Perhaps It’s Only Appropriate…

May 6, 2008While it’s a fairly slow Cleveland sports morning with the Cavs and Tribe both having last night off, I thought it would be worth while mentioning a rather unfortunate occurrence of an athlete getting robbed in Chicago – especially since we’ll likely be seeing an awful lot of him over the next few years.
Rashard Mendenhall, whom most of you may know as the guy that the Ohio State Buckeyes simply couldn’t stop during their only regular season loss this past year was recently drafted in the first round by the Pittsburgh Steelers to run along side Willie Parker. The Chicago Sun-Times has the details of the attack which occurred at 2 a.m. on Chicago’s south side.
Thankfully, Mendenhall was not harmed, aside from losing his phone and a few dollars.
“It was obviously a scary moment,” said his agent, Mike McCartney of Priority Sports. “But he is fine. He is doing great. He said he doesn’t have anything that is worth his life.”
I’m not sure about you, but it seems to me like Chicago isn’t exactly the safest place for athletes – regardless of the time of the Mendenhall attack.
It wasn’t all to long ago that the Bulls’ Eddy Curry was robbed at gunpoint in his Chicago home. And this incident was only about two weeks after Antoine Walker was robbed in his Chicago-area home, also by gunpoint. While this likely won’t be the last time we hear of an athlete getting in any sort of altercation like this, the fact that these three have occured in Chicago, all within 12 months of each other, may speak volumes for the area.

What’s the big deal? Larry Hughes robbed the Cavaliers for two and a half years.
And was shipped to Chicago. Coincidence? I think not…
CC Sabathia was robbed at gunpoint by former Buckeye Damon Stringer. I love that story.
yeah that Damon Stringer/CC story is a favorite of my brother and i, and its especially awesome to act out.
“Hey you’re CC Sabathia.”
“Yeah.”
“I used to play high school basketball…Nice watch.”
“Thanks.”
“GIVE ME THE WATCH”
Hahaha, hilarious buu. Perhaps WFNY should produce a broadway production out of this.
“Yeah, I’m going to the theater this weekend to check out that new play, ‘Give Me The Watch.'”
I have a friend on the Chicago PD. They tell me it’s sheer craziness there in the ranks of the PD. The new chief is firing officers that were suspended for any reason (wether they were cleared or not) over the last 10-15 years. The cops aren’t sure if they have a job when they show up for work, and aren’t sure that, if they do anything that can be twisted to seem outside the rules, they will have a job to come to the next day.
Stay away from Chicago for awhile…
