Browns/Steelers Game Notes
October 19, 2009Jamario Moon Fills in for Ailing Cavs

Any post titled “First down? Eh, Close enough” deserves a link: “I know that officials aren’t going to get every call right, and that’s fine. The ones where you’re provided with a handy stick for measuring purposes, though … those, you should probably get right. You don’t have to decide anything on those. You just have to look.” [MJD/Shutdown Corner]

Yes We Can! “At this point we are all looking for progress. If the Browns give us more, like a win, that is just gravy. So let’s talk progress. Browns quarterback Derek Anderson progressed from last week. He also solidified my belief he should not be a starter in the NFL.” [No Logo Needed]

Not looking good for Grover: “Obviously, the Indians were disappointed that John Farrell took himself out of consideration. He definitely would have been a finalist. Farrell is making about $700,000 as Boston’s pitching coach, and he made a commitment to stay with the Red Sox through 2010. He decided to honor it, even though Boston gave him permission to talk to the Tribe. So there are at least six names on the list that I haven’t heard. I do know that names not on the list are former manager Mike Hargrove, Yankees bench coach Tony Pena, Buck Showalter, and Phil Garner. Hargrove could end up being a bench coach if the team hires a younger manager.” [Terry Pluto]

And finally, remember that this guy is a kicker: “Jeff Reed was given a citation for public intoxication and disorderly conduct around 9 p.m. last night outside of McFadden’s bar on the North Shore, according to Pittsburgh Police. […] Earlier this year, Mr. Reed, pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and criminal mischief after police said he damaged a paper towel dispenser and harassed employees at a Sheetz convenience store in New Alexandria in February. In that incident, witnesses told police that Mr. Reed, 30, went into the store bathroom and then became infuriated that there were no towels in the dispenser.” [Post Gazette]

Grr, grumble grumble… we wuz robbed!
Alright, got that out of the way.
Hargrove said in print he was contacted by the Indians, so for Pluto to suggest he’s not on the initial list (in the least) is just false reporting.
Josh McDaniel’s expertise is offense-upon taking the HC job in Denver he named Mike Nolan his Defensive Coordinator (a HIGHLY experienced and successful DC in the NFL). Mike Tomlin did same on both sides of the ball upon taking Pittsburgh’s job. I could go on and on and on……how many such examples can you think of? Eric Mangini’s expertise (supposedly, I’m a skeptic) is defense-he hired a ROOKIE offensive coordinator upon taking the Cleveland Browns HC position.
Just why was David Veikune picked in round 2 by the Browns when everyone else had him as a 4th round/5th round prospect? Veikune was picked as on OLB/edge rushing prospect, and has since been moved to ILB (a position normally assocatied with lower round picks). Yesterday with Kam Wimbley out at OLB and Dq Jackson out at ILB the respective roles were filled by Jason Trusnik and Maivia (a 5’11” 220 pound undersized LB). Just what is the deal with Veikune?
Isis where is this print you speak of because I read almost everything Indians related that isn’t written by Paul Hoynes and I haven’t seen a single mention of Hargrove being contacted. So unless you actually find a link to an article saying he was contacted, how about we stop name calling Pluto there.
Isis, the deal with Veikune is that he loves long bus trips, always pays his hotel incidentals, and runs laps well. What else do you want?
And Veikune was a 3rd round prospect (so in theory I agree with the argument) in the draft not 4th/5th, unless you also publish your own draft guide. If that is so, let me say, that I’d like to be first to sign up for your draft guide just so we can finally have something in print that is prospective rather than hindsight bashing.
I hope that ref gets fined something ridiculous, so crap like that doesn’t happen anymore. I can’t understand how the booth didn’t call down and tell them to maybe take another look at that. But because it happened against the Browns, no one cares. My bet is you won’t hear another thing about it.
Browns beat Bills.
Bills beat Jets.
=
Browns better than Jets. Stop complaining everyone.
“How’s my logic? Call (800) _ _ _ -_ _ _ _.”
A HINDSIGHT BASHER? ISIS? I THOUGHT HE JUST KNEW EVERYTHING?
But for real, our picks have not been impressive. Robo is still looking like a terrible selection (and I’m a buckeye). Maybe if we had a GM this wouldn’t have happened. Is Kokinis just a figment of our imagination or does the guy actually exist?
It’s difficult to say Robo is looking terrible when he just started to get PT.
(ignores all arguments about him not being able to make it on the field)
I’m usually not one to point fingers at officiating, but that call had me screaming at the tv…. a %#$%@ first down?? I was glad to see Rob Ryan share this sentiment with me.
@ #4: That might be why you missed it. Hoynes quotes Hargrove:

Actually, the first down call was 100% correct. This site just conveniently happened to show you a deceptive modified photo without proper perspective of the pole, the ball or the hashmark.
