Lee Dominates the Yanks – Can We Have a Do-Over?
October 29, 2009Hating the Game
October 29, 2009So, recall a few weeks back when we were all thrilled that Fox Sports Ohio was going to join the ranks of every other television station by broadcasting all of their live sporting events in high definition this year. Opening night’s game was on TNT – also in high definition – and aside from the score, could not have looked better. That LeBron-Rondo play was stellar in 1080i, no doubt.
Segue to last night when the Cavaliers played against the Raptors in Toronto. The picture was dreadful. Whatever the opposite of high definition is (low? inside out?), that’s what we were forced to watch.
So, what’s the deal?
Well, after speaking with one of the communication heads at FSN Ohio, it turns out that the issue was with the Air Canada Center. While I tried my hardest to get the official statement to be “Blame Canada,” the representative did go on record to say that the high definition equipment was in place and was merely a last second failure.
All tests were run, results were as expected. The Air Canada Center has been broadcasting high definition for quite some time. Even Raptors fans in Toronto were forced to watch the game via the same standard feed as all of us back here in Cleveland. At times it was almost slow motion; or that could have just been our front court. We’ll never know.
Going forward, Fox Sports expects this to be an aberration that just happened to be on their first night of broadcasting for the 2009-10 season.
Hopefully, the future also provides Cavs fans with a better product while their television affiliate provides a better feed to our collective television sets.

Finally a solid explanation for this. It was dreadful watching that game last night, and the picture quality wasn’t so great either.
It looked like a video communique in a futuristic war flick. “{static} getting hit {static} We {static} hold out {static} longer {static} reinforcements!” Or, like the Princess Lea hologram.
Funny that FSN said they would broadcast all sports in HD, except for the hockey games. They’ve had maybe one of the Jackets games in HD thus far. Hockey is by far the most dreadful to watch in SD, given the constant movement and change of direction.
Agree with #3…watching hockey in HD is a *totally* different experience.
I’m still in SD and the game looked like something that was streamed on a computer.
For some reason Fred McCloud’s voice sounded weird too…
I’d call “standard definition” the opposite of “high definition.”
“I’d call “standard definition” the opposite of “high definition.”
You’re being to generous. Last night’s feed was a step backwards from SD.
Aha….and here I thought it was my TV set or feed causing what appeard to be slow motion! Not exactly an auspicious debut for FoxOhio’s Cavs coverage-and, did Fred “Hollywood” McLeod dye his hair?
It felt like I was watching a streaming video over the internet. The quicker the movement, the more blurry it got.
I’m with you Boom, i thought the same thing when i turned the game on.
Does anyone know where they send the game when the Blue Jackets are on FSN in Columbus?
Last year the Cavs were always on FSN (AT&T Uverse) so I never had an issue. Last night at my gf’s (with Insight) I couldn’t find the game.
That is funny, I watching the game with my 8 year old son, and he says “Dad the game looks fake, or something.” It’s pretty bad when even my 8 year old notice how crappy it looked.
@Swig: I don’t know about Insight, but on Time Warner the games get bumped to the alternative FSOH. On standard cable that’s channel 24 for standard def and 1310 for HD.
@Swig: It’s channel 929 on Insight for HD. I think it’s labeled Special Events HD or something like that.
Thanks guys, I’ll check that out next time.
There’s nothing worse than firing up the plasma flat screen and sitting back, taking 5 minutes to find the HD channel on Time Warner only to find that the hi-def feed is out. Arrrrrrrggggggggggggh!
