The Browns Will Win If…
September 19, 2008Even the Government Hates the Yankees
September 19, 2008After the beating that the Buckeyes took at the hands of the USC Trojans, many fans started looking for answers. Some blame was put on quarterback Todd Boeckman, some was put on the defense. But there was a select few that turned to the men on the sidelines, as there was undoubtedly some questionable moves in terms of substitutions as well as play-calling.
Earlier this week, we found out that fans will undoubtedly see more Terrell Pryor in the upcoming game. But those that are looking for some alterations to the coaching staff will have to wait a little while longer as Jim Tressel refuses to relinquish what plays his team runs and when they run them.
Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis surrendered his play-calling duties this season. OSU head coach Jim Tressel can’t envision himself following suit.
“I don’t know, maybe my ego wouldn’t let me,” Tressel said Thursday. “Or maybe I’m a workaholic. I couldn’t read comic books all day. I’ve got to go watch film.”
Since Tressel had just finished explaining how he seldom tells the defensive coaches what to do or what to change, he figured without his play calling, he’d be a man without a purpose.
“I’m not sure I could not help on either side of the ball,” Tressel said. “What am I going to do, go eat bonbons?”
Tressel, who has a solid background when it comes to offense, may be missing the boat a bit here. I don’t think anyone is asking him to be 100 percent hands-off when it comes to calling plays, but it would not hurt to have an offensive specialist of sorts to help make adjustments throughout the game. The “bon-bon” line is a bit much, but could be something that may actually entice the abovementioned Weis. Of course, it could also be the fans that are missing the boat given the history of the Buckeyes – save those three, huge losses. One cannot help but overreact in times of desperation, so I get that.
The issue is that it is incredibly tough for anyone to look past those losses, let alone the fans of a team that continues to get decimated through the media due to their inability to win big games. Whether it is in poor play-calling, a lack of competition to prepare for big games, or simply being an inferior team, one thing remains unchanged: Tressel will continue to be the man going forward. Like it or not.

I still personally feel like Jim Tressel is the least of OSU’s problems. Bollman needs to just focus on the OL and a new OC is needed.
Oh, I completely agree. Though some of those option plays with TB in there were just silly…
Ugh, tell me about it. FWIW, people in the know say that Bollman calls the plays down to Tressel, and the only time Tressel calls a play is when he vetoes Bollman’s play. Now, I agree that Tressel should have vetoed those option plays, and it’s even worse if those WERE Tressel’s overriding plays…but I have never been a fan of Bollman as OC, and that’s where the majority of these plays originate.
I mean this in the most non-inflammatory way: how long until this becomes a Crennell/Mo Carthon-type situation? I’m just trying gauge how big of a problem you feel this is…
I don’t feel that this is that big a problem. We’ve seen Tress adapt to his players when we went to that psuedo spread when Troy Smith became the man. If that happens soon w/ Pryor, then our offensive woes should be reduced. Give the speedy receivers we bring in a chance to use their speed. the way to do that is spreading the field, not WR screens w/ no blockng.
any play involving the words Boeckman and Run should be burned.
A lot of good it did Weis to give up the play calling. If that is the comparison I would rather Tressell keep on keepin on. Tressell was a qb in his younger day so he knows something about offense. That is why you very seldom see the bucks have time management problems.
He is just fine. He will show one and all that he can adjust just fine to most situations. Watch how he changes the offense alla Troy Smith to compensate for the emergence of Terrelle Pryor.
It will be interesting to see if our WR look better with Pryor than they do with Boeckman throwing the rock. They have looked average at best in the brightest of lights.
