Browns QB Controversy: Could Derek Anderson Still Be Our Guy?
February 25, 2009While We’re Waiting… More on Shaun Rogers, Celtics Lose to Clippers, and a Delonte West Injury Update
February 26, 2009Ok, it may be just the first spring training game, but what a welcome sight! The Indians open Goodyear Park with a game against the Giants. It is going to be strange playing these Cactus League teams. We’ve gotten so used to playing against the teams in Florida. Don’t figure we’ll see Barry Bonds today, and that’s probably best anyway.
Jeremy Sowers gets the nod for the Indians. He is one of several young pitchers trying to get into the rotation, but as Paul Cousineau writes, it may not really matter who wins that 5th spot.
That is, as fun as it figures to be to watch these youngsters (Laffey, Huff, Sowers, Jackson, Lewis) battle it out for the 5th spot out of Spring Training in Goodyear, all it really means is that the “winner” is just getting the first crack to stay in what could be a rapidly revolving door (or doors) in the rotation. Obviously, that “first crack” shouldn’t be discounted as, if the pitcher remains healthy and effective, it’s much easier to stay in the rotation than it is to be promoted to said rotation. But, the way that questions abound around the Indians’ rotation, whether it pertain to health or effectiveness, I don’t think that there’s much doubt that the Indians will be moving pieces and parts in and out of the rotation throughout the season to optimize the performance in the rotation.
I know I’m just happy to hear the crack of the bat and Tom Hamilton’s familiar “Hi again everybody!”
Let’s go Tribe!

Tribe’s official top prospect in Carlos Santana is DHing today. I hope he can get some cracks at a pitcher not named “Lincecum,” as the reigning Cy Young winner isn’t exactly a fun first crack at the bigs.
Anyone have any suggestions on where to listen to this game online for free?
Is this game on right now?
First pitch was 10 minutes ago – try WTAM’s online feed.
Nevermind, i got it. 1100 AM if you’re in range.
@ Scott,
MLB makes you pay to hear the radio feed online.
What a beautiful stadium… glad I had to be in at work at 6… kinda…
Yes, MLB charges $14 for the entire season of radio broadcasts. If you are out of range, this is the BEST BARGAIN IN SPORTS!
i’m watching on MLBTV (while at work). Did anyone else see Carlos Santana’s swing? He looks like a beast.
Andy Marte cleared waivers. The one-time super prospect looks like he’ll be a career AAA player.
Thank goodness for slingbox.
“Did anyone else see Carlos Santana’s swing? He looks like a beast.”
Not able to watch. Will be making plenty of trips to Akron to catch him this spring/summer, however.
anyone in AZ?
If so…make sure to hit these venues before you leave:
Tempe Diablo Stadium (Anaheim Angels)
Phoenix Park (Oakland A’s)
Chicago Cubs in Mesa (not sure of stadium name)
Those are the nicest venues. Though if you are staying in west PHX to be near Goodyear then Glendale (Brewers/Royals home) is closer. It’s just a newer place that doesn’t have the same views or aura of those older parks.
OMG THIS POST MAKES ME SO MAD ABOUT THE BROWNS MANAGEMENT!!!!
But seriously, I’m so pumped about the Tribe starting up.
Barfield seems to making some good contact today, good sign I hope.
“The crack of the bat.. the roar of the crowd”…. anybody know where I find that vintage Indians song online?
