MLB Trade Rumors: Indians on Verge of Trading Drew Pomeranz, Alex White for Ubaldo Jimenez
July 30, 2011MLB Trade News: Indians Reportedly Trade Orlando Cabrera to Giants
July 30, 2011The Cleveland Indians have reportedly traded prospects Drew Pomeranz, Alex White, Joe Gardner and Matt McBride to the Colorado Rockies. In return, the Tribe will receive right-handed starting pitcher Ubaldo Jiménez.
The Indians had been in the Jiménez
hunt for the majority of the last week, though the price they would pay was not established. It had been reported earlier this week that Pomeranz and White were considered to be “untouchable,” but this appears to no longer be the case. White and Pomeranz represent two first-round draft selections for whom the Indians lost an awful lot of games to acquire.
It appears that the “What If” campaign will continue into the fall as the Indians front office is going for the postseason starting immediately. For the last few seasons, the Indians were the team shipping off ace starting pitchers for prospects. Now, it appears the tables have been turned. Jiménez will be under club control through 2013. Heading into the weekend, Jiménez, 27,
was sporting a record of 6-9 with an ERA of 4.20, but has been exponentially more successful away from Coors Field. Conversely, he’s also been the subject of health-related rumors after losing three miles per hour on his fastball.
For logistic reasons, Pomeranz will have to be a “player to be named later” due to not being under contract for at least one season. The original deal included only Pomeranz, White and McBride, but it looks like the Rockies held out to have included as well, going as far as to having Jiménez pitch despite the Indians pulling their prospects from the field of play. Judging from the sound of several MLB scribes, the team still does not appear to be done acquiring talent. WFNY will certainly have more on this throughout the next several days.
Update: The Indians want to make it clear that the deal is contingent on a physical examination by Cleveland Indians medical personnel.
