Report: Brady Quinn, Broken Finger
November 20, 2008About Antonio McDyess…
November 20, 2008Despite all of the news and rumors circulating around the Phil Savage e-mail incident, I was purposely waiting to touch on it until it was confirmed. Well…it has been confirmed.
If you’re a bit out of the loop, let me catch you up.
Fan fires a shot in the dark and sends an email to Phil.
You are easily the worst GM in the NFL. Chud, Crennel and Tucker should NOT have jobs. How the hell do you play prevent defense the entire game? How do you NOT use Jerome Harrison more? Why the hell would you throw the ball with 6 minutes left? This is officially a regime that is worse than Butch Davis’. By the way, just like last week – this email was written while the Browns still had the lead.
A bit harsh? Probably. The worst GM? Not even close. It isn’t like Phil’s calling the plays here. Now, is Phil responsible for his coaches? Most definitely. Though I’m not sure what he can do about that intra-game. But much to the surprise of many, Phil actually replied…
From: Savage, Phil
Subject: Re: Browns

Date: Tuesday, November 18, 2008, 12:17 AMGo root for Buffalo-f#@* you-
Wow. You can imagine why I was a bit surprised to the point of thinking that this was all fabricated. Perhaps it was someone in charge of replying to Phil’s emails? I mean, the GM of a professional team is emailing fans after midnight? Plus…Buffalo? At least pick a team that fans here would enjoy rooting for! But I digress…
With the AP and Romeo Crennel stepping up in Phil’s defense, it makes me wonder. After the handling of the Kellen Winslow situation, and then the swap of Brady Quinn for Derek Anderson, is Savage alright? As in mentally. He’s a solid addition to this city. But he’s obviously had to deal with unhappy fans before – I mean, he’s in Cleveland for Pete’s sake. It’s a tough time – I get that. But to tell a fan, who likely pays a portion of his salary, to eff himself?
So, what say you, Browns fans? I’m a big fan of Savage, so do not think of this as anything aside from a question. While I did not agree with the Winslow issue, I surely hope that he isn’t cracking to the point of wanting out. I’m not sure I can take another rebuilding period…especially considering that I don’t think we’re fully “built” at this current state.

The Browns are a joke.
My 10 year run as a ticket holder might be over after this year. The only thing that keeps me around is people keep buying my tickets when I don’t go….
http://www.cowher09.com
When I read the headline I expected Savage’s expletive to come in relation to the teams’ play–as in “this team looks like “sh*t”.
I for one am not surprised, Savage had purposely kept a low media profile and has a general disdain for such. (it’s that obvious). He had a mammoth ego…….he has shown to be thinned skinned time after time (just go back a few weeks to the Winslow response).
I for one am not at all surprised at the depth of Savage’s thin skin.
He’s definitely feeling the heat, and deservedly so. He DID hire Romeo and his drafts have been abysmal. He can’t hide for much longer nor manage by Blackberry forever. He and Romeo should both be shoved out of this town on their cans-they both know that is a definite probability and are content for it to happen so they can collect the full value of their contracts. Believe me…….Savage (and Crennel) really DON’T care, I just wish the media would get that simple fact.
Not as Christian-like a response as Mr. Savage portrays himself to the community. He’s an amateur, at best a scout and at worst in way over his head (as is his lame coach) with no desire to do the real duties of a GM. Do another once-over of his four year draft record before you shed too many tears for our about to be past “GM”. And, get over this rebuilding thing…….a professional coach and GM can get things moving but this regime is worse than rebuilding, please.
To be honest, the fan in question said Butch Davis had a better stay in Cleveland. That in itself should merit the “delete” button.
Come on Phil, one clown drunk emailing you shouldn’t warrant a “F#@& You”. However, I’m amazingly refreshed by this candor.
The main problem I have with Savage is that he’s kept Crennel way way way too long. I can’t handle starting from scratch again either.
Maybe there is history and he’s just keeping his mouth shut like a man? Why does Savage get called out, but the recipient gets to hide? f#@* that
Who cares? I mean really. Unless there’s some kind of rule in the NFL that i don’t know about that GMs can’t reply to a “fan’s” email with a curse word, i don’t see what the big deal is. It was one fan who went on a character assassination of a man who’s team has had a bad season, a quarterback change, a ton of injuries, and an incompetent coach. The dude is obviously under extreme stress as a GM in a city with a notoriously rabid fanbase. I don’t blame the guy for being a little irritable. I don’t know about the rest of you guys, but if i received an unwarranted email like that from some idiot, i would not have been half as gracious as Phil was. Phil isn’t perfect, but like you said, half the stuff he was accused of was in game stuff that he has little to no control over. Its not like he said, “To all of Cleveland, F— you!” He said it to one guy… who frankly would have pissed me off too.
Savage’s drafts have been abysmal, Randy? I really couldn’t disagree more. Of course he hasn’t hit on every pick and Kam Wimbley looks like a bust, but a lot of our starters are his draft picks and they are young and getting better. I know a lot of people are down on B-Mac, but I am not one of them, and what was he, a 5th round pick? Vickers and Harrison were late round steals as well. I could go on, but I still feel like Braylon can be an elite WR and a lot of his other picks are going to be or already are good starters for us. And I know, he did hire Romeo, and he is an awful head coach, but consider the other coaches that were hired that year. Mike Nolan has already been fired. The pickings were slim, but still, Savage (and Lerner) still hired a moron. But to say his drafts have been abysmal I think is totally offbase
That said, I like Phil Savage the talent evaluator, but I really don’t think he is a people person. He just doesn’t seem to interact well with others. As evident by his handling of Winslow, almost getting fired after one year on the job, and this email
I wonder if he was just drinking too much during the 4th quarter, assuming the Browns were going to lose. God knows I certainly was. Where do you get Phil Savage’s email anyways?
@RandyOSU – The funny thing is that he DIDN’T hire Romeo. I think that was a John Collins move before he and Savage had a chance to butt heads. It is even weirder because Romeo stuck up for Phil in that battle. Maybe that is why Phil hasn’t unceremoniously dumped Romeo? First of all, he can’t take huge blame for it because he didn’t hire him, and secondly Romeo had his back vs. Collins.
It’s amateur hour in Cleveland once again. Thanks to Phil for providing more fodder for ridicule from the national punditry. Between this ridiculous incident, the horrible coaching, the underachieving, and the handling of the Winslow/staph issue, I’m sure free agents will really be clamoring to come to town. And I’m sure the current players love the circus atmosphere.
I hate the idea of another rebuliding, but that doesn’t mean we should be content to let this train-wreck continue–we need to be building a WINNER, not a joke. “The Chin” for coach/GM in ’09.
Ricky-I said once over his FOUR YEAR’s worth of drafts, not pick out one or two successes (I mean come on). Go ahead, publish the entire 4 year’s worth of drafts here and then comment on them ok? Do yourself a favor and get those facts.
Chris M-Butch Davis got the Browns in the playoffs. In year two. Enough with the Davis assignations, you’ve not got a four year record with Phil/Crennel on their own right so feel free to comment on that.
To all those suggesting they’d have said the same or worse to an emailer, you aren’t thinking in terms of what it takes to LEAD an organization as a GM, and be the titular head of such. It’s simply embarrassing and plain assinine (if not childish) by someone with such a title.
And Ricky, please don’t lavish too much praise for hitting on the third picks of drafts (aka Braylon Edwards). I’m sure you study drafts like I do and those types of picks can be made in anyone’s basement. It’s the rest of the drafts upon which teams are build. Look at the rosters of teams like the Steelers, Patriots, et al. They don’t build teams with Travis Wilson’s (and he’s the norm in the Savage draft regime, not the aboration).
As you said,,,I could go on and on and on. Please look up the entire four years of Savage drafts here and then comment.
Savage is a great scout. Perhaps he might make a fine VP of Personnel or head of a scouting department… for for all his talent evaluation skills, this is just the latest demonstration that he lacks the savvy to be an NFL GM. He lacks the leadership qualities, the good business sense, and the PR skills to effectively lead an organization.
Randy Lerner needs to wake up and set the tone for his father’s organization. If he is not willing to do so, then it’s time to find an owner that will. Take charge, Randy, or sell the team already!
The thing I find most interesting about this is that Romeo comes out and confirms this thing… an attempt to make sure Savage joins him in the unemployment line after this season?
xxxxxxxxx = RockKing ? Hmmmmm….
No offense, Randy, but Butch Davis passed on Tomlinson and Richard Seymour to pick Gerard Warren at #3, so one would wonder then if BD WAS making the picks in his basement.

Shhhh, DC…….I want to keep it quiet.
Actually, speaking of keeping it quiet, to be honest with you, if it WAS me, I honestly think I would not have leaked it. Not because I think Phil was right, I think he was egregiously wrong…..but this is the last thing the Browns need right now. I’m sick of seeing negative stories about the Browns on ESPN every week, and I would have kept it quiet out of loyalty to the Browns. But that’s just me.
Anyway, that’s why Lerner has to fire Savage now. Savage has drug the Browns name through mud so freaking much this season, that Lerner really has no choice.
Last time i checked, most of us, use the same type language. Im sure the emailer that provoked Savage was a drunk fair weathered fan and probably caught Phil at a bad time. I understand that the Browns are not living up to the hype, but is that Phils fault, no where did he suggest to the NFL to make the Browns the “sexy” pick to win it all before the season. Savage has done a good job with the talent on the field, now we need to work on the coaches. Crennel needs to go, this guy can not coach, if he could order a play as well as a Big Mac we would be undefeated. Time to bring in Cowher!!
And, also FWIW:
Before everyone shoves Savage out the door and gives Cowher the GM job as well as the coach’s job, let’s not forget that Cowher himself had a GM in Pittsburgh: Kevin Colbert (title: Director of Football Operations, but read: GM). Colbert has been in Pittsburgh since 2000. In other words, Colbert did as much (or more, arguably) to build (in the sense of the word build of “drafting and signing players”) the Super Bowl winner as Cowher did.
Just some food for thought.
Yeah DP I thought as much about Cowher myself. He was just the coach, who did obviously have some say in personnel, but was the coach. How do we know he would be great at both roles here next year? I don’t. I think with a good GM, Butch Davis would have made it in the NFL, but he couldn’t draft either. Savage was not a GM in Baltimore, he was in charge of scouting, I think. He did a great job there and Newsome recommended him for a GM position. I think this year and the incidents show he is not suited for this role.
Everyone is talking about dreading a rebuilding period. Well who says those have to take forever? Just because KC sucks and has been rebuilding forever doesn’t mean we will. Look at Miami. They get Parcells and a good young coach, and go from one win to contention for a playoff spot. We probably have more talent than they did coming into the year. If we had a coach who built a style around the players we have, (4-3 Defense) for example, we could make a good turn around as well.
I don’t think all is lost here. But I too am tired of the negative stories and it is probably time to say goodbye to Savage and all the coaches.
People didnt think Phil was the worst GM in the NFL when he drafted Thomas and Quinn back in 07.
“People didnt think Phil was the worst GM in the NFL when he drafted Thomas and Quinn back in 07.”
Aside from the fact that he had his share of busts (and just criticism) at that time, that was also before he decided to show his ass to everyone this year… first with K2 and now this…
It’s behavior completely unbecoming an NFL GM.
The way I see it DP, Cowher likely won’t be a great GM–most coaches who try to fill that role don’t handle the two well. But I don’t think Savage would be willing to stay on with reduced power, and I don’t know that Cowher can be had without control of personnel–at least in the beginning to see how it goes. And if the choice is between another year of RAC, a retread (Martyball? Really?), or Cowher, I’ll take Cowher, even if it means not having an experienced GM. Look at a guy like Mike Holmgren–tried the coach/GM gig, realized it wasn’t working, and brought in help. Cowher the coach is the important thing.
Well, the email is completely unprofessional. Savage is gone at the end of the year. Or at least his role will be dimished. I guarantee you Lerner will not be happy when he hear’s about this.
Cowher had control in Pitt. The GM could make suggestions but it was Cowher’s call
Something is clearly wrong with this organization……and I’m not even talking about their on-field ineptitude. The spat between Winslow and Savage was a huge red flag. As much of a primadonna as K2 is, there is absolutely no justification for the way Savage handled it. His ego is obviously getting in the way of his job. The same could be said for LeCharles Bentley. I realize he was never going to play for the team again but Savage seemed to go out of his way to make him miserable.
Savage is almost like the GM version of Gary Barnett (“She was a terrible kicker”). Just because you may be right about something, it doesn’t mean you can just go out and say it.
It’s a fair question…whether the pressure is affecting Savage’s health. As many commenters here touch upon, he had to know that such an email could only turn out badly for the organization, but he sent it anyway. Even viewed in the best light, there’s no question it’s a distraction from the team’s business of winning ballgames. Absolutely “the last thing the Browns need right now.”
Not sure Cowher is the answer either though. Would like somebody hungrier — more “up and coming.”
at least someone in the browns staff shows emotion….
Goodbye Fatman and Opie!!!
Bring on the Chin baby……yea.
SOURCE: BROWNS PURSUING COWHER
Posted by Mike Florio on November 20, 2008, 5:00 p.m.
A source with knowledge of the situation tells us that the Browns have approached former Steelers coach Bill Cowher regarding the possibility of becoming the next coach in Cleveland.
Per the source, the Browns are willing to give Cowher a contract worth $8 million to $9 million per year.
Presumably, Cowher’s arrival would occur only if G.M. Phil Savage were fired or significantly marginalized. (Maybe Savage can go work for the Bills — or if all else fails he can root for them.) Cowher would want final say over personnel, and Cowher would want to install one or more of his former Steelers colleagues into key positions.
Likely candidates, if they can finagle a path out of Pittsburgh, would be director of football operations Kevin Colbert and/or director of business operations Omar Khan.
Cowher played for the Browns (i.e., Ravens) from 1980 through 1982, and he served as special teams coach in 1985 and 1986. He was moved to defensive backs coach in 1987, and he remained in that position through 1988.
Call me cynical (you won’t be the first), but if Cowher wants/needs Colbert to come here:
There’s no way Pittsburgh lets him go to the Browns without SIGNIFICANT compensation. You don’t let your director of football personnel for eight years and a SB championship walk to your most heated rival without getting something in return. And this ain’t exactly the Chiefs trying to get Herm Edwards.
And, I’m not going to lie: building a winner with an entire organization of Ravens would be one thing. Doing it with an entire organization of Steelers… ugh. I don’t know. Something seems nauseating about it.
I’m cool with what Phil said, in my mind, a person is just liable to lash out a little bit when having to deal with the drama and frustration surrounding the team’s direction.
I mean, really, it would be like building a sports guy with your bare hands, out of some of the best parts available, with some of the best engineers you could find. Then finding out that the guy driving this machine is a drunk, high, 14 year-old and his maintenance guy is that 14 year-old’s little brother. I mean, think about the way the coach has been handling situations related to in-game and personnel. When did he actually first mention Brady Quinn’s name? I don’t even think he has. In the offseason – he was ‘the quarterback’ and following the win over Buffalo, he didn’t even reflect on Quinn’s play (most coaches would say SOMETHING about the guy who is your first round draft pick / possible franchise QB’s second career start) until someone ELSE brought it up.
Same thing with guys like Alex Hall, Jerome Harrison, and Josh Cribbs. I think most anyone would agree that these guys deserve more PT – no doubt about it. But Harrison barely gets touches (I don’t even know if we’ve ever used 2 RB’s on the field at the same time), Alex Hall is a situational pass rusher only (even though he’s one of the few that CAN tackle), and Josh Cribbs… no more need be said. Supposedly, the reason he isn’t in on offense as much is because “we don’t want to burn him out” (Crennel). Well, guess what – Adrian Peterson spent last year returning kicks, catching passes, AND running for an NFL rookie rushing record – he seemed to hold up ok, and that was as a rookie. Talent SHOULD be the reason guys are on the field…but Crennel is someone who just doesn’t get it. I bet when (and if) we get a real coach, you’ll *magically* see the team playing better.
Cowher was a good coach though (although because he was with the Steelers for so long I want Marty back, but if we did get Cowher I wouldn’t complain), so its not like he was a product of great players and talent evaluators. Few coaches got more out of their players than Cowher did. B-bo, definitely agree about coaches with GM powers, it fails far more often then it works. Although I don’t think Marty is a retread, do you think San Diego wishes they had him right about now?
And Randy, looking at Savage’s drafts, I still think they are good. He can’t be expected to hit on all of his picks, hell not even 50% of his picks should be expected to make it in the NFL. Its too early to know anything about the 2008 draft, considering that it was all 2nd day picks (getting Shaun Rogers was a steal though…Corey Williams not so much), but 2007 looks like it was a great draft, 2006 was pretty good, although I will admit 2005 was average at best, it was his first year, and while I guess I agree to an extent to what you said about the #3 overall pick but the Browns have botched so many high picks since 1999 that it isn’t such a no brainer when picking that high. Also, look at the guys drafted right around Braylon Edwards, like Alex Smith, Cadillac Williams, Cedric Benson, Pac Man, Troy Williamson, they are all busts. Ronnie Brown, selected 2nd, is good but has injury problems. But in a draft like 2007, to hit on 4 out of 7 picks, that is very good and any team would love to have a draft like that because it is pretty rare. Look around the NFL, the good teams find talent late in the draft but they don’t hit on the majority of their picks.
I’m not saying that Savage is an elite GM, but when it comes to talent evaluation he is one of the best if you look over his entire career going back to when he was with Baltimore. He does need to work on his leadership skills, part of this seasons ridiculousness has been his doing. Hell, someone in this organization needs to step up and take control, take responsibility for this team and the chaos that has been this season, and right the ship.
RandyOSU-
Stop giving my alma mater a bad name by attaching it to your name. Calling Savage’s drafts “abysmal” […] Two of Savage’s four first-round picks have been Pro Bowlers (Edwards and Thomas), we’re still waiting on Quinn, and he signed guys like Cribbs and Anderson off the streets who have also been Pro Bowlers for us. He even brought in Eric Steinbach, who should have been a Pro Bowler as well last year.
Sure, he didn’t have a draft to work with this season, but he used those assets to get a guy like Shaun Rogers, who has been the best defensive player the Browns have seen since their rebirth. It’s an absolute joke that you would make such a comical statement like that and then expect yourself to be taken seriously after that. I nearly choked on my Gatorade while reading that and simply didn’t bother what you had to say after that, because from that point on you might as well have been talking out of your *ss.
(Edited by WFNY: No need for midievil times, folks)
Amar- […] This is a sports site, […] Study the draft, not the first 3 picks of the draft (ie Thomas/Edwards……duh). Savage hitting on half of his picks…….give me a break. Who is this Randy moron? Talk about disgracing one’s alma mater. Ugh. Is that enough to lose commenting privileges around here?
(Edited by WFNY: Thanks, CF)
I love Savage’s e-mail. Not necessarily appropriate, but it’s football. It shows he has plenty of passion.
I also like the fan. A little mis-guided passion. A bit weaily to leak it, but just be prepared to get a little smack if you send some.
I think it’s a hilarious episode and everybody should laugh about it. Nothing more. I worked in sports and by this point in the year, a good front office employee has logged about 4-5 straight months of 60-hour weeks and you’re not thinking rationally. Lerner should tell Savage to take a day off and catch up on some sleep and move on. No big deal.
Cower will fail as coach/GM. So what if he properly manages the current roster if the talent level slowly starts degrading. The Steelers have a SYSTEM that consistently brings in talent (I think Savage is capable of doing this).
If Cower brings in talent evaluators who effectively act as GM then the above statement doesn’t apply (i.e. he wants to “be GM” so he’s the one picking the person who makes GM type decisions).
Ricky, I like the Marty idea. We just have to be prepared for when he loses a winnable playoff game do to poor clock mis-management. We’d be great in the regular season though.
Please, hire Cowher, clean house, and win some GD games. I am so sick of being the laughing stock of the NFL.
There is no such thing as a bust when the player is taken past the 4th round. Those picks are all based on potential, and if they don’t work out, no harm done. Especially Paul Hubbard, a 6th round pick from a year ago already a bust? how? I think it has been proven that top 3 picks are not no-brainers, especially in the case of Edwards when there have been a lot of busts from that draft. I also think you are too harsh in some of your critiques of players, like Pool and Jackson. So I suppose we won’t be able to agree if we have fundamental differences in who we think is a good player and what is a no-brainer (wasn’t that civil?). Plus he has brought in good players through trades and free agency
Swig – at this point, I would take disappointing playoff losses as opposed to disappointing seasons. I think he might be due for a big playoff win though, who knows
[…] this season that must be blamed on Savage. Most notably, the Kellen Winslow situation and the ridiculous email to a fan immediately following the Buffalo game were too much for Randy Lerner to take. I […]
