Romeo Captions, Part II

September 17, 2008You asked for it, you got it. We’re going to be seeing a lot more of Ohio State Freshman QB Terrelle Pryor this Saturday when the Bucks take on the Trojans again….the Troy Trojans, that is. After watching Senior Captain and starting QB Todd Boeckman struggle mightily in a big game once again this past weekend, this was a move many fans were hoping for, citing Pryor’s ability to force the defense to hesitate a little more in anticipation of his mobility and athleticism.
There may be more, too. After initially implying that Boeckman would be the starter for sure on Saturday, Jim Tressel has now softened his stance a bit. Tim May of the Columbus Dispatch has the story, writing,
“In the wake of a lopsided loss at Southern California, Ohio State is going to make some adjustments, coach Jim Tressel said today, and two of those will be more playing time for freshman quarterback Terrelle Pryor and less for senior Todd Boeckman.
In fact, when asked at his press luncheon today whether the starting job for Saturday’s game with Troy is up for grabs, Tressel couched his answer. That’s because he said he and the coaches sort of couched it as they discussed an “if the game were tonight” scenario late Monday night.
“We came to the consensus that if the game were last night, we would probably have Todd and Terrelle playing about 50-50 in the game,” Tressel said.
Who would start would be based more on situation than seniority, he indicated, and that could change these next two days of serious practice.”
The writing is on the wall, so to speak. Tressel has begun the transitioning of this team into Pryor’s hands. Before long, this program will be Pryor’s to lead, and so Saturday will be yet another chance to get an even better look at Pryor and his abilities.
It would be a shame to see more Pryor, but only on running plays. We already know that Pryor is a premiere athlete. What we don’t yet know is how he can do throwing the ball downfield and leading scoring drives. He has excelled for the most part in an alternating role with Boeckman on designed QB draws and Option Read plays, but ideally Saturday we will get our first glimpse into where Pryor is at with his throwing ability.

Good, I am going to the game.
about half of a game overdue, but I’ll take it
barring a career-ending injury, this is win/win.
Jeezus look at that picture. That’s what I looked like my Freshman year too.
Praise the Lord. This is a no-brainer. The faster Pryor becomes acquainted with the QB position at the college level, the better. I still think we win the BigTen even if he has some growing pains.
Giving Pryor some reps is a good idea – but how long will he stay in collegiate football? Something tells me he won’t be obtaining his degree from Thee Ohio State University.
