Jackets Playoff Push Update – 4/6
April 6, 2009Series Preview: Indians at Texas Rangers
April 6, 2009Uber-utility man Jamey Carroll, will start the season on the disabled list with broken bone in his left hand.
The shame of it all is that the injury occurred during the ninth inning of the last Spring Training game in Houston. Astros Pitcher Doug Brocail hit Carroll on the left hand Saturday. This is the first trip to the DL in the 34 year old’s career.
Tony Graffanino will take his spot on the 25 man roster. The veteran, who has played in Atlanta, Chicago, Kansas City, Boston, and Milwaukee, batted .271 (13-48) with 8 runs scored, 2 doubles, a homer and 5 RBI in 23 spring games. He is 37 and can play second, third, first, and the corner outfield spots.

I get it. “Breaking Tribe News”
Wocka wocka.
Seriously though, as I said in email this morning, this will send reverberations through the Indians’ history books forever. Andy Marte is going to use this opportunity eventually. He is going to make the biggest career turnaround in the history of the majors. Marte is going to become the phenom that he was once projected to be. It all starts with the domino effect of Jamey Carroll getting hurt and Tony Graffanino getting called up. Mark my words. This is my prediction.
🙂
Jamey Carroll seems like such a nice guy, and he plays reliably. I feel worse for him breaking his hand than I would for many others on the team (not that I’d feel good about it for anyone).
Obviously TD would do backflips if The Looch broke his wrist.
Since it’s retroactive to before the season, does this count as the first player called up, or do we all strike out on that guess?
it doesn’t count 🙂
Don’t anyone dare spot a silver lining in this report of an injured Indian lest such a comment blow up into a heated 100-comment thread! 🙂
Best wishes, Jamey! Best wishes, Tony! Go Tribe!

@Craig: dude, I was thinking the same thing. Matter of fact, someone should review the entire game tape and all security video to see whether Brocail spoke or gestured to anyone during the game, where Andy Marte was, etc. Inquiries will be made.
