An amazing write-up by a Browns fan that made ESPN. Check it out if only for this part: “Pittsburgh: America’s crotch. Literally one of the worst cities on the planet. Full of toothless mountain people. Looks from above as if someone decided, “You know what I’m going to do? Cut out a huge chunk of one of the worst sections of Eastern Europe and drop it in the middle of Pennsylvanian Appalachia.” At the end of the day, the Cleveland Browns suck, but at least we’re not from Pittsburgh.” [ESPN Page 2]

Guess who tops SLAMOnline’s Top 50: “He holds a very special place in both the current and historical hierarchy. He’s the most ready made prep to pro player ever, who somehow managed to exceed the hype in leading his hometown team from the doldrums of irrelevance. He’s an unprecedented package of size, skill and athleticism, as close to a one man team as we’ve ever seen.” [Myles Brown/SLAMOnline]

Stable? The Indians? “Acta not only is a finalist for the Indians, but also a leading candidate for the Astros. The Indians are not likely to alter their process because of the Astros’ interest. But Astros owner Drayton McLane might react to the Indians’ pursuit. […] Acta, who began his career with the Astros and spent 16 years in the organization, told reporters that rejoining the team would be “too good to be true.” The Indians, however, are a far more stable operation.” [Ken Rosenthal/FoxSports]

A feel-good story about Jamario Moon, including his days with the Harlem Globetrotters. [Brian Windhorst]

Someone’s got a long leash… “[Derek] Anderson’s stats are abysmal. His 41.7 passer rating is worst in the league, lower than that of the ever-struggling JaMarcus Russell of Oakland. Anderson’s average of 4.7 yards per attempt also ranks last in the league, and he’s thrown just two touchdowns compared to six interceptions. Coach Eric Mangini, though, shows no inclination to think about changing quarterbacks again. He blames Anderson’s stats on the entire offense, saying the group around Anderson needs to get better.” [The OBR]

Did anyone else see the reports about Bobby V being interviewed? Great idea. If the team is gonna stink anyway, we may as well be entertained.
Without clicking on the SLAM link, they’re referring to Tracy McGrady, right?
Forget it Rosey, Shapiro is not about to hire an independent mind like Bobby V.-much as it would be the refreshing choice to energize things. Start thinking Acta like (it’s not a skin condition) along with a minor league coaching staff, that’s more akin to Shapiro’s ego.
As for Mangini, he didn’t offer the same excuse line while BQ was playing-the insidious agenda is pathetic.
JK – Isn’t that the exact same story that I linked to? I mean, it was even above the jump…?
WCW – Bingo. Miles was No. 2.
@ Isis – check on this piece on Valentine’s interview yesterday: http://www.swerbsblurbs.com/article_detail.php?blgId=5242
Sounds like he came in and didn’t take it all that seriously. I’m not a shill for Acta (in fact, I don’t think he’d be the best hire), but Valentine didn’t seem to do a whole lot to suggest he was serious about being the Indians manager.
That ESPN piece is a riot! Much much better and funnier than the usual litanies of woe.
Hahaha My bad Scott.. I saw it when I got to work at around 7 and was waiting to post it and some how missed it. Maybe you could take my post down so I dont look as ignorant?
Anyone watch Leno last night? I caught only 30 seconds. In that 30 seconds, he and Jerry Jones made fun of the Browns.
JK – nope! Let this be a lesson! 🙂
Going forward, we usually link to anything worth while sent to our tips address in the sidebar. If you want something up, that’s the route to go.
I agree with #7. Valentine sounds like he could care less about managing this team based on his interview with the press.
As much as I respect what Bobby V. has accomplished in his career, if that’s how he acted in the interview with team officials as well I can’t say I’d be all that enthused about hiring him.
Re: Item #1– when I first read that piece last night, my initial reaction was that it did not go far enough in its screed against the city-shaped rectums known as Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Baltimore. He failed to mention Cincinnati’s race riots, ugly people and its de-facto status as Kentucky’s largest city; Pittsburgh’s ever-growing exodus (because even the natives can’t wait to get out) and mystifying traffic patterns; and Baltimore’s astronomical STD and crime rates (hello: The Wire!).
Past that, awesome.
I teared up after reading the ESPN piece. Simply beautiful.
Read the comments after the ESPN article. Geoff, the writer responds to all the yinzers in an extremely eloquent fashion at 12:34 am. Awesome.
what a peice by this geoff latulippe. all my thoughts and feelings as a browns fan put together in a one page article. priceless.
