Southwest Division Preview
October 17, 2008West Needed “To Get My Thoughts Back Together”
October 17, 2008Per Cleveland Browns Media Relations:
Head coach ROMEO CRENNEL of the Cleveland Browns is the MOTOROLA NFL COACH OF THE WEEK for games played on October 12 – 13, the NFL announced today.
Romeo Crennel led the Browns to a 35-14 win over the undefeated Super Bowl champion New York Giants on Monday Night Football. Browns QB Derek Anderson threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns finding WR Braylon Edwards for 154 of those yards and one touchdown, while RB Jamal Lewis rushed for another touchdown and 88 yards. The Cleveland defense consistently pressured Giants QB Eli Manning leading to three picks by three different Browns defenders including a 94-yard interception return for a touchdown by CB Eric Wright.
Crennel was selected as Motorola NFL Coach of the Week from among three finalists by voters on NFL.com. The other finalists were head coaches JIM HASLETT of the St. Louis Rams and GARY KUBIAK of the Houston Texans.
Look. I’m as excited as anyone that the Browns won last weekend’s game. But aside from going for the two-point conversion late in the game to put us up by 21, please show me one thing that Crennel did to earn this honor. Judging by the others nominated, it was more of a “Hey, congrats on the big win” award.
If anything, the paragraph says it all by giving the praise to the players like D.A. and Eric Wright. Sure, it may be a “players win, coaches lose” frame of mind, but I refuse to roll out the red carpet for Romeo until he proves that he can consistently coach a game. But maybe that’s just me…

The decision to go for two, up by 19 with 8 minutes left in the game, was the wrong one.
So, yeah, Romeo coach of the week? Not so much.
Well, lets see here….he played prevent defense after Wright’s TD which allowed the Giants to get inside the Red Zone in something like 41 seconds with 4 or 5 minutes still left to play. I didn’t get that at all.
The team was still plagued by stupid mental penalties, which is always the sign of poor coaching.
Yep, definitely time for a new contract for Romeo.
Honest question here, is Tucker calling the D or is Crennel? I’m only asking because I don’t have the answer. If it is RAC, then he should be chastised.
i dont think this is something worth making a stink about. frankly, making light of this is being critical for the sake of being critical. the bottom line is he got a huge win on monday night football against the defending super bowl champs. all of the analysts (except Steve Young!) had this game over before kickoff. a few of his calls were questionable and the penalties made me pull my hair out, but he STILL got a HUGE win. they completely blew out the Giants – and to be honest, the score could have been 35-7. the giants never should have gotten that second TD (browns forced a fumble) but a stupid secondary penalty gave them the ball back first and goal. let him get his award and lets all move on. its not a big deal. by next week, nobody will even remember who was coach of the week.
tim @ #4: I don’t think anyone would dispute that this was a huge win.
But I’m willing to make a stink* about it simply because the team won *despite* the coaching, not because of it; and this sure seems like it’s exactly the kind of thing that will be brought up come contract-extension time. Which carries more weight, “ten procedure penalties and repeated strategically-incorrect playcalling in the most easily-scripted situations in the game” or “huge win over undefeated defending Super Bowl champs on national TV”? Which *should* carry more weight?
* Er, my “making a stink about it” is currently limited to commenting here and bitching to the rest of my family. I’m gonna change the world, that way 😛 🙂
Romeo’s a great guy, but seriously, name me one game in his time here that you can say, “Romeo Crennel is the reason we won that game.”
I say add on a few more years, just to increase the odds that there might be a game we can say that about one day.
fair enough, tapin. however, how long does Romeo’s current contract last? 2001 i believe. so assuming Rac plays out the rest of his contract and is then a candidate for an extension, i highly doubt that the decision will be made at that point based on a coach of the week award from week 6 of 2008.
anyways – go browns! i dont care if they win because of rac, or despite rac, as long as they win!
I agree with Tim on this one. This award is a nice gesture albeit insignificant and unimportant and has now turned into an excuse to take a cheap jab at romeo. No one is asking for anyone to roll out the red carpet as a result of romeo winning this award and last time I checked, the award was for the coach of the week, not the coach of the last several weeks or coach of the first half of the season. The Browns won a big game on monday night against a solid oppenent, do we really need to complain about anything that goes along with that?
I feel like a lot of the credit should go to Chud for the Offensive game plan.
In fact (brace yourselves for a conspiricy theory)…I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Crennel called the game plan the first few weeks of the season, and finally gave it to Chud after the Cincy game…they looked like 2 different teams.
Don’t tell me that Tucker and Stallworth made THAT much difference. Esp with no K2.
Chud for president. 🙂
oops – i meant 2011 (not 2001) ha.
and quite frankly, rac gets ALOT of abuse when things dont go right (like anderson stinking, even though the O-line stopped blocking for the first few games, jamal seemed to be running in sand and braylon kept dropping passes) even though you cant really blame rac for that. yeah, maybe they won because of Chud’s great play calling and tucker’s smart and opportunistic defensive plans moreso than Rac being the head coach, but give him his award and lets not make more of it than it is. an automatic contract extension doesnt come with the award, nor is there a salary kicker. lets just hope for a repeat performance against the ‘skins.
He still sucks….Fire Him NOW!!!
tim #7: “anyways – go browns! i dont care if they win because of rac, or despite rac, as long as they win!”
…and on this we’re in complete agreement. Go Browns!
I think it’s just wonderful that one win has made some fans completely forget just how terrible a coach this guy is. Same fans who are now penciling the team in for 11 wins and a spot in the AFC title game (I wish I were kidding, but they are out there). One week does not a season (or a coach) make.
Lol browns fans are funny. Does he deserve a contract? no. Is he a good coach? Nope. Thing is ya’ll morons was talking all week how ya’ll ain’t wanna get humiliated on national tv. If ya’ll ever played sports and been coached then ya’ll would know mental errors like false starts is not the coaches fault Lmao. How bout the offensive lineman just forgot the snap count? Thats the coaches fault how? Oh yea coaches are therapist thats right. How bout looking at it like damn they had all those penalties and they still got first downs? Thats toughness right? Blame him for all the wrong stuff but give him no credit for the right stuff. Oh yea you don’t criticize for a coach going for 2 and making it you idiots… its vice versa. Done ranting! Have a nice day. Go buckeye’s and cavaliers
Two words: Clock Management.
i still say fire the bum….and get the chin…
Yea he terrible at clock management but thats on chud just as much as romeo. The losing by td’s and kicking field goals is terrible too. Just give him credit for winning a game ya’ll was supposed to get smoked in.
