup by Italy and Brazil. Glad that B. Bradley has decided to go with young and fast lineup, our achilles is the play of the backline.
Argentina is going to win the Cup!!!!
It looks like you already have 5 million “Yes, please cover it” comments, so here’s one more. I love the World Cup and I love USA soccer. I think it goes hand-in-hand with loving Cleveland sports. Don’t listen to the nay-sayers… the US team is actually pretty solid. A 4-2 loss on Tuesday to an underwhelming Czech team doesn’t mean crap… I think we had one starter who played in that game, the rest were fighting for backup spots on the final World Cup roster (and 2 players responsible for 3 of the those goals didn’t make the final cut). The real barometer will be Saturday’s friendly against Turkey… all the starters should be playing in that one against a team that was good enough to make the World Cup if they had the chance to qualify anywhere else but Europe.
I am a huge soccer fan. Will watch everygame if possible. I would love for you guys to cover it. Ohio State>Cleveland teams>Soccer.
the greatest game in the world IMO. Will resort to EPL and Serie A seasons along with following all the overseas US men’s national team players if lbj bolts. (not that i dont already do this anyway)
JK, I guess you’re the genius…name one Stanley Cup Playoff Game that has EVER been decided on a shootout? They play the actual SPORT to finish the GAME! Name a single NFL playoff game or Super Bowl that hasn’t been concluded by playing the actual game? It’s FOOTBALL (real football) to the very end. Name one World Series that was finished by NOT PLAYING THE ACTUAL GAME! Name one NBA Championship that didn’t conclude with a REAL OVERTIME TO THE GAME’S CONCLUSION! I’m not a hater, just recognize that soccer’s top event is inherently flawed because they can’t finish tie games BY PLAYING THE GAME ITSELF! It is so fundamentally stupid, it’s priceless! And William, you say that because they play an extra half hour that this somehow exempts the fact that they almost always STILL have to resort to silly shootouts?!? Who is going to try and score when there’s a shootout beckoning? If the GAME can’t be played to a conclusion, frankly, it isn’t worth paying attention to begin with. At least, that’s what they’re telling us. And you know secretly that this makes soccer a mickey mouse sport, you know it.
“Who is going to try and score when a shootout is beckoning?”
See, your meathead argument (REAL FOOTBAWWW – let’s conveniently ignore the fact that American football is a ripoff of rugby and is a much newer GAME than futbol) lost any and all traction it might have had right there. The game CAN and almost always IS played to a conclusion. Glad you didn’t resort to calling it communist, or queer, or anything like that. Because in your mind you know secretly that’s what makes soccer a mickey mouse sport, you know it.
Hey Denny, see any name-calling in my posts? Just calling soccer what it is: a nice little game anyone can play with a ball, four posts, and a field; one that hasn’t much evolved past that point, that’s all. If it had, it wouldn’t have guys lining up for shootouts, players pulling their shirts off, and blowing kisses to the crowd. Oh, and faking injuries at every moment, then miraculously rising like some healer smacked ’em on their foreheads. Silly game. Hey, enjoy your World Cup, particularly after the US gets booted, and no one gives a hoot over here. Which wouldn’t happen, of course, if the games were otherwise interesting to watch. Line ’em up, boys, whoever kicks the most balls in, wins the World Cup! Yippee!
