WFNY Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes…
December 1, 2009While We’re Waiting… More Ex-Jets, The Shoppach PTBNL, and Z’s Bright Side
December 2, 2009Well, hello there, readers. If you’re reading this post, you have likely noticed that things look a bit different around these parts. And, as with most change, this one is for the better. Upgrading the old while adding some new.
So, what all is different? Come inside and take a look…
The Header
The first thing you all likely saw was our brand new header. And at first glance, you probably asked yourself “What? Why is the header only reflecting one team!?” Well, that is because our site header is now actually three different headers that reflect the three teams that are covered the most here at WFNY – The Cavs, Browns and Indians. Don’t believe me? Hit the F5 key. Pretty sweet, eh?
We kept the same old school logos from the prior layout, but added more defined colors with crisp lines, a little contrast and a bit more space.
The Tabs
Along with the random header, the next best feature of the new site is the trio of tabs located to the right. Say you’re fed up with the Browns, and only care about the Indians when they’re playing, but you don’t feel like scrolling all over and looking for the recent Cavaliers posts. Well, click on the tab that says “Cavaliers,” and boom, Cavs.
This feature is not only cleaner from a site layout perspective, but makes accessing what you want that much easier.
The Fonts
If you’re currently looking at The Cavaliers header, the main title fonts are the exact same wine color that you see up top. The links change to gold when you hover over them. A Browns header, you have orange and brown. The Tribe gets a navy and red. Uniformity is good.
All fonts are now on a light gray background that we all felt is a little better on the eyes than the prior cream-like background. We hope you agree.
The Footer
Another aspect of the new layout that we’re very excited about is the footer. Previously, we had a bunch of real estate that was unused and we were forced to clutter up the sidebars with various items. Now, all of our social networking links are below along with the most recent comments and our legal jargon.
This move allows us to keep only the most pertinent information in the sidebars.
The Search Bar
Previously, if you wanted to search for something specific, you had to wait for both sidebars to load. Now, our search bar is at the very top of the screen awaiting your command.
Social Media
A fan of social media? A fan of WFNY? Well if you feel like sharing what you’re reading with the rest of your friends on various web sites, we have a handful of options which you can choose from to let the world know what you’re reading. The six icons (Facebook, Twitter, Digg, Reddit, Delicious and Stumble Upon) are located in the bottom, right hand corner of each post.

Of course, this is all just the tip of the iceberg. It’s something that we’re really excited about, and hope that you feel the same way. Many thanks to GrandmasterB for taking the time and putting this together – we had a ton of concepts and he was able to make it all happen. Any and all feedback is very appreciated either in the comments of this post or the tips address in the sidebar.
Thank you all for making this change possible, and we hope you’ll be around for a while to enjoy it with us.
Cheers!

liking the new setup…good work
Very nice. It would be super sweet if you could respond to somebody’s comment by clicking on the original and then having your comment show up directly under the original. It’s going to get ugly w/o numbers on the comments.
how do i add a picture by my name when i post? and is there going to be time stamps on everyones posts like before?
Finally…change I CAN believe in. I love it guys. FANTASTIC!
(Denny is just how I pictured him – a loveable drunk who could be my big brother/role model!)
Very slick.
However, I disagree that the gray background is good (maybe a bit lighter would be fine). If a gray background was superior for reading why does every major webpage do black on white? Contrast is king.
Similarly, the red text in the footer is basically unreadable.
I definitely like the simpler header, and overall the site has a much smoother look.
Hmmm…still trying to figure the Avatar thing out….I see on the right side it says sign in and you need a wordpress account….problem is I sign in with my wordpress.com account and it says it doesn’t exist…when I go to wordpress.com it works like a gem….I’m sure we’ll all figure it out in due time
awesome….got it somehow haha
I think the better question is: You guys have a myspace account … creepers
@ REEPJP – seems like WP takes a bit to figure everything out. It took a bit last night for Andrew’s picture to show up, and Rick’s hasn’t changed yet, even though he changed it and it shows up differently in our Dash.
@ Jay – a few things. 1) I’m not drinking, I actually have a pint glass for a nose. 2) I’m 5’8 so I’m probably not a good candidate for a ‘big’ brother. 3) I like to picture Denny as the lead singer to Lynyrd Skynyrd, and I’m in the front row – hammered drunk!
@ – Nlzzzzz – that wasn’t a question :/
Love the new layout guys! one suggestion – how about a timestamp on the comments?
LMAO Denny! Just don’t come at me like a spider monkey.
I need to go to wordpress now.
Looks solid. Nice work fellas.
The lack of contrast between the light gray background and the dark gray font makes the site slightly difficult to read. Perhaps you can lighten the gray background just a bit.
And I know this is just nitpicky, but I think the active/inactive style of the cavaliers/browns/indians tabs are backwards. The selected tab should appear to be in the foreground and the two unselected tabs should appear to be in the background.
Other than that, I like the redesign. Nice work guys.
Great job dudes. I am Mac user and wish you would have thought of us on the F5 issue. Mac is gaining some market shares dudes..No biggy though. Overall, this is a major upgrade.
Nice job guys.
Testing, testing. I signed up for WordPress, but I don’t see anything about avatars.
Wow, quite a change. Looks good though.
The new layout looks really nice!
Testing avatar..
Testing avatar.. (part 2)
Love the new site!
Looks great. Keep up the good work!!!
Excellent work WFNY!
Better looking, for sure. Why eliminate the numbering and time-stamping of comments? Can they come back?
Great job, guys. A few comments:
1. I agree with keeping the comment number.
2. The F5 thing works on my Mac.
3. Is there a sarcasm font?
4. Doing the avatar thing turned out to be easy.
Great job
Thanks for all of the feedback guys – this is a working model. All comments will be taken into account.
love the avatar idea… maybe people will stop assuming that “mendy” is a girl now (assuming i’m not lazy and actually sign up for wordpress)
but yeah, not having the comments numbered will get ugly.
overall it looks great guys! truly!
I think the new design looks good, but I agree with Swig that there needs to be some more contrast between the light gray background and darker gray text of the post, and that the red links in the footer are practically unreadable. Lighten up the background a couple shades, and for the footer links I’d recommend trying light gray text with an underline that goes to white on mouseover.
I’m somewhat new to waitingfornextyear.com only discovering the website about 6-8 months ago. The up to date news and rumors along with other posts has made this website a consistent hit among my own, and many of my classmates at Cleveland State daily internet use. As a huge Cleveland sports fan, I am desperate to hear any and all news/rumors surrounding the Browns, Cavaliers and Indians and this site definitely quenches that thirst. Love the updates, keep up the good work guys!
I tolerated the pick until they drafted another WR with the other 2nd Rd pick. I would have preffered drafting Massoquoi with the one pick and Malaluga or Lesean McCoy with the other. Something other than Robo.
is the “book it” button reserved for isis’s avatar?
actually, you should change the “Submit Comment” button to “Book It!” and, on the front page, instead of “Continue Reading,” it should say “Observe”
too much grey.
Gray text on a gray background? I mean, the new design is pretty, but the article text is actually harder to read. You guys should put black text on a white background. This is not easier on the eyes by any stretch. Other than that, I dig it! Comment layout is a LOT better.
UM…got my first pop up ad in like forever. NOT a good way to start a new lay out.
Love the new look. This site just keeps getting better! Great job!
Cool look – love the changing logo and the Browns/Indians/Cavs tabs. Like some of the previous commenters, I do miss the comments not being numbered and I really miss the links at the end of the comments that let me navigate between the previous post and the next post. I don’t usually get to read this until the evening, so I read an entire day’s worth in one evening. Scrolling back up to the top is a pain.
I promise you guys we will be addressing the post navigation links ASAP.
