Cavaliers Preview Game #4
November 3, 2008Like the Stench of a Dead Woodchuck Rotting Under the Porch…
November 3, 2008Wow. WOW. I can’t believe it.
Just saw a Breaking News ticker run across my screen on ESPN: Trent Dilfer is reporting that Quinn will start on Thursday. I will post a link when I get confirmation. *UPDATE* Mary Kay Cabot confirms | ESPN.com article (h/t Grant in comments)
Also, Jurevicius says he will be back in 2009, for what it’s worth.
Alright… discuss!

I hope the line holds up for him, hate to see Brady get pounded… I do wonder why now though????
DA played worse in many other games this year, and while the last part of the game was very ugly, I didn’t think he was that bad for the first 3 quarters this past week…
Do I still want to see BQ start, yes… but I have to ask myself why now and not after the Cincy game???
WoooooooooooooHooooooooooo! It’s about time. I heard DA was called into RAC’s office at about 4 to be given the pink slip.
I’m thinking management told RAC that if he doesn’t play BQ, he’s out of here.
It’s the perfect game for BQ to get used to being a starter. Playing a terrible D, at home, and with no real playoff hopes left… They probably figure this is the least pressure he can have for making his first start.
Wish this would’ve game at the beginning of the year, but oh well. Now let’s all pray he turns out to be what we all hoped and dreamed of.
Great if it’s true, but I’ll believe it when I see it.
Well, here’s a link:

Post updated: MKC confirms on Cleveland.com.
Anderson better not have been given the pink slip, he should still warrant at least a draft pick in a trade, or he will be the backup QB…because if anything should happen to Quinn, I dont think anyone wants to see Dorsey as our starter.
The season is over, and DA has already effectively destroyed whatever trade value he had, so what’s the possible argument against starting BQ?
BOUT FRIGGIN TIME!!!!
Everyone better give him the same opportunity to perform that DA got. I don’t care if he’s going against the Denver Bronco’s D, people shouldn’t have huge expectations, he hasn’t played a legit game since he wore a gold helmet. And now they only give him 3 days to prepare with the first-team.
I’m as big a BQ believer as the next guy but our QB isn’t the only problem with this team. I hope the only miracle everyone is looking forward too on Thursday is that DA will be holding a clipboard for 4 quarters.
It’s nakey time!!!! PING!!!!
Nice Dana Carvey ref, IRB!!
DA might still have a job if Romeo hadn’t switched to a watered down prevent in the third quarter, as well as going to a predictable run-run-pass offense. But I digress.
I look for Quinn just to manage the game. I expect a heavy dose of Jamal on Thursday to help Brady get acclimated.
Dilfer is slamming he Browns for this move.
“You never bench the starting quarterback on a bad football team.”. “Absolute joke.”
Sour grapes? Knee-jerk reaction?
Chris Mortenson just said on SportsCenter that this move was driven by the negativity from the fans. Now, I’m all for this move to BQ, but if this organization is making moves in reaction to the fans….well, then this franchise is in bigger trouble than we ever thought.
“You never bench the starting quarterback on a bad football team.”
Um, really? Why not? That seems like PRECISELY the kind of team who would bench their starting QB. Has Dilfer actually watched DA play other than the Giants game this year?
Oh yeah, I forgot, it’s Winslow’s fault! 🙂
I got goosebumps reading this! ESPN (the TV version) is now confirming this as well.
Steve Young says that there is no reason why he can’t be a top 10 or top 15 quarterback in the league within the next year or two.
“A gutless attempt to sell tickets”
-Dilfer
Apparently TD learned nothing while he was here. The tickets for this season were sold back in May. What an idiot. Just because he got benched for a guy who got benched/traded for a guy who just got benched…
Well, now all those Brady Backers will have to see how right or wrong they really are. I have been a DA guy all the way. I am concerned with them throwing brady in on a week where we have 3 days to prepare. But if any one change was going to turn this season around, this would be it.
Bobby,
I don’t think the team is at the point of trying to turn things around. It’s pretty much over at this point. They aren’t passing both Baltmore and Pittsburgh, unless Brady pulls a [Tom] Brady of 2001.
This is more about taking stock and seeing what we have before the end of the year, so they can make a sound decision on how to move forward.
WOW, does Trent Dilfer have a SERIOUS ax to grind with Phil Savage. He’s almost shouting on MNC right now about how terrible our front office is, and in defense of DA.
I saw it, too, Dan. He just came across as bitter and spiteful. This CLEARLY is about more than just benching DA for Dilfer. Sorry, Trent, but I just don’t care about your feelings or DA’s feelings. This is a business, and DA was obviously not getting the job done. The Browns’ season is over and they have nothing left to play for. So it’s time to see what we have for the future so we can take care of our deficiencies in the offseason.
Chris Mortenson just said on SportsCenter that this move was driven by the negativity from the fans. Now, I’m all for this move to BQ, but if this organization is making moves in reaction to the fans….well, then this franchise is in bigger trouble than we ever thought.
Rock – when was the last time you saw this team make a move that wasn’t something the fans have been screaming about? I mean, the only time I can think of is after the opener at home against Pitt last year, when everyone was screaming for Brady. In fact, every major move in the last 10 years that I can think of (Couch vs Holcomb, coaches getting fired, etc, etc)…I’ve said for years now, the fans have almost always dictated what this organization does.
I’m not saying it’s not BQ time…but if word out of Browns camp is “we’re starting him cause the fans are flipping out” rather than “we’re starting him because DA sucks my left toe,” then that’s a MAJOR problem. That almost sounds like they want to set BQ up for failure this week – 2nd year quarterback starting his first game on 3 days prep? Really? Wouldn’t the smarter move be to start him on a Monday night after a 10 day rest?
I’m ecstatic the DA era might be over…but if this works this week, it will be in spite of the coaches and management rather than because of them.
I’m so excited I just giggled like Bobby Hill. 🙂 eeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhh 🙂
Yeah, Dilfer brought the heat on that one. While I don’t totally disagree with everything he said, I would ask him this: when would be a better time to find out what we have in BQ? The playoffs are out of the picture (in other words, no more “must win” pressure) and we are into a part of the schedule that is relatively soft (allowing Quinn to get acclimated). By Dilfer’s theory “you don’t bench the QB on a bad team”, but DA’s play has contributed a great deal to the team being in that situation in the first place! So basically you have to play a struggling QB until the team gets good (not quite sure how that works), then make the change. Dilfer did make one excellent point: BQ better perform, or it won’t be long until the fans turn on him as well. All I want and expect to see is steady play and good decision-making: I don’t need the kid to walk across Lake Erie like some seem to be expecting. Let’s hope he gives this team something better to build around for next year.
I am glad that you guys saw Dilfer on ESPN he was driving me crazy by blasting the Browns. He’s lucky that wasn’t a call in show or he would have heard it from Browns fans.
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DA has not progressed at all this season. He makes the same mistakes that he made a year ago. Yesterday’s loss wasn’t just on him. The move obviously has approval(or direction) from the top of the org., or it wouldn’t have happened. BQ may not be the answer to this season, but the season is over. Let BQ show what he can do, and if he fails miserably we’ll have a shot a QB in the draft. He may surprise us and actually progress as a QB. The opposite of what DA has done.
So let me get this straight.
A season and a half isn’t enough time for Brady to get the starting job.
But three days are?
How many bad throws until the fans start chanting “Dor-sey, Dor-sey!” ???
The smart fans are chanting “Cowher, Cowher” …. Crennel needs to go as well.
Obviously Trent Dilfer doesn’t know that the Browns don’t need to do stuff to sell tickets….their stadium is full whether they’re good or bad.
Jealous, Trent?!
The fans will never be calling for Dorsey. Cleveland has a pretty football savy fan base, and the fact that decisions are made based on us just reflects our managements tendencies to not make the moves that obviously need to be made. Now DA was Crennel’s guy, and from what I’ve heard, a lot of the higher ups have been pressuring Crennel to start Quinn for a long time now, but he was too stubborn to make the switch. Quinn even had Jim Brown’s endorsement about a month and a half ago if that tells you how they felt.
Well, here we go. I just hope everyone who’s been calling for BQ was right.
And just when I thought I had no reason to watch the game, a big fat one falls right in my lap.
Yeah I guess I am recording Smallville now. I am a huge Quinn guy, but I am not expecting him to save our season. We never saw any progression or even consistency from Anderson. That is what I expect to see from Quinn. We have some holes on offense that will need fixing in the offseason. Stallworth was a waste of money, Edwards can’t catch consistently, and we don’t know what will happen with Sgt Winslow, (here is hoping he stays). I just want to Quinn to be accurate, get rid of the ball quickly or run out of the pocket like he is fully capable of and not turn the ball over at horrible times. That was Anderson’s MO, when the game was on the line, interception. Quinn will do enough the rest of the season for us to feel better about QB come draft time and then with the right moves, contend next year.
Man, this is scary. If Quinn is a bust, not trying to jinx here, but damn. Back to the rebuilding phase again.
Oh and Trent Dilfer is a bum, he doesn’t know anything. God I hope Brady proves all those idiots wrong at Evil Sports Network.
“I look for Quinn just to manage the game. I expect a heavy dose of Jamal on Thursday to help Brady get acclimated.”
I expect you’re right, but this is a terrible idea. The broncos will expect it and stack the box, putting us in 3rd and longs all night. You just can’t win playing scared.
“You never bench the starting quarterback on a bad football team.”
This is an absurd comment. Do you bench the QB on a good football team Trent, or is your opinion that you never bench the QB?
To show my support for Quinn, he’s starting on my fantasy team this week.
(I lost Brady, and now Orton.)
lol@marco….tough fantasy times…
Sorry to change subject, but what’s with that B.S. on yahoo sports page? Detroit getting Iverson and getting rid of Billips and McDyes to get Lebron?
Yes, the smart fans are indeed chanting Cowher. The wife keeps asking me why we haven’t fired Romeo, this is his fault not DAs. The only thing I can think of is they don’t trust any of the assistants to step up as interm, especially Chud who would likely want the starting job after and they don’t want to lose him.
DA has not been as horrible as it first appears. Imagine how our season may be if Edwards could actually catch a football, but sadly we can’t bench him. Stallworth is working about ass well for us as Mo Vaughn worked for the Angels.
I only hope that growing up a Browns fan will give Quinn a lil extra emotional boost to beat the Broncos in his first NFL start.
@ Zach “Cleveland has a pretty football savy fan base”
Passionate? Absolutely. Savy? Maybe. I knew more fans that wanted the team to draft Quinn at #3 rather than Joe Thomas. That’s not savvy – that’s dumb. You build your lines.
Most fans would also say the Wimbley pick was better than taking Ngata – which has proven to be a big mistake. If this town was as savvy as you say, there would be one million “Fire Crennel” signs hanging in Cuyahoga County.
Have to admit i’m a little nervous. I’m not on the Brady bandwagen but yes something needs to be done. What happens if Edwards can’t can’t his throws… who’s he goona yell at then… what if the O line continues to allow holes… what if the D keeps letting the passing game get by us… what happens if we still see Crennel next year… there are too many what if’s. I don’t see this just being a DA issue… it’s a Browns issue
On another note i’m so excited that JJ isn’t retireing yet!!! I’ve been following him well since 1990 when i started at Lake Catholic with him… he’s an amazing guy and we need him out there.
I don’t think anyone would say picking Wimbley over Ngata is the right decision if you’re talking about now. But you really can’t speculate about the draft like that because no one really knows how players will turn out in the pro level. There have been countless first round picks who have faded into busts, on every team. Its impossible to tell at the time of the draft or Tom Brady would have been a number 1 pick instead of the 199th.
Trent Dilfer….*slow clap*
I still think we should have picked Ricky Williams over Tim Couch in our first draft back, even with all the BS, Jim Brown would have kept his head in the game.
Haha marco I am in the exact same situation. Brady>Orton>Quinn. Tough year for fantasy. But anyway, Trent Dilfer is so bitter towards the Browns it’s ridiculous. A lot has already been mentioned about the selling tickets and never benching a QB on a bad team. But honestly, I think that although I can’t wait to see Brady, I am concerned about the timing of this and why. Also the game is on thursday, which is even more bizarre. I guess we will just have to see what happens and hopefully we made the right move…
Could the short week possibly help Quinn? Not give him / the media / the city too much time to start some Brady hysteria?
I think one reason for the move could be if they played Anderson and he lights up the weak DEN pass defense, that buys him even more time. Time to just pull the trigger on this QB situation and go from there.
As the Foo Fighters said, “There’s nothing left to lose” the playoffs are out of the question.
DA’s been scapegoated. He was a problem, but he was not the only problem, and now the Browns have thrown him under the bus to distract the fans from the fact that so many other things have failed. DA brought this on himself by underperforming, but this is all about misdirection.
Maybe now that the heat is all on BQ, the rest of the team will be a little more loose and perform like professsional athletes who have some pride in their jobs. I’m looking at you Stallworth and Edwards. You, too, linebackers.
My only hesitation is bringing in BQ on a short week where he won’t have much time to prep with the first team offense for Denver on Thursday night. This move tells me that Savage/Crennel think we have a better shot to win with an underprepared BQ versus a seasoned DA, and that’s either a testiment as to how good they think Quinn is right now, or how far out of the playoff picture they think we are right now.
