July 10, 2009NBA Players Association Upset (Delusional)
July 10, 2009Yahoo!s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Channing Frye will sign with the Phoenix Suns for two years and $3.8 million.
The second season is reportedly Frye’s option.
Assuming that yesterday’s reports on Anthony Parker’s contract are correct, the Cavaliers definitely had this money available. Whether or not they offered it is the unknown at this point.
(Update: Orlando signs the 23-year old Brandon Bass for four years, $18 million. Cavs reportedly made a push, but – once again – couldn’t match the money. Rumors have the Magic pushing for Matt Barnes as well.)

You’re trusting Wojnarowski? come on…
Frye will get significant burn for the Suns. Not so much with this Cavs team. At this point in his career, he needs to prove what he can do. I think it makes more sense for his career long term to sign where he can play.
Yahoo! has actually been breaking a lot of news lately… PHX was the front-runner for a while. No reason to not trust him at this point.
I didn’t want to see Frye take minutes away from D-Block and JJ. I’d bring back Joe Smith as insurance in case JJ’s back doesn’t heal.
Linus Kleiza………he can contribute right now.
Why is this a surprise? It’s been stated that Phoenix was most likely to sign him since last week.
Cross Bass off the list too.
Jason Kidd said he believes Grant Hill will sign with the Knicks this July but doubts LeBron James is coming to New York next July. In an interview on the Dan Patrick Show yesterday, Kidd claimed James’ status wasn’t a factor in his decision to spurn the Knicks for Dallas, but still doesn’t feel James will leave Cleveland. Kidd was James’ teammate on the gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic Team last summer.
New York Post
By the Magic. Wonderful.
This is smart for Frye, he can get solid PT for a team that will boost his stats (Nash is still able to get his guys open looks, which Frye can knock down), then he can opt out of his deal after one year if he does well and then really cash in
I hope the Cavs still look to get a big man who can shoot, not a guy who will play major minutes but just an option to have on the bench. Even Joe Smith wouldn’t be an awful guy to bring back. Kleiza would be nice but he isn’t a 4 really, and his defense is pretty awful. But if the price were right I wouldn’t mind
I’ve never been a fan of Channing Frye’s game. It only worries me because its ANOTHER free agent that signed with somebody else.
He had ties to Arizona from college and Phoenix had long been the front-runner. I’m more upset about Bass going to Orlando and I find it interesting that they were willing to pay him while already above the tax. I don’t think we were ever in the running for Bass, but I hate that Orlando got him.
I think we have to resign Joe Smith at this point.
Bass signed for four years, $18 million. Essentially half of Andy’s deal.
Not fun being so strapped…
Wow… I wasn’t all that high on Frye but Bass I thought would fit really well for this team. Seems like we could have waited on Parker and offered the bi annual or barnes the bi annual. We still need a PF imo. Ike Diogu maybe?
I still don’t get how we managed to grossly outbid ourselves for Andy. Who was bidding on him for that high? Who?!?!
Regardless what we all might think of the size of the contract, Andy’s contract had nothing to do with losing out on Frye or Bass.
Bass signed a deal for around 4.5 million a year for four years. Assuming Ferry would have been willing to do a four year contract (doubtful), then we would have needed almost all of our MLE to get this deal done. Too much of the MLE was tied up already with Parker to do it. You can debate whether the Parker signing was better than Bass, but the Andy signing had nothing to do with losing out on Bass.
As for Frye, he must have really wanted to go back to Phoenix because I’m sure we offered him what was left of our MLE (around 2.8 mil) for at least two years and he took 1.9 million for two years instead. The difference was probably the impact he’d have. In Cleveland he would have been a role player, whereas in Phoenix he’ll have a chance to potentially start.
Here is what ESPN said about Andy SHOULD receive (be sure to note that this was written before a deal was reached)
5. Anderson Varejao, Cavs (UFA)
Teams Interested: Cavs, Grizzlies
Salary Range: $8-9 million per year
The Cavs brought in Shaq to help in the middle, but they’ll need Varejao’s energy and toughness at the 4 if they expect to compete for a title next season. That should put Varejao in a better position to negotiate than he was in two years ago. That’s why he opted out.
When I saw Brandon Bass play live, he was a beast. Go get Kleiz.. whatever.
I agree with AMC on Bass and Frye.
I think, now, we need to make sure we get Matt Barnes before Orlando does. (Hopefully for the Bi-annual and not the rest of our MLE)
If we can do that we would have the remainder of our MLE to go after one of these PF’s:
Leon Powe
Drew Gooden
Chris Wilcox
Glen Davis
Hakim Warrick
Ike Diogu
Looks like Ben Wallace is going to get bought out and Sasha getting waived. Sign Wallace. lol
#19 what about Mikki Moore!?!? HAHAHAHAH
@ Wil – Supposedly the Cavs are in the mix for Big Baby – I think the guy’s a punk, but I think his game would work for us. Powe can be a beast, but he’s out with a knee injury until mid-season which raises his risk. In theory we could keep our bi-annual in reserve if we were interested.
With Parker on board, I don’t see Ferry going after Barnes. I haven’t read anything linking the Cavs with him at all (not saying we shouldn’t go after him, but I highly doubt it).
As I said earlier, if we can’t get Davis (and I’d be willing to spend the remainder of the MLE to get him), I think we should just resign Joe Smith as a band-aid for this season.
Please no more Joe Smith
I’m sorry but I’m looking at the big picture. So you saying that Andy will stop the big ticket from doing his usual double double with his D? Andy offensively can’t do squat for the team. Frye was an great mid range shooter and can hit the 3’s at 6’11. He could have make the other teams pay for double teaming lebron or shaq. I’m sorry but unless we trade Z for a solid midrange shooter I don’t see the ceveland passing the celtics. When LBJ leaves and your beloved Andy stays you guys can cheer for him and his solid D and running around like a wild man on offensive while every team ignores him and you guys think he’s being productive on offense .
# 17 Wil Says:
The Cavs brought in Shaq to help in the middle, but they’ll need Varejao’s energy and toughness at the 4 if they expect to compete for a title next season. That should put Varejao in a better position to negotiate than he was in two years ago. That’s why he opted out.
#24, That was not what was Wil was saying about Varejao, it is what was posted on ESPN, I think by Chad Ford.
As someone else said above, Frye not signing for the Cavs has nothing to do with Andy’s signing. It is different salary cap rules. I have read some of your other posts in other stories and you seem to not grasp the rules of the salary cap at all. Since Andy was our own free agent, we can go above the cap to resign him. Frye was not our FA, so we have only limited funds to go and sign him with. We did actually have more to offer money wise than the Suns did, but he wouldn’t have started or at least played as many minutes. So for Frye, it makes more sense to sign a one year deal where he can play more and show off his skills. He has a player option for the next year, and if he plays well this year, he just opts out and gets more money from the teams who don’t sign Lebron, Wade, Bosh, et al.
So before sitting on Mount Pious and telling us about looking at your big picture, go read up on the NBA salary cap. Then comment about money.
Thanks
Shaqfan,
If you are going to continue to misspell CLEVELAND, could you at least not refer to the Cavs as “we”.
So, Millsap signed an offer sheet with the Blazers. The 3-way trade that was purposed a couple days ago with CHI-UTAH-POR has to be dead too since the Blazers wouldn’t complete that knowing Utah would match the offer immediately after the trade to get boozer off the pay roll.
This is where I think Ferry might be able to get something done. Utah has less then 1 week to get rid of Boozer if they want Milsap. Maybe they get desperate enough to basically give Boozer away in a sign and trade (and buyout).
