The Stee*ers Are the Model for Organizational Depth
April 30, 2009While We’re Waiting… Florescent Hat Guy, The Mo Williams Trade, and Rondo’s Elbow
May 1, 2009Today the 2009 College Football Hall of Fame Class was announced. Included were 16 players and 2 coaches. Notable inductees include Heisman Trophy winners Tim Brown (Notre Dame) and Gino Torretta (Miami). Of huge importance, however, is the induction of one Charles Christopher Spielman.
Spielman grew up in Massillon Canton and played for Massillon Washington High School. He was the man that famously held down the defense for the Buckeyes from 1984-1987. His 11-year NFL career saw him play his final season with the Browns in 1999, during which he was forced to retire due to neck injuries from his career. Since then, he’s famously egged on Rob Stone to eat a ridiculously hot pepper during his broadcasting career with ESPN. He’s also been very active with his wife’s breast cancer fund. Cheers and congrats to Spielman on his award.
(Thanks to E-Lock for the clarification regarding Spielman’s history – edited to reflect these errors)

“but Michigan’s Desmond Howard didn’t get in on his first try.”
I know this won’t make me popular here, but come on. Seriously? Gino Torretta gets in and Howard doesn’t?? I guess the trophy they gave him that one year was different than the one Torretta got. At least DHow went on to actually PLAY in the NFL.
Yea I was really surprised by that too. You would think anybody with a Heisman would get in automatically, and it’s not like Desmond didn’t do anything else after his career at UM.
Ahh…another career ended by the Browns…he’s lucky he didn’t have to start a staph infeciton fund.
Chris Spielman grew up in Canton, not Massillon. He lived in Canton through Jr. High, then went to Massillon because his dad was given a teaching/coaching position as a way of recruiting Chris.
Alas, Spielman was unable to bring a legitimate (won on the field) state championship to Tigertown. All these years — and many more recruited players — later, the sad little burg is still without a playoff state title.
Also, Spielman played at OSU from 1984-87, not 85-88, as reported.
Sorry about that ELOCK – fixed. Thanks for the heads up.
