“Several league sources said the vibe coming from the Cavs is that they are now in a wait-and-see mode in free agency after signing Anthony Parker to a two-year contract on Monday. The team still has around $3 million to spend from their mid-level exception. Sources said that despite having some contact with free agent forwards Linas Kleiza and Matt Barnes, the Cavs are not in talks with either at the moment. They are also keeping tabs on guard Joey Graham, but not are believed to be close to making an offer.” [Brian Windhorst/Plain Dealer]

How bad is the Tribe pitching? In games where they score 6-7 runs, their winning percentage is .417. The rest of the league: .757. [Jay/Let’s Go Tribe]

Think the Browns have a rough receiving corps? Well, with less than a month to go before training camp, Baltimore’s Derrick Mason (who absolutely lit us up last season) has announced his retirement. Their starting WRs are now Mark Clayton and Demetrius Williams. [AP via ESPN]

Well, it’s been fun… “[Rich] Rodriguez’s short tenure at Michigan has been a disaster. The players don’t seem to like his style. The alumni hasn’t warmed up to him. The administrators who hired him -and who could fire him -were unhappy they were going to have to be deposed in his legal dispute with West Virginia University. Although most coaches get at least three years to prove themselves, I’m convinced Rodriguez is only going to get two.” [News and Sentinel]

Dear UM,
Save the rivalry, dump Dick Rod.
Love

Cmon…….trying to put in a run and shoot at a major midwestern football power…….absurd. We’ll take the offensive line talent (Justin Boren…) that would have went Michigan’s way.

Be fair. Just ask Bob Stoops how he enjoyed being on the receiving end of the beat-down that the WVU team that RichRod built put on them in the Fiesta Bowl two seasons ago.
There’s no room for fairness here. Move along.
BE FAIR!
Take that Rodriguez piece for what it’s worth fellas. It’s from some no-name Parkersburg beat-writer (remember, the entire state of West Virginia wants to see Rodriguez’s career ruined) who probably knows less about what’s going on in Ann Arbor than you or me.
I’m not saying there isn’t some truth to what he’s saying about the trustees and alumni not warming up to the guy, but I think he’s probably painting a slightly darker picture than is actually warranted. Michigan brought in a top 10 national class this year full of guys that fit Rodriguez’s system, and I’m sure the University is going to consider that before axing a guy for whom they spent a small fortune. I’d say he has at least one more year to show progress before UM goes back to square one, unless of course, their maize and blue dreamboat, Les Miles, indicates a desire to migrate north.
But Rodriguez didn’t even get to bring in his own players. How can you implement a system with the other guys players? Use the Weis model. Give him a 10 yr extension and some faith, I’m sure the system will come around.
Dear WFNY,
I’ll bet any takers $500 that Rich Rodriguez isn’t fired before the start of the 2010 Michigan football season.

…and for the record, every single writer at this site has more skill in his pinky finger than that News and Sentinel guy. It’s almost as if he decided that sometimes one-sentence paragraphs are too overwhelming, so he just posted a sentence-fragment paragraph.
Dear Brian,
While I agree with your position that Rodriguez is not going to be fired any time soon, I feel compelled to inform you that your football program is a joke. Moreover, beyond simply being bad in an on-field performance sense, the team is now also run by a man who, by all accounts, is filthy and despicable. (See Exhibit A, His Program in Morgantown.) The one thing that Michigan always had going for it was a little touch of class . . . we may have disputed it at the time, but in the days of Bo, and even to some degree under Carr, while we may still have hated Michigan Football, we respected the University as a classy rival. The day UM hired Rodriguez and decided to go slumming it, that all went out the window. In the words of the great Pete Bell of Blue Chips fame, “You took the purest thing in your life and corrupted it.”
Still surprised Mason retired. Unlike Favre. Mason wanted to go out with a bang and retire on top.
My wife and her friends were at that show, but she didn’t say anything about what Donnie said. They were probably too busy screaming like 12-year old girls to hear it.
I was going to make a crack about the Ravens bringing some of their old receivers back to play for them and I honestly can’t think of any.
Maybe the Ravens would be interested in a trade for potential breakout receiver Syndric Steptoe.
I have a feeling the Cavs may wait on signing the Barnes/Kleiza types until the market dries up and they’re more willing to take “on the cheap” deals.
I’m willing to give Rodriguez a total of three years to show he’s got something brewing. To install his offensive system they need to pretty much completely weed out the program of the types of players Coach Carr had (and thanks, I’ll accept your Justin Boren!)
I had/have a TON of respect for Coach Carr as a football coach and as a mentor to his players. He was absolutely a class act.
The UM program brought this on themselves by hiring a guy away from his alma mater who had a $4 million buyout. I’d like to see them get better, and am willing to wait to see if they can get things going – but to me it seems like when all is said and done, Charlie Weis is going to be embarrassed for Rich Rod.
re: the Cavs – they definitely need another piece. I thought the Magic took a real step backwards when they traded for VC and gave up on resigning Hedo, but since that time they’ve gone and signed Bass and re-signed Gortat. On paper, they’re just as, if not more formidable than last year. They’re also WAY over the luxury tax threshold, so if they don’t start off quick, they’re going to have to make trades otherwise they’ll hemorrhage money.
DP….I said Midwestern POWER. Nothing against WVU, it’s a fine program…….but they must have a gimmicky style (run and shoot) to compete against the perenial powers. They can’t and don’t recruit on the same level as UM and OSU. Nice program………very competitive…..but not in my opinion a midwestern POWER.
Denny……well put.
Orlando traded away their SG and lost thier multi-dimensional SF….got a SG and signed an extra PF.
With Howard, Gortat and Bass all wanting/needing minutes (gortat isn’t making $7mil/year for 15 minutes a night)….doesn’t that make Orlando a more traditional team with Rashard moving to SF most of the time? Doesn’t that take away their biggest advantage against the Cavs (having an offense that played on the weaknesses of our rotate and help defense)?
I, for one, am very happy with Orlando’s offseason moves. Instead of us having to figure out ways to match up with them better, they are doing it for us.
(note: of course, they are doing it to match up better with LA, SA and Boston…so I see why they did it. but, it still helps us)
orl seems to realize what everyone else did…you cant win a championship based on streaky long range shots…have to win from the inside out…although I think signing VC was a HUGE mistake…but it benefits us in the long run…I think itll be bos and orl beating the crap out of each other again in the playoffs next year, ‘cept this year we are more athletic and a bit taller…I like the cavs moves in the offseason, but would like to see them sign Barnes…
i swear i am the ender of all threads.
While Orlando matched the Gorat contract; he apparently is NOT happy. He wanted a shot at starting and now he basically has no chance for the next FIVE years. So resigning him could back fire in the locker room.
What’s up with this?

• I’ve been advised by one especially knowledgeable observer not to be surprised if Delonte West is traded at some point this season, not because Cleveland is eager to part with him but because West is surely more movable from that massive Cavs payroll than Daniel Gibson.

I would argue–as a UM fan–that they are far from a midwestern power right now. I would also argue that if think guys like Pat White and Steve Slaton and Noel Devine weren’t worthy of going to OSU because WVU didn’t/doesn’t “recruit on the same level” as OSU, or if you aren’t willing to see/admit that Terrelle Pryor had WVU on his short list before Rodriguez left–and only later had Michigan on his short list because that’s where Rodriguez went… well, then you really, really need to remove your homer glasses.
