Adam Miller adjusts his delivery in an attempt to avoid career threatening surgery: “After being examined by two hand surgeons, a plan of action was proposed. Miller would try to adapt his delivery to the altered condition of his finger. If that failed, surgery would be the only other option, even though there was no guarantee it would work. So far, the first alternative is giving Miller hope… After every throwing session, Miller has been examined by a doctor and quizzed on what he felt while he was delivering pitches. So far, he has thrown only fastballs and changeups (He is permitted to throw with maximum effort).” [Sheldon Ocker/Akron Beacon Journal]

The reigning Cy Young winner gets roughed up in another Cactus League start: “Lee struck out six and didn’t walk a batter, but he gave up seven runs in the first two innings. The Indians defense didn’t offer much help in the first inning as second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera and left fielder Josh Barfield made errors…Lee is 0-3 with a 12.42 ERA in five starts this spring. He’s allowed 26 runs, 23 earned, on 37 hits in 16 2/3 innings. He has 14 strikeouts and two walks.” [Paul Hoynes/Plain Dealer]

Browns still trying to figure out how to convert at the top of the draft: “Hopefully with this new regime we can get it right which worries me about drafting in the top five and tying a lot of money in one guy again. If the opportunity arises the Browns should no question trade down and pick up extra draft picks in the first day.” [Randy Ward/Browns Gab]

LeBron uses last night’s physical play to begin some playoff lobbying: “It was a hard hit but LeBron has taken much worse. To me, this is LeBron thinking ahead. He knows that in the playoffs there will be attempts to foul him hard as the Wizards did last season and he’s trying to make a point that if it knocks him down it isn’t equal to a guy like Delonte getting knocked down.” [Brian Windhorst/Plain Dealer]

An argument for why we may have to cope with another summer (but hopefully just spring) of Dellucci: “What Dellucci also has in his favor is the fact that the Indians have only four outfielders on their 40-man roster who have any major league experience. Crowe is on that 40-man roster too, but with no other outfielders behind him on the depth chart who even have one at-bat at Triple-A, you can see why the Indians would be hesitant to hand Crowe the job and lose the veteran Dellucci. It allows them to let things unfold. See how Ben Francisco does, see if Choo can stay healthy and hitting like he did to end last season. If either of them fails to live up to expectations, then things change. But as of right now, the best play for the Indians is to hold on and let there be a variety of guy’s fill-in in the outfield until the season plays itself into a situation where a move is necessary. Good stuff here. LeBron has all the physical tools he needs for the playoffs, so the foul last night with Collins doesn’t bother me in the least. Who knows if Miller is ever going to play for the Tribe, but at this moment we have a pretty rock solid bullpen and eight potential Major League starters.
Any chance we can extend Lee based on his Spring numbers? We may find ourselves a decent deal…
/obviously kidding
I honestly came into this Spring Training thinking that Miller would be on board but I will never make that mistake again. He is approaching “Lost Cause” status – some probably said that last year.
I’d rather have someone with no experience playing than Delucci. The above is hardly an explanation of why we would keep him
To me, the other real reason to keep Delucci over Crowe, is to give Crowe everyday playing status down in Columbus. If Delucci sees any time in the OF, god help us all.
Indians have reported officially that Barfield has won the 25th spot on the roster. Crowe and Gimenez have been optioned down.
Yes, as nick said that he best performers can only have survived, by definition. Had they looked at the worst performers, then the results would have most probably included survivorship bias
