November 29, 2010While We’re Waiting… Ticket Deals, Jake’s Performance and Big Ten Awards
November 30, 2010After throwing a pass that forced ESPN play-by-play man Mike Tirico to say “Oh my goodness,” Anderson was caught smiling on the sidelines with teammates. The following was what ensued in the postgame press conference.

On the season, Anderson has completed 52.8 percent of his passes for seven touchdowns and nine interceptions. He has a passer rating of 68.2 and his Arizona Cardinals were essentially eliminated from playoff contention on Monday night despite their division leader being under .500.

I hope they’re still making those Coors Light interview room commercials when DA retires… by which I mean next season.
yeah they showed this in the middle of Sportscenter last night after the game and they thought DA was out of line. As little as I think of him as a QB (Team BradyQuinn!), I thought the reporter was being kind of a jerk in pressing him. I never knew it was a rule that only the team in the lead was allowed to smile when talking to a teammate. It’s not like DA was goofing around, walking up and down the sidelines acting like he didn’t care. There’s no way of knowing the context of that convo, and I assume the lineman was just trying to lighten up a tense situation so DA could relax and go out there and be his best DA self.
It’s not fair but pro athletes should know this by now. The fans want you to care (or at least appear to care) as much as they do AND everything is now on camera.
yea that reporter was an ass. obviously the smile was out of context.
Gotta feel at least a little bad for the guy. He really wants to be a great QB and just isn’t. The worst part is that he had 1 dream season that somehow convined him and at least a few other people that it is possible again.
I agree, I feel kinda bad for the guy here, and the fact that his coach basically told the entire media that he couldn’t cut it as an NFL QB before the game (how do you think that makes Max Hall feel?).
On second thought, I don’t feel all that bad….the entire night they were referring to him as a Pro Bowl QB….that’s just funny
“What were you laughing about?”
“Something unrelated, none of your business.”
He could have been more diplomatic, but I see nothing wrong with that answer. Reporter was being a d-bag.
If a team signed me to 6.5 million and I played like he does, I’d be laughing too.
Very sad. Everyone should be allowed to smile, especially when you’re having a bad day.
I actually feel sorry for him for the first time
This is only awesome b/c of how much I dislike Derek Anderson. Otherwise, this is something for which I would completely hate on whoever that report was.
I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t smile when I saw that only Akili Smith had a worse passer rating after 1000 attempts.
Don’t feel sorry for him at all. Self-control is Post-Game Interview 101. This is just classic DA, football’s Nuke Laloosh, a million dollar arm and a ten cent head.
“D-bag reporters” are a given but he was ornery with slavish Cleveland writers when asked about lousy play. He looks and sounds just like a spoiled 12 year old brat storming out of the kitchen after having his wii taken away,
Come on, Scott, this is a long way from being a “meltdown,” let alone an “epic” meltdown.
So DA chews out some dipwad reporter and walks out. That was pretty tame.
i thought the joking on the sideline was inappropriate too. hey derek, you’re getting your ass handed to you on national tv. your performance is awful. what the hell is so funny? to anyone watching it said, ‘i’m getting paid, i don’t care if we win or lose.’
and then when asked about it, a reasonable question asked in the proper forum, he reacted like a child who knew he’d done something wrong.
i’m with harv. we’ve seen this act before with him. hell, if i recall, he also downplayed/minimized the cincy game. that’s when he lost me and probably most browns fans. if he doesn’t consider missing the playoffs important, then what does he think is important.
no pride in his craft.
I won’t soon forget that DA told us we didn’t deserve a winner because people were cheering when BQ came on after his injury. I don’t feel sorry for the guy at all…I doubt he studies as much as he says…I doubt he works as hard as he is claiming. If this guy wanted to be a better QB they wouldn’t be able to do a whole piece on how he stares down every receiver he is going to throw to, or how his completion % is among the worst ever.
DA was just salty because he got booed every single 3 and out by those fans who FULLY HAD THE RIGHT TO. Some reporter called him out on acting silly on the sideline when he could be looking at coverages or doing something productive. This guy doesn’t have the drive or heart to be a QB in the NFL and shouldn’t pout when people call him out for it. You want better questions? PLAY BETTER IDIOT.
“Come on, Scott, this is a long way from being a “meltdown,” let alone an “epic” meltdown.”
You may want to direct this to the hordes of people searching for “Derek Anderson meltdown” this morning.
Guy played like garbage after we signed him to a contract and then said we didn’t deserve a winner.
Dealing with the media is something every player in every sport deals with and you get stupid questions every now and then.
It’s the ones that handle the questions with maturity that don’t get a video up on youtube having a meltdown. Here’s a concept: “No comment. Next question, please.”
It’s their job to poke and prod. It’s your job to throw touchdown passes. Only one is doing their job here.
@16 re: 13,
ZING!!!
I’m mostly happy because after the way he’s been playing I can probably stop worrying about him coming back to Cleveland and rolling the Browns like he said he would. I will sleep much better now.
Dear Hordes of People Searching for “Derek Anderson Meltdown” This Morning,
I didn’t say it wasn’t interesting. I just said it wasn’t a meltdown. It’s just a guy getting mad, telling off somebody, and walking out. This very same thing happens millions of times a day in the real world.
Sheesh, it’s not necessary to go all Channel 43 over this. A little perspective please.
I honestly can’t decide who’s my least favorite player in the NFL. It’s tough between the stillers d-bags (Harrison/7) and the former Browns who are absolute nincompoops (this guy and old Stone Hands). This makes me happy because we are no longer paying millions of dollars to a spoiled child with no brain who just so happens to have a really strong arm.
For many years, I was a news/sports photographer at TV stations in Ohio, Oklahoma, Minnesota, and Colorado, and covered my share of big time sporting events. The questioner was entirely out of line. It was a legitimate question, but to be asked over and over was unprofessional and uncalled for. I would not have blamed DA for slugging the jerk.
[…] Anderson’s rant is forever captured in the Internet consciousness. If you forgot what Derek Anderson’s meltdown was all about, well here it is… […]
