Semifinal Game 7’s Galore
May 17, 2009Indians Week in Review
May 17, 2009If you’re one for following box scores on your computer or phone, you may notice something in today’s Indians/Rays game.
Tampa Bay starting pitcher Andy Sonnanstine is batting third.
Per the Associated Press:
An error on the Tampa Bay Rays’ official lineup card forced starting pitcher Andy Sonnanstine to bat in Sunday’s game against Cleveland. […]
The Rays lost their DH position due to the error, meaning Sonnanstine replaced Longoria in the third spot of the lineup. Longoria was available to come off the bench.
The Rays had listed two third basemen, effectively losing their DH. Longoria came in off of the bench to replace Ben Zobrist, but Sonnanstine has been forced to hit in the three hole.
Thus far, he has grounded into a fielders choice and hit an RBI double. Having 10 regular season at bats heading in to today’s game, the Indians have given Sonnanstine his first career extra base hit.
Definitely something to hang our hats on…

how does that even happen
It would happen if a team ever brings their DH out of the field. It is a very established rule, but teams usually are not stupid enough to let it happen.
Sounds like something that wouldn’t surprise me if it happened to us…
Better question: why was Garko in the outfield?
ugh.
It happened to the Indians in 2000, when Manny Ramirez–recovering from his dreaded hamstring injury–ran out to play RF……. when he was juicin—errr, DHing.
Manny being Manny. Charles Nagy had to hit. Good times were had by all.
Good find on that one DP. I am not surprised it happened to us within the decade…
