Waiting For Next Year: 2008 Holiday Gift Guide
November 14, 2008WFNY Podcast LIVE Tonight at 6:00 PM
November 14, 2008Though it obviously isn’t a sport of major consequence even here in Ohio, I wanted to give a worthy hat-tip to the Columbus Crew, who finally won their first MLS Eastern Conference Championship last night, beating arch-nemesis Chicago 2-1 in Columbus.
The Crew found themselves down in the first half 1-0, a goal all the more painful in that it was scored by former Crew (and long-time fan favorite) Brian McBride. But, in complete disdain for general Ohio sports mojo, the Crew rallied for two goals in the second half to take home the conference crown that had eluded them in five previous tries in the EC Finals. They will play the winner of the New York Red Bulls / Real Salt Lake WCF matchup this weekend in the MLS Cup on November 23.
Cheers to finally getting over the hump, and good luck in the MLS Cup, Crew!

Great Job Crew.
I was at the game, and it was an amazing 15 minutes after halftime. Some seriously great soccer. Columbus was tight in the first half, and looked very tentative, but went for the jugular in the 2nd period, and it paid off. Schelotto put in his best performance of the season.
MLS is still the fifth estate when it comes to professional sports in the US, but for those of us that enjoy it, last night was tremendous.
Where is the MLS Final being played?
It’s in Carson, CA.
Good for the Crew.
Odd seeing this blog cover soccer, however Cleveland has a team of their own that plays at Cleveland State’s Krenzler Field. We actually just won the USL-2 Championship, and haven’t had a losing season in the two years we’ve been in existence. Not only have the team been amazing since their inception, we’ve got a loyal fan base (Green Army), players playing on National Clubs (Sierra Leone), and the team has won numerous awards for outstanding management and best run club.
Cleveland City Stars, check them out.
5th? Really? Behind the National Soccer on Ice League? I many people that watch MLS. I know exactly zero that watch NHL.
