The Cabrera Injury: What Now?
May 18, 2010Da Clip Show: Keeping an Eye on the Tribe’s AAA Squad – 5/18/10 – “The Big Smooth” Edition
May 18, 2010As a website, we decided pretty quickly and decisively that we weren’t going to report on a specific rumor that came to our mailbox well before it started finding its way onto the hottest topics at Twitter. We did so because frankly, we didn’t believe the rumor. Additionally its subject didn’t fit the standards of this site. Now, LeBron James and Gloria James’ lawyer Fred Nance has written a cease and desist letter to a certain website that did not use the same editorial policies that we have employed here. We are not looking to pat ourselves on the back. We didn’t do anything special in not reporting this. Now that there is a cease and desist letter (obtained by TMZ.com) we feel we can report the contents of that letter without diving into the ugly rumor itself.
From “Nance, Frederick R.”
Subject “GLORIA JAMES”
“Mr. Owens. I am the attorney for Gloria and LeBron James. I am writing to demand that you Cease and Desist in repeating the lies you have been instrumental in spreading regarding Gloria James. They are categorically false and per se defamatory. If you do not understand the legal significance of those facts, I strongly urge you to consult your legal counsel.”
“At first blush, your irresponsible speculation about what might have contributed to the Cavaliers performance in the Boston series was so idiotic and “off the wall” that we did not think that it even warranted a denial. No thinking person could possibly believe such rubbish. But you have persisted in repeating this nonsense, attributing it to an unidentified source all for your own personal gain. We demand that you immediately stop publishing or in any way repeating these false, despicable and per se defamatory statements.”

Just for the record, this isn’t the first or last thing that we will refuse to report on. It has probably gone unstated anywhere on the website before, but we also won’t engage in tearing down athletes for their social lives. We have had plenty of tips sent to us about parties and bars. Every now and then it becomes noteworthy like when Eric Wright crashed his car after the Jay-Z concert, but even there, the fact that he was at the concert wasn’t news. The car crash was. Sometimes it is a difficult line to draw, but we will continue to make judgments along the way as we see fit.
If you ever wonder why we haven’t reported on something you are always free to email us at the tips email address.
