Cavaliers Preview #48: Cavs at Indiana Pacers
January 29, 2010Cavs 94, Pacers 73: Win Streak Reaches Season-High Seven Games

An interesting concept here with the beginning of the buzz. Considering the fact that the #FreeAntawn movement still has three more weeks left, this could be something to look at down the road: “One source close to the situation told ESPN.com that Arenas ultimately landing in Cleveland with the team that has regularly tortured the Wizards in recent seasons — as a sidekick whose arrival would theoretically help the Cavs ensure the re-signing of LeBron James — is a legit possibility to file away.” [Marc Stein/Weekend Dime]
Bill Simmons posted his top 15 rankings of the most tortured franchises in sports yesterday afternoon. Definite must-read for all Cleveland fans out there as our three beloved teams made the top ten complete with this claim about LeBron and the Cavaliers: “For all we know, this season is their last chance with LeBron. It’s going to be like a mutant version of the 1992 Pirates during Barry Bonds’ last season — desperation mixed with urgency — but in this case, Cavs fans won’t have the ‘We Are Family’ title from 1979 to cushion the blow if things go wrong. Just writing about this makes me uneasy.” [ESPN.com]
Another in the long line of general trade articles for the Cavaliers over the next three weeks, but this one bring up the haunted memories of 2008-2009: “The burning question remains if GM Danny Ferry will pull the trigger on a deal even though his team already boasts one of the best records in the NBA. He encountered the same situation last year and decided to stand pat and not move the expiring contract of Wally Szczerbiak.” [Patrick Daher/RealGM.com]
Quite the tip of the hat to Josh Cribbs down in Miami for his courteous actions with the Pro Bowl: “Cribbs explained Thursday how he’s going to honor the teammates who helped him get to his second Pro Bowl. He brought nine of his core special teams blockers — Jerome Harrison, Lawrence Vickers, Blake Costanzo, Nick Sorensen and Ray Ventrone among them — in for Pro Bowl week, and he’s going to rotate wearing their jerseys the rest of the week, including Sunday’s game.” [Frank Tadych/NFL.com]
In an odd turn of events, former Browns head coach Chris Palmer will be moving out to the UFL to become a head coach again next season: “Palmer announced his ‘retirement’ Friday after 20 years as an NFL coach. He is expected to soon be named the new head coach of the UFL’s New York Sentinels, who are reportedly moving to Hartford next season.” [Ralph Vacchiano/New York Daily News and Randy Ward/Browns Gab]
Jordan Hicks deciding upon Texas yesterday afternoon continued the moderately sub-par recruiting season for Tressel and tOSU: “It was the latest in a line of missed high-profile connections for the Buckeyes this recruiting season. So far, Ohio State has commitments from only two of the top 10 players in Ohio according to Rivals.com and three of the top 10 according to Scout.com, after signing at least six of the top 10 Ohio players in three of the previous four years.” [Doug Lesmerises/Cleveland Plain Dealer]

If Gils contract gets voided, and we get to agree to new terms I’m all for it.
And Cribbs never stops amazing me.
“Lost some “tortured” street cred because “Major League” and “Major League 2″ have been on cable so often that 30.9 percent of Americans now mistakenly believe that Charlie Sheen was the 1994 World Series MVP” – Bill Simmons on the Tribe…
I choose to believe that Charlie Sheen WAS the 94 World Series MVP
A crazy, one dimensional, ball dominating chucker with a bad knee? No thanks.
No to Gil! The word is starting to come out about him here in DC. It is not good. The whole gun issue aside, the disfunction in the Wizards locker room has been unreal. Why can a team with a lot of talent (Arenas, Butler, Jamison and a servicable center in Haywood) never get anywhere? Gil. Arenas cant figure out what he wants to be on the court and is a disaster off it. No thank you.
Also, look at what he brings physically. Smaller point/shooting guard (dosent quite fit either spot very well) who has had 3 major knee operations in 3 years and seems to have lost his explosiveness. Oh, and one of the most indifferent defenders I have ever seen. Let someone else roll the dice with that head case. We are not that desperate.
Arenas in Cleveland? Yeah, right.
He basically has Mo’s body type and skill set with a worse attitude, a tendency to dominate the ball and more questionable shot selection. Not to mention how many games he’s had to miss over the last few years because of his injuries.
His D is absolutely atrocious. With the knee surgeries, he has lost the important lateral movement speed that is really needed for good perimeter D. Useless for us.
While I’m a no on Arenas as well, let’s please not compare his body type OR his skill set to Mo. Arenas is 5x the scorer that Mo is.
gilbert arenas doesn’t deserve to play for an organization like ours, teammates like ours, and fans like ours…thats a fact jack!
Wow is there anyone out there that’s a better guy than Josh Cribbs?
Interest Zero.
Arenas and West now that would be an EXPLOSIVE combination! 😉
“These aren’t the Wizards you’re looking for…”
No way to Agent Zero
No thanks, Arenas has not done a thing to make me want him in Cleveland. In fact everything he’s done makes me want him to stay away from here!
Only way I’d consider it is if LeBron wants it and this keeps him here. But he is a headcase, hasn’t won anything, gets hurt a lot, and has an awful contract. So I have many reservations.
Jack, it might interest you to know that Mo’s FG% and 3Pt% are both significantly higher than Arenas’s. Arenas scores more points per game, but Mo hits his shots more often, making him the more efficient scorer. And before you go with the “but Mo just gets better shots off passes from LeBron”, I might point out that I’d rather have a player taking good shots off of a pass than creating their own bad shot.
Terrible call on Arenas. He’s played 42 games in the last 3 seasons… get real.
@Dude Bro Guy: It’s the Grant Hill theory. The guy took three seasons off and now he can play an extra three seasons. At least Gil’s legs will be fresh.
