Could Browns Go Winless This Year?
August 14, 2009Delonte West now on Delonte West
August 14, 2009As the Browns season approaches, I was interested in seeing what new apparel is available for wearing proudly this fall. The only Browns jersey I own or am currently able to locate is a home William Green jersey. I am pretty sure that is not a piece of attire germane to this upcoming season so I decided to take a gander at the jerseys page on the NFL online shop. I suppose you could always be one of those peculiar individuals who spends $100 and personalizes a jersey. I have seen a wide range of these down at Cleveland Browns Stadium ranging from creative to confusing to vulgar. I never really understand the rationale behind this but I guess it always stays relevant unlike my Billy Green jersey. As opposed to Rick’s in depth look at historic jersey numbers last week, I found some not so historic but infamous jerseys available. Needless to say, the official online NFL shop presented some items of note:
-Donte Stallworth’s (suspended for the entire season!) jersey has been discounted from $75 to $30. I doubt they are still manufacturing these so there is probably limited supply if you are interested. I am trying to think of a worse way to spend 30 bucks and I really cant.
-A Joe Jurevicius jersey has been discounted as well from $75 to $30. All proceeds will go to the Browns defense fund against Jurevicius lawsuits.
-Good News! Willie McGinest jerseys are still available and have not been discounted. They are currently going for $75. Who even bought one of these when he was actually on the team?
-Sticking with the Romeo LB corps and the first person on this list technically still in the league, Andra Davis jerseys are available and have been discounted from $75 to $35.
-There is obviously still a wide variety, from men’s to youth to women, of Kellen Winslow jerseys still available. This particular version is actually discounted to $120 although the original price was $240.
-Derek Anderson jerseys are being discounted from $75 to $60 while Brady Quinn jerseys remain at full $80 value. This will be Mangini’s final criteria for selecting the starter – who sells more jerseys. The demand for DA is obviously down while Quinn remains a strong seller. The Browns fanbase has bought Quinn jerseys en masse over the past two years and apparently Randy Lerner took notice last year when he “strongly petitioned” Romeo for the fan favorite Quinn to be subbed in mid-season. Is that how our owner chooses his starter – jersey sales and popularity? I personally would invest in a Ratliff jersey before I bought either a DA or Quinn jersey.
In total, it is a pretty sad jersey offering but that has pretty much been the standard since 1999. I do not have the time to list all the irrelevant and re-tread jerseys I have seen down on the lake in RECENT years. Quincy Morgan…Melvin Fowler…Travis Prentice…Aaron Shea…Scott Rehberg…(ok maybe that last one is a stretch). It goes on and on. What’s the worst you have seen?

Tickets have also been discounted, starting with the first exhibition game. Management sees a distressed revenue opportunity.
Thank goodness for StubHub and the person from Sharon, Pa. who will sit in my lower end zone season seats.
I still proudly wear my #29 Eric Turner jersey.
I haven’t found anybody worth replacing it with.
do they have Stallworth license plate frames?
I should be getting my #23 “LeBron” Browns jersey in the mail any day now…
Rob, same here. The guy could hit like a freight train. Speaking of bad jerseys… https://waitingfornextyear.com/?p=5852
I’m taking my Winslow #80 jersey, removing the name, so that I can claim it’s a Robiskie jersey.
I’m not a jersey guy, but I think the best bet to avoid getting stuck with a worthless jersey is to pick a great Browns player from ages past. Clay, Bernie, Jim Brown, etc: legends never go out of style.
Speaking of Browns gear, what’s the best place to pick up some good stuff? I’m looking for back-to-basics, old-school, classic-type stuff that won’t end up looking cheesey in a few years. And anything with the Brownie Elf is a bonus. I’m sick of the cookie-cutter garbage that the NFL team shop and the other mainstream stores have been putting out the last few years. Any alternatives out there?
I got #4 Phil Dawson jersey made about 6 years ago, ad have worn out most every game day since. Obviously, isn’t doesn’t really bring good luck, but i feel a lot better about it than my friends who have bought Green, Suggs, Frye, Winslow, Wimbley, Sean Jones, and Northcutt jerseys.
Scott Player Jersey. Best i’ve seen. The guy had the helmet too. It was awesome.
The occasional Rison jersey is always worth a chuckle.
There was an autographed Dennis Northcutt jersey for sale for like $60 at some little sports shop in Tower City when I saw an Indians/Tigers game a few weeks ago.
I bought an $80 Jeff Garcia jersey for $5 at some discount store in Middleburg Hts. after he left. It’s really a nice jersey. Unfortunately, his name is silk-screened on rather than sewn on, so I can’t get it off.
@6 Big TC . . http://www.nineteen47.com/ they have a cool store in boston – of course with no cleveland stuff, it’s also ‘wicked’ expensive but worth a look
the closest i’ve come to getting a browns jersey since they came back was Gerrard Warren. thankfully i didn’t get it. So i’ve been rockin my white #19 jersey to this day.
“Stuff that won’t end up looking cheesey in a few years… and anything with the Elf if is a bonus”
Thank you sir, for completely undermining your first point with your second.
@Denny:
Aside from being the best non-official mascot in the history of sports, the Elf is a part of the Browns heritage from the glory days of the franchise.
But I wouldn’t expect someone like you to understand that. After all, by your own admission you “didn’t grow up a huge Browns fan” think the best uniforms in professional football “look like a Reese’s cup.” Way to go bud, spoken like a true fan.
Isn’t there a soccer game on that you should be watching right now?
I’ve been trying to find a Clay Mathews jersey for like four years now. Anyone have any info on where I might be able to find one. He was my favorite player growing up and after my Couch jersey went kaput, I figured his would be the next I got. Any leads would be much appreciated.
@ The Mike:
Might need to pony up and buy one of those customized ones. I haven’t seen pre-made ones in many, many moons.
@ TC-
Just because it’s old doesn’t mean it doesn’t look silly.
Being the best unofficial mascot is like being the coolest kid who isn’t invited to the party.
At no point did I claim to be a “true fan” of the Browns. I’m a casual fan. I HEARD FROM WOIO ALL THE TRUE FANS WERE BUSY GETTING PICKED UP ON DUIS THIS WEEK.
Soccer game was two days ago, it’s golf time right now sir.
Why did you choose to feature NFLShop instead of our own Official Team Shop at the Stadium? The Browns have zero control over what sells, or for what price, at NFLShop.
TONS of Vintage Collection Brownie the Elf gear at the Stadium Team Shop and online at http://www.clevelandbrownsteamshop.com
And no Stallworth jerseys either…
FEAR THE ELF!
@LeBron 3eb: I’ve seen that guy, too! Great jersey and get-up.
I want to change my #17 Edwards jersey to a Varejao jersey. Anyone know a place that’ll do it? (Hopefully in Chicago…)
Denny I used to hate you, but you have totally redeemed yourself by punking out “Big Dawg” in your last comment… well done amigo.
@ Big TC – the internet is a fickle, fickle beast. At least we can enjoy this peaceful moment.
Also, there’s World Chamionship track and field I shall be watching this weekend as well. And yes, I’m excited to watch the entire marathon.
saw a Wali Rainer jersey at the scrimmage Sunday
@ Big TC
Thanks for the info!
RobGoBlue… You just made my day. Stick with that ET jersey… 😉
