Cavs/Celts, Game 1: O-H…
May 7, 2008The Pending Joe Borowski Return
May 7, 2008While Mike continues to pound out excellent work regarding the recently drafted Browns players, The Sons of Nev have a pretty intriguing piece regarding Austin Scott – one of the seven players added post-draft.
Scott, a son of the Big Ten, is one of the more-heralded running backs in recent Pennsylvania history, but as SoN discusses, he never really had the chance to shine.
Austin Scott is a Penn State graduate and was not drafted because he did not play the majority of his senior season for the Nittany Lions. He was dismissed from the team once he was charged with rape. This accusation effectively ruined his college football career, to say nothing of what it did to his reputation. Upon his arrival at PSU, Scott was one of the best running backs in Pennsylvania High School history, but never really had an opportunity to shine for the Blue and White, partially because of his performance, partially because all things being equal, Joe Paterno gives the playing time to the upperclassmen.
Thankfully, for Scott, all charges against the back were excused this past April. I have no insight that I can offer to this kids talents as I have never seen him play. But given what Sons of Nev has to say, I can’t help buy be intrigued about his future. He’s likely to be very grateful to be given this chance – let’s just hope he capitalizes on the opportunity.
Player I’m rooting for: Austin Scott [Sons of Nev]

Wouldn’t it be nice for once that the Browns get a diamond in the rough?
Josh Cribbs would like to have a word with you…
We chatted and he forgave me…
Doesn’t this sound a whole lot like Eric Wright? And we know how THAT turned out. Would love to have lightning strike twice.
Wouldnt Derek Anderson be a diamond in the rough too? I mean, he didnt make the Ravens team, what two-three years ago? Whether you like him or want Brady now, he has turned out to be a decent QB (that will potentially be great trade bait in the future).
In the 2006 Orange Bowl vs. Florida State Austin Scott, then a junior, got the bulk of the playing time after Tony Hunt got hurt. All he did was rush for 110 yards on 26 carries and score 2 touchdowns. When the 2006 season came around he got hurt and redshirted so he could come back as the #1 running back in 2007 as Tony Hunt was still at PSU. (Hunt was drafted by the Eagles in round 3 of the April, 2007 draft). Scott came back as the starter in 2007 and carried the ball 62 times for 302 yards and 6 touchdowns. The knock against him was that he had trouble hanging on to the football. Then his troubles began when he was charged with rape by a girl who had a history of doing the same thing previously. Charges were ultimately dismissed less than 2 weeks prior to the 2008 NFL Draft. Had he been able to complete his senior year I think he would have been a mid to late round draft pick. You can see some high school highlights of him on youtube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNobAmEkTh8
The game was the AAAA state championship and Austin’s school was going up against the #3 rated school in the country as rated by USA Today. That school was only giving up 67 rushing yards a game. Austin scored a touchdown on a 63 yard run on the very first play of the game. He ended the game with over 250 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns. At Penn State he never quite lived up to the hype, but the potential is still there and now he has something to prove.
