MLB News: Indians Interview Manny Acta
October 15, 2009While We’re Waiting… Indians/Red Sox ALCS, Big Ten Title Talk, and BDL’s Cavs Preview
October 16, 2009According to the Dayton Daily News, the Miami Dolphins are interested in acquiring Josh Cribbs from the Cleveland Football Browns. Although there’s no real details to the discussion, it wouldn’t be shocking if Cribbs and his agent would push for a trade. It’s widely been discussed that Cribbs wants a new contract. It’s also true that players have forced their way into trades away from the Browns in order to make more money.
Florio at PFT is floating the idea of Cribbs for Ted Ginn, Jr. No idea how this gets thrown into the mix, but it may make sense for the Dolphins to try and unload at least one receiver to make room for Cribbs.
Is there anything do this? We’ll have to see, but combined with all the Brady Quinn drama it seems the next 5 days before the deadline will be “fun”.

We will be mentioned in many trade scenarios
None of them will happen … this is the NFL, not the MLB
One word – no.
jesus. just give the guy a contract!!

Browns QB Brady Quinn for Titans QB Vince Young
“Whaaaaa? Yeah, you heard me right. This would be much more than trading one guy who likes to go shirtless when he parties for another guy who likes to go shirtless when he parties. The beauty of this deal is much more than — here it comes — skin deep.
Tennessee has a core group of talent — specifically a superb running game and very good defense — that one season ago went 13-3. Kerry Collins is on his last legs and VY is a quarterback who can only use his legs. It’s clear Jeff Fisher and the Titans staff have exactly ZERO confidence in VY.
The same is true for Quinn in Cleveland. Head coach Eric Mangini gave Quinn a legit chance to win the job and Quinn never did a whole lot to make the decision for Mangini. But there are coaches and scouts who believe Quinn truly does have the skill set and potential to be a good NFL quarterback. Put him in a solid environment, surrounded by quality coaches and good complementary talent and he could make plays. That’s Tennessee.
As for VY, a move to Cleveland would offer Mangini a nice Wildcat-type threat for the future and other options with Young on the field. Mangini already has proved he’s willing to make the bold trade and he could be just the disciplinarian-type that VY needs. And make no mistake, the Browns still would draft a quarterback in 2010. VY would be an expensive role-player next year, but his cap number is roughly the same as Quinn’s and his contract would be much less moving forward.”
-This is all speculation but would you do this trade if we were given the chance?
Vince Young in Cleveland? I couldn’t imagine that ever happening.. I am sure that if the Titans truly wanted Brady Quinn, this administration would be just fine getting back a couple low-end draft picks and some special teams players.
#5 hahaha yes very true. who am I kidding, the browns would not get good talent back when they make trades, just 5th and 6th round picks
Can you imagine Cribbs in that Dolphins Wildcat offense? I can see why Miami would want this. I would definitely be sad to see Cribbs go since he is my favorite (and probably best) Browns player. I agree with everyone else in that this will likely not happen, but seriously, give this guy a contract!
Agree w/ David. If there is one guy on this team that deserves a new contract, it’s Josh Cribbs. The man does it all for this team and it would leave so many holes if we’d trade him away. I would really HATE for the Browns to trade him.
In a way, he represents the heart of everything that is Cleveland by going out everyday and giving 110%, no matter the situation or his feelings on things. He seems to be one of those athletes that the Cleveland fans cling for a source of hope in good times and bad. I would hate for him to get traded b/c he’s one of the few bright spots that this teams has on a weekly basis. I don’t know, but I may be alone on this sentiment.
Exactly what does the guy have to do to get paid? Yes, e tried the WR role, and it didn’t work too well. But he’s also run the ball well (albeit sparsely), and his returns have been the single highlight-worthy part of just about every game this season…..well that and Dave Zastudil’s punting. Pay the man–he’s obviously important.
People who float trade rumors should present valid reasons why both sides would consider the deal. Otherwise, please ignore, even on the slowest news day when you need filler.
Please ignore him if he doesn’t convincingly state why the Browns might trade their best player, who is under their thumb for years contract-wise, for TGJ, an average guy at the end of his first-round contract. Come on, it ain’t money. Modell aside, it’s really really hard for an NFL owner to go broke with revenue sharing.
First, the usual “OMG someone somewhere says LBJ is Staying/Leaving” and now this, in one afternoon. What’s up, WFNY?
@9
Right you are. The Browns would be nuts to deal Cribbs.
He’d be even more valuable if we had an offensive coordinator who had some imagination.
@ Harv – The original article states that the Dolphins have interest in Cribbs. Honestly, it’s about as obvious as stating that water is wet. But I think coupled with the management’s trading K2 when he was clamoring for more money (and then he subsequently got it from Tampa Bay) this is something to worry about, even when the chances are quite remote that something will happen. It’s worth discussion, no?
What would it take to convince you why the Browns would trade their best player – they already have traded arguably their two best players previous in K2 and Braylon. I realize the rumor itself may not hold a lot of weight, but there’s precedence for the team to trade away guys who want more money and have clamored for it.
I’m not saying the Browns SHOULD trade him – just that it’s out there and who knows if it’s possible.
Check that. I directed my post @10.
If it’s for Ronnie Brown & Ted Ginn, then I’m listening…
@11 Cribbs with Daboll is shades of Pryor with the Vest: explosive talent directed by a coach unwilling/unable to utilize it to its fullest potential. Both situations are frustrating.
No f-ing way. Right, give him a new contract and lock him up.
Quick, someone check realty listings wherever Cribbs lives!
@15
B-bo,
Yep, it’s the same old story of coaches trying to make guys fit their system instead of making their system fit the players. Pounding square pegs into round holes.
@Denny
Scenarios are not at all the same. With both K2 and Edwards the Browns were in a position in which they had to either trade or get nothing from either player. With Cribbs, we have him under contract for several more years and he’s already shown this year that he will not hold out. There’s no leverage with which the Cribbs camp could reasonably force a trade.
Also, I think the way Tampa’s season is going reinforces that the trade was the right move for the Browns. A highly paid receiving tight end clearly does not make a bad team good.
I say throw in a draft pick and see if we can get R. Williams too. I am sure we could get Ginn straight up for Cribbs and Williams would be a nice addition for the next year and a half. Don’t get me wrong, I love Cribbs but he wasn’t what we needed at WR and I know Ginn hasn’t had the best NFL career to date but coming home may help. Also, he wouldn’t be much of a downgrade at returner. Then go ahead and send Quinn to the Titans for VY….if we are not going to be efficient then we might as well be athletic.
sorry but a kick returner doesn’t deserve big money. he’s a one trick pony.
This would never happen. Its not a trade with NYJ.
@Denny: the difference is the contracts and the cancers. I would like to obtain Sanchez for Quinn. Also, $1,000 for my used blackberry. Doesn’t make my blabber worthy of discussion.
Agree with #21. Love to see Cribbs play, but needs to touch the ball more often and that ain’t happening. He’d probably make a great safety, but that’s not happening either.
Cribbs for Ginn even up.
I wanna build a summer home in Brasky’s crotch!
Wow – it’s hard to envision a scenario where they would trade Cribbs. Ginn is intriguing, but he’s been a disappointment and Cribbs is a star – an even up trade makes no sense.
If teams get serious and start throwing around high draft picks, then the Browns should listen, but I’d just like to see them give him a damn contract extension.
I say make this trade if we get more than just Ginn Jr. back. Cribbs CAN’T play WR. He’s just not good enough, Ginn Jr. is starting to come into his own now and with a guy like DA throwing to him, he may just be good. Remember No Arm Pennington is throwing to him down there in Miami. He’d fair a lot better with a big armed QB.
Yes Cribbs is a good returner, ok GREAT returner. But, that’s all he is unfortunately. If he’s gonna want some big deal, he isn’t really worth it. I’ll be sad to see him go but that doesn’t mean it’d be bad for our team. I’d rather get Ronnie Brown some how though.
Please, no. Mangini says he wants “character guys” and there isn’t a better example of this than Josh. Most Browns fans were behind the Braylon move b/c he is a jerk and we got it. But, if Mangini trades Cribs, then to me it contradicts what he’s been saying about the kinds of players he wants to build this team around. I get that Josh doesn’t touch the ball on offense much, but his play on special teams alone can keep us in games (if our QB can trow for more than 2 completions). Please, please, please don’t trade Josh. Besides Thomas, he’s the only other guy on this team I can brag about to friends.
hey S-Dub have you been living under a rock? Pennington won’t ever put on a dolphins uniform anymore, Chad henne is the QB for the Dolphins, and to all Browns fans, are you people stupid? Someone said Ronnie for cribs? Ronnie brown is considered one of the best players in all of football, he can catch, run, throw the ball, he can do everything, and no the dolphins won’t trade Ginn for Cribbs, i can see the dolphins trading away a 2nd round pick and 6th for Cribbs but that’s it.
You guys have got to be kidding me! Cribbs wants Hester money, which would be 44 million. He a kick returner and a gunner for christs sake! He has no buisness being on the offense. I would however love to see what he could do as a saftey. Probally not much, but it would be interesting to see. Good ridance Josh, take Phil Dawson with ya! I believe Cribbs gets all the credit when its the rest of the special teams that make the big returns happen.
Here’s the thing about a Cribbs/Ginn trade. We all know, whether we’d like to admit it or not is an entirely different scenario, Ginn is a one dimensional player. He is a deep threat and possibly a great punt returnman. There is a way to stop Ginn and it’s been shown over and over again in the League. You hit him on the line. Make him think, take him out of his comfort zone, he’s not the brightest bulb. Then again, he has the potential to be a playmaker on a team with a talented receiving corp; which the Browns are not. Ginn would be a nice talented addition to the Browns very thin corp but expect number similar to his Dolphins numbers without help on the outside and help in the pocket.
Now Cribbs, we all love Cribbs for his special teams. ST is a VERY important aspect of the game. BUT, lets not get caught up in numbers and big plays yet. Return men have short lived success. I think Cribbs is on the downside of his special teams pro-bowl career. He knows that too, which is why he’s trying to make the Hester-transition… The 3 best returnmen in the 2000’s… Dante Hall, Devin Hester, Joshua Cribbs… The first two were GREAT for 4 seasons. Then tried to make the transition to receiver. Hester has been OK as a receiver, Hall failed. Cribbs is looking like a failure at wideout. I think this will be Cribbs last season as a impact return man and if we can get a starting receiver for him then pull the trigger.
I hate shipping off the guy who seems like he scores more than our offense. But, I think this is the best possible situation for the upcoming years. Another BUT we take nothing less than Ginn. Or a 2nd round draft pick. Or we package picks for Ronnie Brown. The Dolphins want an electric player.. Edwards/Cribbs.. we want a starter or more EARLY picks.
So Mary Kay Cabot from Cleveland.com is reporting that 6 teams are interested in Joshua Cribbs… Kansas City, Oakland, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, San Fransisco, and Miami.
KC- They are fed up with Larry Johnson, but he’s not the Larry Johnson of 2 years ago. Who do they have to offer us besides a top 5 pick, which they wouldn’t/shouldn’t offer for Cribbs.. PASS Would like to get Derrick Johnson (aint happenin)
Oakland- I would LOVE to get Nnamdi Asomugha and Richard Seymore. I heard the RaidAAS are having a fire sale, everybody except young talented guys McFadden, Russell?, Heyward-Bey, and Murphy (my guesses) are up for trades. I doubt they would part with Nnamdi for Cribbs.. But I think Cribbs and a second would be worth Asomugha. Throw in a fourth for Seymore and our D is changed overnight. Oh, Mike Bush would be a nice addition to our backfield.. but I think Harrison and Davis will own it next year, not enough room.
Indy- That’s a sexy team. 5-0. But they lack depth at every position. PASS
JAX- Uh, Maybe Johnny Henderson to get some pass rush or Reggie Nelson to fill gaps at Safety.. But I doubt JAX will part with those.. Best addition would be draft picks.. I don’t like trading known talent for draft picks… cough, Kellen for 2nd rounder (ROBO) cough..
San Fran- Vernon Davis (not likely). Arnaz Battle (wouldn’t be happy with).. secondary (would accept)
Miami- Ted Ginn (already talked about) Ronnie Brown [(would love, ain’t happenin (horrible English)] Still Smokin Williams (possible, Mangini wouldn’t want, Would not fit with team after this season. Too many running backs next year) Gibril Wilson (would be amazing, ain’t happenin)
Apparently, the Browns are going with the novel idea of trying to win games without ANY underlying talent.
Ginn has been playing the wrong position since he left Glenville. #1 CB in the country coming out of High School and Tressel makes him a wide receiver. Other than blowing away a handful of slow big-ten corners, what has he ever done at the position to make you think he’s ever going to make full use of his physical tools. Ginn should have been made into a corner. With his speed and size, he would’ve been awesome. Even now, I’m not sure it’s too late.
are u brown fans stupid Ronnie brown for josh cribbs or ted ginn both of them are better that cribbs not on special teams but as an over all player they are better and the browns are stupid they will trade there best players away for a 3rd and 6th round pick just like they did with braylon i agree with that one guy a 2nd and 6th round pick for cribbs and that should be enough and throw camarillo or heartline or bess in there or something but theres no way were trading brown away or ginn because ginn is turning into our franchise wide reciever
I can absolutely see why the Dolphins would want Cribbs.
But there’s no way we can trade this guy.
Give him his money already.
You already killed K2, Braylon, and Brady – what, are we going to trade Joe Thomas next too b/c he wasn’t a former Jet or a Mangini guy?
As a huge Phins fan I can tell you that we are definitely interested in a KR but have just signed Kory Sheets to do this.
And the idea that we would trade our best WR for a KR who has <200 career receiving yards is absolutely insane. The reporter who came up with that stroke of genius should be forced to stand in the corner for the rest of the day.
One thing is for certain, if Cribbs is or would be trades-his new team would rip up his absurd contract IMMEDIATELY and pay the man. For those advocating trading Cribbs, consider that this mess would be like without the field position he provides on a constant basis. If Mankinis won’t pay Cribbs by the bye-week, they should DEMAND a trade in the off-season.
For those willing to give up on a first round QB without ever giving him a legitimate chance for the rumoured Vince Young, check out Tennessee’s evaluation of such. VY this time last year tried to kill himself, is mentally unstable, not emotionally even close to leading an NFL team, and scouts unmanimously know he cannot make NFL throws. His throwing mechanics resemble a girl’s.
“Patience”.
@30 I agree!!!
Either use Cribbs in the wildcat or get him out of the offense. He’s not a WR (and def not a #2 WR). I’m all for running Cribbs out of the backfield or letting him throw now and then, but if they aren’t going to do that, put him at safety.
The man isn’t only a great KR/PR, but he also was the first guy down on kickoff coverage. Put him at safety and let him lay out guys coming over the middle. Could you imagine Cribbs blitzing the QB? That wouldn’t work?
Or they can keep sending him over the middle while DA hangs him out to dry (on a 6 yard route on 3 and 8).
(he’d be a great fit in Miami’s wildcat, no?)
My feelings about how the Browns are treating BQ aside – I still like Young.
@Isis: It’s interesting that you’ll be sensitive to Delonte’s mental instability but seem to be coming down hard on VY for the same thing.
Vince Young is too mistake prone for Mangini.
If Lerner adds being cheap to being incompetent, we’re in big trouble.
And what has Josh Cribbs done this year?
Cribbs has a contract, for the next 4 years, making at least 10-20 times if not more than what most of us are probably making to do something that we’d do for free in a heartbeat. he didn’t do himself any favors in the offseason, and he hasn’t helped himself on the field most of this year. they eliminated the wedge on kick returns, and that was his key. He hasn’t had too many great breakaways, and his WR contributions are not there.
[…] as an update to yesterday’s report, Eric Mangini stated today that he has no interest in moving Pro Bowl return man (and wide […]
@ #32
Do you even watch football? You can have G. Wilson for a set of new shoulder pads and a tube of ben gay. You must be crazy to think that the Dolphins would trade R.Brown or R.Williams for anyone not named Adrian Peterson. BTW Ricky got an extension and has openly said next year is his last = GOING NOWHERE. Cribbs and a 2 for the best corner in football? Seymour and Nnmadi for Cribbs a 2 , and a 4?!? Stick to soccer. Florio should be demoted for this article.
Are you guys serious with your pay the man comments. He has a contract for another four years, if you let him out of his contract then every player we have that has a good year will want the same thing. The diffrerence between k2 and Braylon is they were on the last year of their contracts and were never going to sign with us, no shot of winning so we got all we could for them. I love cribbs but get serious he is a st player, he us worth more then we are paying him but not as much as he and his agent think.
