April 10, 2008If your television ever tunes in to ESPN, even if you merely scurry past it on occasion, you no doubt were subjected to the Who’s Now fiasco. Now, the self-proclaimed World Wide Leader in Sports has a new gimmick, er contest called TitleTown USA. The idea is that fans will write an essay, or submit a video detailing why their burgh should be considered Title Town. Now, it’s funny because growing up Green Bay owned the name Title Town without anyone really disputing it. They earned the name for the Lombardi Packers, and the name stuck even after they stopped winning titles. Seems kind of unfair that ESPN decided to put the name up for auction. So the WWL is going to milk this through the summer, as they ‘make stops’ at the 20 locations determined to have a stake in the name. Count on seeing these pieces 100 times each on SportsCenter.
This bothers me for a couple of reasons. First, like I said earlier I don’t think ESPN had the right to take Green Bay’s nickname away. Seriously. What if the US Department of Agriculture decided to have a tournament of all the apple growing locations for the nickname The Big Apple? It’s ridiculous. Second, because cities like Cleveland will get nominated. Don’t get me wrong, I think we do have some of the best fans in the world, but we haven’t won ANYTHING for over 50 years. In fact, we just had an argument over which town is more tortured, Cleveland or Philly! But because they are including 20 cities, you know that Cleveland, Philadelphia or Buffalo will make the list, even though they have no legit claim on that kind of title. Seriously, how many cities could even suggest that they should get the name away from Green Bay? Maybe 6?
The worst part though, is this burning in the pit of my stomach nausea knowing that Boston will either be first or second. I think I just puked a little in my mouth. My guess is second, and New York will be first of course. Go figure. ESPN finds another way to make us watch New York vs Boston.

Green Bay may be Title Town, but Detroit will always be Hockeytown, USA.
If you include college, Los Angeles has to be Title Town. USC football, UCLA basketball, the Angels just got a World Series title, and then there’s always the Lakers.
LA has the college aspect for certain, but no NFL will eventually kill any chances they have of winning. Plus, they are no where near Bristol.
It will be 1. NY 2. Boston 3. LA. 4. Denver or Dallas
