Cliff Lee Says No to WBC
January 8, 2009While We’re Waiting…
January 9, 2009We mentioned last week that Ohio State’s Chris “Beanie” Wells may have simply been delaying the inevitable with his “undecided” answers. Not even 72 hours after the end of the 2009 Fiesta Bowl, we get word that Wells (along with Texas Tech’s Michael Crabtree) will declare for the NFL Draft.
Wells issued a statement Thursday saying the move is in the best interest of his family.
The Post thinks that Wells will challenge recently declared Knowshon Moreno for first back taken in the draft. I personally think that a lot of people will be intrigued by Iowa’s (23-year old!) Shonn Greene – though he’s not exactly Craig Krenzel when it comes to academics. I also know that a lot of Browns fans would love to see either Wells or Crabtree in the Orange and Brown come next season, and while I’d love to have either of them, running back and wide receiver are definitely not positions to address with the fifth overall selection in the upcoming draft.

I know my buddy saw Beanie going to the BMV in a white Range Rover yesterday. I’m guessing his agent was handing over the title. Beanie would be a fool if he came back to tOSU.
Anyone who wants Beanie Wells on the Browns needs their head checked.
He was 3-0 against Michigan. Good enough for me.
Just added the WKYC quote for those that want to reiterate that he’s one of like 35 children (as the number grows everytime someone writes it…)
Ray Maluaga is far more enticing than Beanie…..
GL Beanie. Was a pleasure watching you play.
Matt – you’re dead on. Maualuga would be a great pickup and perfect for the Browns.
Hate to see him go, but he needs to. Being even the slightest bit injury prone is reason enough when you’re a RB. Save those miles. And take care of your family. 1 of 13 is it? That’s not even a donut for everyone in the family…
I think he is a very good back with no personal issues but his injury problems might cause him to drop a number of spots in the draft.
As much as I’d like to see a healthy Beanie Wells in a Browns uniform, I really think the team needs a solid linebacker first.
not sold at all on Rey… but really any defensive guy is fine with me
malcolm jenkins.
We need a rb to open up the passing game. No td in how many quarters and we don’t need a rb in the first round?
I like either Aarron Curry or Maualuga at the 5 spot. Call me crazy but would it be feasible to parlay Braylon into some additional picks (I am supposing someone would give up a 1st round pick for him still) and snag Crabtree witht he 5th pick? Is that too high for Crabtree? I’m not certain where he’s projected……and I think that’s maybe not what we need to do anyway. LB seems like the way to go.
First of all, Rini, I spit my water out I laughed so hard when I read the line “That’s not even a donut for everyone in the family…”, so thanks for that. Second, I think we really need to look at Jenkins with the #5 pick. We definetley need to bulk up our secondary. A decent RB may still be available in round 2 to come in and be Lewis’ successor. I personally wouldn’t mind seeing Lauranitis in the brown and orange, but he’ll get taken before we can get him, unless it’s at 5.
This past draft has shown us that good running backs can be found anywhere in the draft – see Slaton, Steve. Every good defense in the NFL has a great mlb and a great saftey, so Maualuga or Taylor Mays would be ideal for me, both are studly
Agreed with Ricky here. Give some examples of his MLB and Safety theory, see Lewis & Reed, Farrior & T.P., and Urlacher & Brown (when both are healthy). Its almost like baseball, you build your defense right down the middle. DTs, LBs, and general a “center fielder” safety. Browns have the DT in Mr. Rogers and could possibly have an MLB in Jackson (i would like to see how he could do at the point of attack, not 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage), but i don’t know if the safties are solid enough. Taylor Mays (as much as i hate him) would be a great fit.
As for the topic of this post.
Get paid Beanie…Before your body breaks down and nobody in the NFL wants to take a chance on damaged goods
I like Glaumdawg’s idea (@ 13) of trading Braylon for some picks, although I wonder how much we’ll be able to get for him right now. I think we need to draft Rey Maualuga with the 5th pick, he’s a high energy monster that reminds me a lot of Troy Palomalu and would really bring some much needed life and energy to our current uh… “defense”. He could free up D’Qwell a little more, and then lets see what we have with Alex Hall and Beau Bell, that linebacker corps might not be too bad. Then in the 2nd Round maybe go after MSU’s Javon Ringer, although I saw on the crawl on ESPN earlier today that Beanie is ranked as the 28 best overall player in the draft so maybe he’ll be available to us early in the 2nd Round if enough teams pass on him fearing his injury-riddled past.
He may indeed be 28th overall and we may be in an era where teams are starting to draft best talent instead of need, but i see Beanie going early-mid first round behind the Georgia RB. I’d love Javon Ringer though. If RB is something the Browns address in the early rounds, my top 5 REASONABLE in accordance with availability would go as follows.
1. Greene (outta Iowa)
2. Ringer
3. C.J. Gable (or any other USC running back that decides to declare)
4. Donald Brown (this is my biggest stretch as far as avail.)
5. Tyrell Sutton or PJ Hill (Both could be guys that some teams avoid because of injury problems, PJ is more of the risk because of his bruising style, but i see good things out of Sutton)
I agree that 5th is too high for Wells. I would love to have him in C-town, but that is a lil too high for him. I think we need to go for:
1) Aaron Curry -LB- He is fast strong, and mean
2) Rey Maualuga -LB- See above
3) Jenkins- I think he is the most NFL ready Defensive player in the draft
Good luck Beanie and thanks for the three great years. I think his chronic injuries will put him to mid-lower first round range and he’ll have an uneven career. When he plays he’ll do fine but will continue his injuries into his pro career.
3-0 vs U of M.
to nick d… rey plays LB, so i dont understand your analogy with him and palomalu. Taylor Mays plays the same position, and is all over the field delivering big hits, and also goes to usc. Also, to let everyone know beanie is #28 on the big board. Maualuga is number 20. why does everyone think the browns will get him at 5? mays is 6 right now.
just for the record though, I am for trading out of the spot to try to get 1 first rounders, or a first second third, something along those lines. the more picks the better right now.
agreed matt. i think malaluga is the way to go
I’ll take the safety from USC whose name is escaping me right now.
RBs are a dime a dozen in the draft….no need to go grabbing one is the first couple of rounds.
I would love to see DA, Braylon (who Mangini is going to hate), Corey Williams, Wimbley and Jamal all traded for picks.
When’s the press conference? I’m there. I love press conferences.
Sincerely,
The Randolph
What they need is a rt guard, rt takle, linbacker, and corner. Go back and look at the games, the running game was better with Tucker, however, he is no longer dependable due to injuries. Without the changes on the rt side of the line the running game will not change much -they need young offensive linemen through the draft that will last a while.
MacNip – Taylor Mays? He’s an absolute beast.
1st Rey
2nd Williams from PSU at WR he is a gammer and adds alot to your O.
Get back into the 3rd and draft the RB from Tulsa can remember his name but he was tough, fast, lean, and shifty reminds me of Johnson from Tennesee Titans.
Also I would trade BE straight up for Larry Johnson. BE has worn his welcome out. Talkin bout the fans booing him well don’t drop 17 passes and there will be no boos.
@ Bobby (21) I realize they play different positions, my analogy had to do with their high-energy style of play (Several NFL scouts, including my best friend’s brother, who is a scout for the Saints, agree). They both bring a lot of emotion and leadership to their defenses, they both play the game with a reckless abandon, and they never quit on any play. Personally, I like the Browns taking Rey at 5 because from what I have seen of him, not only is he very talented and possess the above mentioned qualities, he brings a lot of the intangibles and passion for the game that the Browns desperately need right now.
I do like Taylor Mays, but from what I’ve heard from Mangini, he wants to keep the 3-4 going, so we’ll need good linebackers to fill out that system, my personal preference is Maualaga, however I wouldn’t be unhappy with either Aaron Curry or Aaron Maybin.
Side note: Polamalu did play some linebacker while at USC.
