Perez Goes “Betancourt,” Indians Drop to 1-7

April 15, 2009This morning Terry Pluto put all the nails in the coffin of the Pistons even before the playoffs begin. He wrote an article stating that the Pistons could win a game or two, but that they have “None.Zip.Nada.” chance of actually beating the Cavaliers. He even goes on to say in the article that he is sure fans are “revving” up their emails about how Pluto has just jinxed the Cavaliers and inspired Detroit. So, did Terry just jinx the Cavaliers?
Simply put, no. He hasn’t “jinxed” the Cavaliers. You know why? Jinxes aren’t real and Terry Pluto doesn’t have special powers.
The Cavaliers are truly this good. If they fail to show up and play against Detroit they could lose the series. If someone gets hurt and is unable to perform, the Cavaliers could lose the series. But, if the Cavaliers show up at their capability level, they will beat Detroit at their maximum. It is as much a statement praising Chauncey Billups and the Pistons of old as it is a statement about the Cavaliers.
So save those paranoid emails about curses and jinxes to Terry. Even if the Cavs fail, it won’t be because Terry Pluto wrote an article or that you, as a fan, were too confident. Just because we are a sports town that has been defined by bad moments over the years is not a reason to start believing in witch doctors, voodoo dolls, curses, hexes, jinxes, or any other kind of supposed supernatural negativity. In fact, even if the Cavs fall into a plague of bad play, you can be assured that it wasn’t due to kryptonite either.
Don’t believe in jinxes. Those are wastes of energy and emotion. Spend your time believing and rooting for the greatest Cavaliers player and overall team in franchise history.

If Terry Pluto did have special powers, what would he do with them? I don’t he would waste it on jinxing the cavs. I hope he’d use them to magically make the Browns a playoff contender.
Didn’t he write the book “the Curse of Rocky Colavito”? Come on Terry you should know better…
Thank you, Craig, for the very level-headed post. Too often are Cleveland fans spending energy with “doom and gloom” scenarios or “hoping” that nothing goes wrong.
I’m sick of it. The Cavs are the BEST TEAM IN THE NBA. Yes, it is OK to say that. You’re right, Craig, Pluto’s article it is not going to jinx this team. Nothing, we as fans do, will jinx this team.
Sure, there have been some unfortunate incidents with Cleveland teams in the past, there also has not been as many REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY good Cleveland teams like this Cavaliers squad
If there’s no such thing as witch doctors, then where do witches go when they’re sick?
Did Don_NoLogoNeeded.com just jinx the Cavs? Article to follow this afternoon…
If the Cavs DO the unthinkable this year, will this site have to be renamed?
Matt, you will have to tune in to find out. What a great problem to have.
aaaand bills simmons is not only on the lebron for MVP campaign, but he has officially changed sides and joined the lebron stays campaign.
“Jinxes aren’t real and Terry Pluto doesn’t have special powers.”
Best line i’ve read anywhere in months…
He’s got the power…to move you *guitar solo*

It may be a premature discussion, but I think WFNY should stay as it is if the Cavs win it all. There is plenty still for cleveland sports fans to wait for; plus, I think, waiting for next year is as much a state of mind as it is something that is actually happening.
@CJG Yep, I totally agree, you took the words right out of my head on WFNY, and ditto on the next sport, hopefully the TRIBE.
@ buu – Simmons also in his column already gave the Cavs a 40-1 record at home.
If Pluto jinxed the Cavs, then this dude totally just jinxed the Lakers…

What a terrible article. The Lakers also played the 6 of the 7 WORST teams in the league more often. I’ve seen this stat brought up so many times it’s ridiculous. Way to do no research Del Grande, not that I ever read your articles but now I’ll know to avoid them in the future.
The Lakers went 21-9 against the Eastern Conference. With one more game left, the Cavaliers are currently 40-11 against the Eastern Conference.
The Lakers went 44-8 against the Western Conference. The Cavaliers went 26-4 against the Western Conference.
Not only did the Cavaliers beat up the West better then the Lakers, but the Lakers actually struggled in the East.
That is one of the more uninformed and ill-conceived articles I have read in quite some time. It got me fairly angry reading it….
