DeShawn Stevenson: More “Hey, Look At Me!”
April 30, 2008A Friendly Chat with….Dan Steinberg
April 30, 2008Commentor (and tipster) extraordinaire MoBot was kind enough to pass along SI.com’s fan survey regarding MLB ballparks. Though the Tribe is a miserable 6-9 so far at home, fans will be glad to see that
All stadia were ranked on the following items:
– Affordability
– Food
– Team Quality
– Tradition
– Atmosphere
– Fan IQ
– Hospitality
– Promotions
– Traffic
– Neighborhood
So, it appears that all of those Travis Hafner promotions that we haven’t appreciated are actually helping us out. Actually, it’s likely the fact that the Indians have fireworks following every Friday night game, giveaways on Saturdays, and the ever popular Family Fun Day on Sundays.
Clicking here takes you to the actual breakdown of Progressive Field. I’m not shocked to see a 19 in terms of a fan hospitality. Cleveland fans simply do not like opposing fans in their venues – like it or not. Also, I’m not surprised that one of the comments inherent to the hospitality question was:
“Just a touch of ‘You Suck’ chants. It’s nowhere near as violent as a Browns game.“
Browns Stadium? Rough? You don’t say…
Other items that seemed to have benefit the Tribe/Progressive Field in this survey are the number of restaurants and bars located within walking distance. Remind me never to go to a Marlins game as there don’t appear to be many places in Florida. This is a big deal for many fans who like to spend more than the few hours of the game actually downtown – and it’s great for the city.
Walk past E. 9th’s Panini’s within a few hours of game time and you’ll find plenty of fans willing to have a few with you. (Even if you’re wearing a suit because you left work early. Not that I’d know from experience or anything…)

Just remember, Scott, since we wear suits to Panini’s, we’ll be able to afford those eventual World Series tickets.

I can see this ranking. I was at a Braves game last year on a trip and trust me, there is nowhere you want to walk to before a game. Tribe fans have it made in that regard for pregame drinks.
The stadium improvements made over the past few years have gone a long way as well. That’s a very underrated aspect of the Dolan regime.
I’m actually a huge fan of PNC’s set-up. The only knock against them has to be the actual game itself. That main strip behind the stadium is pretty cool – especially when it’s blocked off for day games and there’s a ton of foot traffic. Outback in the outfield is a pretty fun experience. Plus, the way the bleachers are right on the field adds to it.
just for some added support, Pittsburgh’s player voted “most worth paying to watch” was Freddy Sanchez. Jack Wilson was actually an option as well…
Of all the ballparks I’ve been to, the Jake is the best. (Yankee, Riverfront, SkyDome, Shea)
I agree with you Scott, there’s no place like home! Even when our tribe has problems on the field, there’s always “the drummer”, John Adams to pick you up with the beat of his drum, the sound we know as home. Every year there’s something new added, and you sure can’t top the brown mustard hot dogs anywhere else…. The added memory plaques behind the outfield are an awesome way to ‘relive’ some experiences we’ve known. Yeah, I love our ball park no matter what it is called.
