Best high school player of the decade: “This is what his high school coach said: “He had the best hand-eye coordination and the best reflexes I’d ever seen. He did things that you can’t teach.”
And this is what the scout said: “He has the longest arms of any player I’ve seen. He has huge hands and can outleap anyone. In 20 years of doing this, he’s one of the top 10 prospects I’ve seen at his position.”
This is where I tell you that they were talking about LeBron James. The high school football player. This is where you know that the State Farm-sponsored fantasy would not have been so far fetched.” [Ryan Jones/SLAMOnline]

Gold gloves are overrated: “Many pitchers from poor teams are underrated because nearly everyone forms an opinion of a pitcher based on his ERA yet Cleveland, Chicago, Minnesota and Kansas City had terrible defenses last year which pretty much made most of the pitchers from those teams seem to the untrained eye much worse than they actually were. […] Whether it is fair or not for these pitchers personally, the difference between them having a good and bad defense can end up costing that pitcher millions of dollars in contract money during their career.” [Waves of Arms]

Back in 2003… “That Christmas Day, [Tracy McGrady] and [LeBron James] were two ships passing in the night. I didn’t realize it then, but T-Mac would soon be greatly diminished, while LeBron would ascend to heights that make us all nauseous. For a few hours, though, they crossed paths: McGrady at his finest vintage, LeBron for the first time displaying the “I can do anything” game that’s made him the cosmic force he is today.” [Bethlehem Shoals/The Baseline]

And finally, some Rose Bowl news… “In the absence of receiver Ray Small, suspended for the game, the Buckeyes are looking for a primary punt returner, as well as a kick returner to pair with Lamaar Thomas. Receiver Dane Sanzenbacher said Monday that he expected receiver DeVier Posey to serve as the primary punt returner. Posey, Sanzenbacher and running back Jordan Hall were among the players fielding punts at practice. ” [Doug Lesmerises/PD]

Sanz, Hall and Posey couldn’t really do worse than Small.. Seemed like he fumbled just about every punt that came his way. What a dissappointing recruit. Id say just a little less than Zwick.
the article on Lebron has my head swimming…

I remember Clay being good, but I forgot just how good he really was. He does deserve HoF consideration.
