Checking in with Jeff Garcia: “In matter of months, veteran quarterback Jeff Garcia went from pronouncing himself a contender for the Raiders’ starting job to an Oakland afterthought. Garcia fell victim to his age (39) by sustaining a series of nagging injuries that forced him to miss the bulk of training camp snaps, but he appeared ready to accept a backup role. Instead, his Raiders career ended before it really starting. Oakland released Garcia on Saturday, along with 21 other players to reach the 53-man NFL roster limit.” [Nancy Gay/NFL FanHouse]
Competition for Kurz: “It may not be the most vital topic at this point, but there is still a little uncertainty over the 15th spot on the Cavs’ roster. Young stretch forward Rob Kurz has a standing training camp offer, but he hasn’t signed it yet because the Cavs have declined to guarantee him significant money. According to a source, there is still one other team that is flirting with giving Kurz a guarantee, and he’s waiting before signing with the Cavs.” [Brian Windhorst/Plain Dealer]
The Browns release their depth chart for the first week of the NFL season in typical Eric Mangini fashion. [Dawgs by Nature]
“Mangini going against the quarterback who, despite the fact he’ll a first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer, got into one of his interception-throwing frenzies, helping take the Jets, who were 8-3 with five games left and seemingly a sure bet to make the playoffs, to a nose-diving 9-7 finish, keeping them out of the postseason and costing Mangini his first head-coaching job.
And it also caused Favre, who never seemed to tally embrace the Jets and the opportunity there, to retire – again – but only for a while until he was lured out of it by the Vikings, the whole long-drawn out process doing much to tarnish his image and causing people who a couple years ago never wanted him to leave, to start begging him to just please go away ASAP.” [Steve King/The OBR – S/R]
