After an incredible 20-point comeback to beat Michigan and start Big Ten play 2-0, the Ohio State Buckeyes carried that momentum into the rest of the week to go a perfect 2-0 on the hardwood this past week. Their dominate win over William and Mary allowed head coach Chris Holtmann to clear his bench.
Much like this past week, Ohio State’s season will be filled with plenty of ups and downs. For the Buckeyes, it was most apparent after they blew yet another double-digit second-half Wisconsin and then followed that up by dominating Wisconsin just three days later.
After starting the season 4-0 against four cupcakes, Ohio State went just 1-2 in Portland in the inaugural PK80 Invitational. At times, the Buckeyes showed plenty of promise, but against teams like Gonzaga, it was obvious that Ohio State still has plenty to work and both in terms of on-court performance and on the recruiting trail. Then again, Chris Holtmann and his staff will only make the team better as time goes on.
It’s been against weak competition, but 4-0 has to mean something, right? While Ohio State has dominated their way through the first four games of the season, they will face much better competition this week. Holtmann’s Buckeyes will face their first ranked team of the season in Gonzaga Thanksgiving night.
Even though it was against two opponents that Ohio State should have easily beaten, getting the first-game jitters out of the way for both the new coaching staff and seven newcomers was important for the Buckeyes. Ohio State began a perfect 2-0 during the first weekend of college basketball after beating Robert Morris and Radford.
Just hours after athletic director Gene Smith gave head coach Thad Matta a vote of confidence by stating that he believes in the coaching staff and will keep them around for another season, Matta’s Buckeyes lost, 66-57, to Rutgers, the worst team in the Big Ten, in the opening round of the conference tournament.
