Ok, ok, enough trade talk out of me for a little while. But still, you’re stuck with me for the rest of the day, so you’re stuck with Cavaliers coverage. And next up, we talk about the All-Star rosters being announced today. Well, not so much announced, as leaked. Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski and Marc Spears gave us the list of All-Star Reserves, and here’s how the teams shape up:
So there you have it. No Mo Williams. The NBA’s best record, but only one All-Star on the team. As Brian Windhorst was quick to point out in his Twitter account, “Paul Pierce, Joe Johnson & Al Horford make it says Yahoo! So 3 Celtics (Garnett), 2 Hawks, 1 Cavalier”.
I guess that’s just how it goes. There’s a strong perception out there that this team is just LeBron James and a bunch of role players, and when you see the Cavs winning games without Mo Williams and Delonte West, it’s hard to refute that, if I’m being honest. I think Mo’s injury made the decision to leave him off the roster easier, but I don’t think it was a deciding factor. He probably wouldn’t have made it anyway. It looks like Iverson’s egregious whoring of an All-Star spot cost Mo a shot at a symbolic nod of approval for what he means to this team.
If I were to argue Mo’s case, I would have to argue that someone on the team shouldn’t be there. Since the braindead NBA fanbase voted Iverson to an unimpeachable spot on this team, that didn’t leave us much wiggle room. Rondo and Johnson each deserve the reserve guard spots more than Mo does. They just do. They’ve had better seasons than Mo.
If I were to make an argument, it would be for Mo over Derrick Rose in one of the wildcard spots. Their numbers are fairly close: Rose = 19.8 ppg, 5.9 apg, 2.8 TOpg, 0.8 spg, .477 FG%, .235 3P%, .751 FT%, 17.82 PER; Williams = 16.9 ppg, 5.1 apg, 2.7 TOpg, 1.2 spg, .446 FG%, .429 3P%, .897 FT%, 16.39 PER. With their numbers relatively similar, I would think Mo deserves the nod because he’s put those numbers on a team that’s 36-11 and tops in the Conference while Rose is doing it on a 22-22 team fighting for the last playoff spot.
So that’s the All-Star rosters, and once again the coaches left Mo Williams off the team. I’m not ready to call it a snub because I think you could argue David Lee deserves one of the wild card spots more than either Mo or Rose, but lets hear what you guys think. Did Mo deserve to be an All-Star, or did the NBA get it right?
