June 4, 2009Stallworth faces up to 15 years if convicted. Police say Stallworth was driving drunk after a night on the town when he struck and killed 59-year-old Mario Reyes on a Miami Beach causeway. Stallworth is free on $200,000 bail and is required to abstain from alcohol, not drive and observe a curfew.
Nobody can tell us exactly what happened that morning in Miami. Donte won’t deny that he struck the man. He claims to have warned him by honking his horn and flashing his lights. I’ve read stories since the accident about that particular area, and how dangerous it is. But the bottom line here is that Donte used very bad judgment, something we are getting used to from our athletes in Orange and Brown.
Don’t get me wrong, we have a long way to go before we are the Bengals, but it is frustrating to watch such talented individuals make ridiculous decisions. But the decisions don’t just stop with the players. You have to wonder why Stallworth was brought here in the first place. In his first six seasons, Stallworth had managed to disappoint 3 different teams. In fact, you could argue that his best season was his rookie year with the Saints. That didn’t stop the Browns from shelling out the bucks for a guy who has never caught more than 70 passes or gone over 1000 yards.
If the Browns are going to contend anytime in the near future, it will be because they have brought in players that make better decisions, on and off the field. Hopefully the team is moving in the right direction with players like David Bowens.

As far as I’m concerned, that’s the definition of vehicular manslaughter. He knew the pedestrian was there, and instead of giving that ped the right of way (which is law), he decided to run him over. No matter whom it was that hit this person, they deserve ever minute of the 15 years.

It is too bad he’d be our #2 receiver if he didn’t do it, but I’m sure we easily have someone that’ll do better than he’s done for the Browns.
I never understood how he had time to honk the horn and flash the lights….but not hit the brakes. Its a shame this had to happen and a above avg football player is certainly not above the law.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard that lame “I flashed my lights and honked the horn” excuse before.
Flashing your lights and honking the horn can both be done while applying the brakes.
Its not a good excuse at all. In fact it makes him look worse and definitely under the influence enough where he shouldn’t have been driving. If he had the time to do those two things he could have easily stopped or slowed down.
That’s terrible. I thought it was an accident but if he honked the horn and flashed lights, he shouldm’t have hit him.
