Report: Indians Sign Carl Pavano
January 6, 2009What’s Wrong With The Cavaliers?
January 7, 2009While We’re Waiting aims to be the round-up of the recent WFNY-esque information for your morning viewing. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email in the sidebar.
Jon Steiner on the Carl Pavano signing: “I suppose I’m not completely against a move like this, but please only for one year and seriously limited money. Best case scenario: Pavano posts great numbers with a small market team and then signs a long term deal with the Yankees riddled with injuries and mutual disdain.” [Bugs and Cranks]
Speaking of Pavano, CastroTurf has the details on said incentives: “Pavano gets $100,000 each for reaching 18, 20 and 22 starts, $200,000 each for reaching 24, 26 and 28 starts, $250,000 for 30 starts, $300,000 for 32 starts, $350,000 each for 33 and 34 starts and $400,000 for 35 starts. He gets $100,000 each for reaching 130, 140 and 150 innings pitched, $150,000 each for 160 and 170 innings, $200,000 for 180, $250,000 for 190, $250,000 for 200, $300,000 for 215, $400,000 for 225 and $500,000 for 235.” [Castro Turf]
Good news: The Lakers and Celtics lost again. Bad news: Boston lost to the team we face tonight. [Boston.com]
This was about basketball, but given our football team I think it’s transferable: “Here’s the thing: If you’re a fan, and you paid a bunch of money for those seats, I guess you can do whatever you want. (I’d love it if you didn’t curse up a storm, as I’d like to bring my kids once in a while, but whatever.) But if your long-term goal is to watch a winning team, I’m pretty sure booing does not get you there. Yelling at people, at best, might in some cases get you more effort. But was it effort that made Dooling miss that free throw? I suspect that in the long run supportive fans have a more positive effect on performance. Confidence is a huge part of performing well. And crappy, unappreciative fans … that’s just one more reason not to play hard, in the long run. It could also be a reason for a free agent not to sign in that town.” [TrueHoop]
“Poor Romeo. All indications were that he was a very capable defensive coordinator with the Patriots before getting his gig with the Browns. That said, being a good coordinator for the Patriots doesn’t mean you’ll be a good head coach. Ask Notre Dame how that’s working out for them. Scratch that, ask Notre Dame’s opponents how it’s working out for them.” [Rumors and Rants]

Jeez Scott, you couldn’t even photoshop a Wahoo on that hat?
/not mad, just disappointed
I prefer to remind Yankee fans that they helped pay for that car he’s driving 🙂

Also, I think the Celtics taking the Bobcats into OT on the front end of a home / away back to back is good news, no?
Yea – I just don’t want to be catching the ‘Cats while they’re on a hot streak and we obviously are not.
Romeo was a pretty mediocre defensive coordinator in Cleveland before he was a good “defensive coordinator” in New England.
Didn’t the Indians try really hard to sign Pavano the year he did that deal with the Yankees? Thank goodness we missed that one….
I understand the not booing concept, but this is all a part of the disparity between the fans and the millionaires whom they are becoming increasingly jealous. I admit that I am a bad guy too. I am more likely to boo Braylon than Syndric Steptoe, though. Steptoe is a good guy put in a tough spot doing the best he can. Braylon is a bad guy who makes lots of money and is supposed to do something well enough to justify what he makes. Maybe my booing doesn’t help him turn it around, but my booing didn’t start until maybe the 5th drop or whatever.
That’s not Pavano. It’s his head photoshopped on someone else.

That’s funny.
@BillLegarm: Even better…
for what its worth, a little bit of carl pavano trivia. he was traded from Boston to Montreal for Pedro Martinez around 1999 or so. This was when the indians had two up and coming prospects named Jaret Wright and Bartolo Colon. Montreal’s wish list for trading Pedro was (1) Wright, (2) pavano and (3) colon. the indians refused to trade wright but offered colon. The Expos turned that down and went with Pavano. oh what could have been had we traded wright for pedro!
@ #11 Mike –
We may have been deprived of watching Martinez throw at Derek Jeter’s hands for a few years when he got to Boston. Who would want to miss that?
