The Way-Back Machine: NFL Draft Recaps
January 8, 2009Report: Chris “Beanie” Wells to NFL
January 8, 2009Now, some news from the best story of 2008, rather than the worst, the Browns. Cliff Lee has decided to stay away from the World Baseball Classic this year, preferring to keep his training schedule intact. Paul Hoynes has the story.
“Cliff gave it a lot of thought,” said (Lee’s agent) Braunecker, “but he’s coming off the biggest workload of his career. He wanted to stay on track. If, as anticipated, the Indians are a contender this year, he could pitch even more innings.”
This is good news for the Tribe. One of the biggest question marks coming into the year for the Tribe is the starting rotation. They have a lot of options, which is a good thing, but as of right now, there aren’t many answers as to who follows Cliff Lee, Fausto Carmona and (presumably) Carl Pavano in the Tribe’s rotation.
But, because I am in a giving mood, if the WBC wants Jeremy Sowers to fill a spot on their pitching staff, they are welcome to him. Not all WFNY staffers agree. DP selfishly would like the Tribe to keep all its players out of the games. Right now, Grady Sizemore and the newly acquired Mark DeRosa are scheduled to participate in the games which are in March.

I agree. The WBC is meaningless. Save the arms and the legs and keep them fresh. Forget the WBC.
On another note, do these guys have to get permission from the club to do this? I would be angry on a whole new level if Sizemore gets seriously injured.
Amen. Keep our pitchers out of the WBC…the injury risk of making pitchers throw those innings early in the year far, far outweighs any semblance of national pride that I would feel in a USA WBC victory.
That’s why the WBC is just incredibly stupid. In an event where I should, in theory, want to see as many of my beloved Tribe lighting it up on a world-wide stage…I’m just praying that they don’t play and run the risk of getting hurt or totally screwing up their preparation for the MLB regular season.
I’m surprised the Yankees haven’t declared themselves a soverign nation and fielded the entire team in the WBC.
lol @ #3 Jay. How about Red Sox nation? That should count, right?
Ha! After LaPorta got beaned in the head in the Olympics, if it means that I’m selfish that I don’t want to see another Tribe player get hurt, then selfish I be!
