12 Days of a Cleveland Fan Christmas Continue!
December 12, 2008The Browns Will Win If…
December 12, 2008From the category of beating a dead horse, in this case also known as the steaming pile of corpse that is Larry Hughes’ career, I give you epic injury fail. Apparently, Larry Hughes was all set to be traded back to the only place where he could play basketball and have fun pressure free in Washington DC. Then, Hughes couldn’t stop tripping over his own feet and injured his shoulder in October when the trade was supposedly going down. For some reason the Wizards fans still want Hughes back after all this time has passed, when they already have an injury-riddled salary on the books with Gilbert Arenas.
One Wizards blogger at Bullets Forever, has set up this trade as desirable where the Wizards send Etan Thomas, Oleksiy Pecherov, and DeShawn Stevenson to the Bulls in exchange for Hughes. I have to say I like it on a number of fronts. First, it puts Larry Hughes on the Wizards so that the Cavs can stomp him as a part of their annual playoff beating of the former Bullets. Secondly, it puts Deshawn Stevenson in a Bulls jersey so that the Cavs can face him in their own division. I certainly would love to see Deshawn waving his hand in front of his face after made baskets by Derrick Rose and Ben Gordon has he watches from the bench.

“First, it puts Larry Hughes on the Wizards so that the Cavs can stomp him as a part of their annual playoff beating of the former Bullets.”
Sad to say, but with the Wiz sitting on 4 wins right now I don’t think this is happening this year.
but…but…but what about the ‘rivalry?’ 🙂
Hughes finishes off Knicks with backbreaking 3 in final minute
CHICAGO — Larry Hughes is never bashful about taking a shot. What he really enjoys is putting one up in a tight game.
“I’m not going to turn them down. It’s going to be one of two things. It’s going to go in or it’s not. As long as it’s a good look and one of my teammates finds me, I’m definitely willing to take the shot,” …
Deshawn/Gooden beard off? OH SNAP!
Maybe they are hoping Larry Hughes will lure James to WA in 2010….
I know it’s easy to phrase this how you did, but that trade proposal came from one member of Bullets Forever in a FanPost. It doesn’t speak for the opinions of the entire site, and there’s a disclaimer that says the exact same thing.
The way you wrote that sentence is really misleading. I’d appreciate you changing it, to be honest. Now, everyone’s here is going to think the entire blog wants Larry Hughes back.
Edit: I noticed that was Jake’s proposal, so it wasn’t in a FanPost. Nevertheless, he was just throwing it out there. Attribute it to him, not the entire blog.
HIBACHI!!!
To think i used to want a Larry Hughes jersey. Thank goodness Alaska fan gear shops only know the name LeBron James. I may have had two bad jersey purchases on my hands (DA jersey i purchased this summer not looking the greatest).
Why do you rip on Hughes so much? It is not like he was a bad personality. He just didn’t meet expectations. It seems like you have a personal thing with the guy. You love tearing him down for no real reason. He isn’t even on the Cavs anymore. Let it rest.
“It is not like he was a bad personality.”
No, not at all. Other than openly stating that he wasn’t interesting in playing team basketball and was more concerned with getting his shots and his fan mail. Yeah, he was a choir boy.
Larry just wants to “have fun.”

What was that quote from last year, about how it was more important to him to “have fun” than to win games? I wish I had a link to Hughes’ exact quote to post in response here.
If having fun is more important than winning, that would be a bad personality for a paid professional, yes.
Larry Hughes turned out to be one of the guys who embodies everything that is wrong in pro sports, and I have an extra special place in my heart for hating on him whenever possible. Call it a crutch, but I find it funny. Every time I come across something I send the link to the other WFNY authors with “BWAHAHAHAHAHA” in the subject line. If that is so wrong, then I just don’t want to be right.
Here is an article with the LH quote in question.
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/11878-chicago-bulls-larry-hughes-plays-for-himself
”I play to enjoy myself,” he said. Note the word ”myself.”
”Some people take this the wrong way, but winning a championship is not what I base everything on,” he said. Sure hate to take that the wrong way.
”I was given an opportunity to play basketball, travel around and have fun doing it, and that’s what I want to do,” he said. ”I wouldn’t take being unhappy and not being myself and winning. I would rather enjoy myself with 18,000 to 20,000 people watching the game and the people sending fan mail and those things, and be happy.”

I should probably also mention that I thought the Wizards were going to get burned on the Kwame Brown trade when it first went down, which shows that I’m not always in lock-step with most Wizard fans…or common sense.
Thanks for sharing those links and posting the quotes, DP and Craig.
I’m still astounded that a professional athlete playing at the absolute highest level of his sport could (a) have that kind of attitude, and (b) not have the basic smarts to figure out what a bad idea it is to publicize it.
If Danny Ferry were to accomplish nothing else as GM, I will always be impressed that he was able to unload that albatross.
Especially glad you posted those quotes, DP. Since when did the Beacon Journal (Ohio.com) start charging for article access? March 4, 2008 isn’t exactly ancient history…
Ya, like the time he beat us as point guard and shooting guard with the CAVS and Washington and beat Billips with Detroit and won the Division and we didn’t?
Kicked our can too many times the last ten years its sad. Funny we rip on Hughes, when our big pick Noah is a bust, no bad press, Deng, an all star, Gordon, plays one side of the court all the rest except Rose, won’t pass the 4 year average in the NBA, Rose will get hurt at 40 plus minutes on a poor team though ruining future promise. Hughes on year eleven, has 36 3 pointers this year to Rose 14 with half the minutes, yet your high school teen doesn’t like his miss.
does not even no defense (thats why he is always in the last quarter when its tied) and you need defense. Sad, but the dude should play, don’t like him, get rid of him, but don’t bench your third leading scorer, dumb.
