September 29, 2008Cleveland Indians 2008 Recap Part 1 – A Tale of Two Seasons
September 29, 2008First of all, if you missed Rock’s amazing recap, make sure you go read it. He lays out percectly what most of us were thinking during the Browns game yesterday vs. Cincinnati. That being said, and while trying not to trod on the exact same ground as Rock, I will give you my notes from yesterday’s Browns game.
- Did it seem to anyone else that Marvin Lewis was looking to out-badly-coach Romeo all day long? The use of time outs in the second half was particularly atrocious. Also, I was baffled that he would use his replay so early in the second half on a simple first down pass to Steptoe for 17 yards that took the Browns to the Cincy 31 yard line. I am glad that Marvin Lewis did this and Romeo Crennel did not.
- Braylon Edwards’ air guitar hero celebration gave me chills… in a really bad way. Up until this touchdown, Braylon had spent the previous 3.75 games dropping passes, committing penalties, fighting with his QB and pretty much doing everything he could to keep himself out of the end zone. Apparently he was also planning his celebration no matter how long it took him to get it. It is embarrassing to watch a guy who is supposed to be a pro-bowl caliber player celebrate his first touchdown toward the END OF THE FOURTH GAME OF THE SEASON.
- Josh Cribbs is a man. I know he got whistled for a motion penalty on the first play when he was blocking for a run outside the tackles. That being said, I loved watching him commit to these plays. Cribbs was a man on a mission and he wanted to take out the entire defenisve line so his runner could gain yardage. On one of the plays I am pretty sure he knocked two guys who then road-blocked a couple more guys on the Cincy d-line.
- They weren’t always successful, but Chud and the Browns did well to get Jerome Harrison involved in yesterday’s game. Running the reverse a second time might have been ill-advised, but I will take it. Harrison finished the game with four rushes for 20 yards and one catch for 5 yards. Those aren’t mind-boggling accomplishments, but those touches will pay off if they stay consistent over the course of the season. Also keep in mind Harrison’s one big opportunity for a screen was overthrown and hit the turf.
- I know Kellen Winslow is a star and all, but did this team forget about the soft hands of Steve Heiden? Heiden used to be a valuable outlet in space for Cleveland QB’s.
- Rock pointed it out earlier, but I will highlight it again. Kamerion Wimbley’s “sack” was the “excuse me” variety. Brett Favre laying down for Michael Strahan thought that looked weak.
- I thought Harvard kids were supposed to be smart. Did anyone notice that one time when the Browns brought some pressure from the secondary that Ryan Fitzpatrick turned around, made eye contact with his lone running back in the backfield and then pointed to the CB blitzer? Umm, Ryan, if your lone setback is going to pick up the blitz, I think everyone on the field will know that this is a passing play. Here’s a thought. Don’t do that.
- What else can you say about the progression of Alex Hall? This is the kind of luck in the draft that other teams seem to have, but the Browns don’t. Let’s hope his personal coach Willie McGinest can set this kid up to be an impact defensive player for a long time.
That’s all for now folks. Let’s hope, for all our sake, that a different team shows up after the bye week. At this point, I don’t even know what to root for. I know that I want wholesale changes on the coaching staff as an eventuality. Still, I am not sure that I want this thing blown up during the bye week. As I said in the podcast last week, I think I have been talked into not making a change mid-season from a coaching standpoint unless the Browns think they have an internal candidate. At this point in the season, I would be surprised if Phil Savage and company think they have an internal head coaching candidate.
So, we will see what team shows up after the bye. It isn’t likely, but maybe it is a healthy, focused version of the Browns that played so well last season. Maybe it will be a tail of two seasons and the Browns can rip off a big-time winning streak. You can’t predict anything like that, but that’s all we can hope for at this point.

He must have great feet too, because DA’s pass to him on that fourth down was about a three-hopper…
Just FYI, I lined up in the neutral zone to read this column.
i punched a defending CB in the chest and wouldn’t apologize for it before I read this column. Then I threw a few balls at the ground.
I printed it out and then dropped it on the way back to my office
I tried to read this post in less than two minutes but failed despite my two timeouts.
I was nervous about writing this post due to all the unnecessary distractions of the press suggesting someone else should have written it due to my awful performance last week. I now feel vindicated, though.
I would have read this article but I strained my quad waming up before clicking the link.
I’m thinking Arby’s.
My buddy and I placed a little bet to see if we could both finish this article within 2 minutes. He would read first, then me. Well, he was close to finishing the article with about 50 seconds left and I had to chance to stop the clock (see we were given these things called time outs). Instead of stopping the clock, I let him drag the article out until about 20 seconds were left….just as he was about to finish the article I cleverly used a time out in an attempt to ‘ice’ him from finishing the article. To my utter surprise he was able to finish the article anyway. No big deal though, I still had 20 seconds to finish this thing. Well apparently, and to my complete befuddlement, you can’t finish an entire article in 20 seconds. I found myself with 5 seconds left and about 50% of the article to finish, needless to say, my buddy won. Where did all that time go?
Craig, I feel terribly for apparently having hijacked the comments for your post!
Does Wimbley do anything better than Hall at this point?
He gets paid better…
Here’s to hoping Hall is out there for the rest of the year. When is Peek coming back? Can we run Peek and Hall on the outside with Wimbley moving to ILB? I think his skill set is better suited to the inside
Peek’s out for the year.
I tried to read this article but got hit in the eye with a penalty flag through my helmet visor and lost my vision.
unrelated, but i like how you guys use the brownie for the team’s logo on the gameday matchup instead of the plain orange helmet.
Reading this article made me realize that it gave us our swagger back.
I read this article and then a completely rehearsed and embarrassing celebration
Mt dream linebacker situation will have to wait for next year
After reading this article I played Stairway to Heaven on my air guitar. The extended version. Twice. In leather chaps.
