The Week That Was in Ohio Football

Its almost over, its almost over… “I don’t think any Indians season has ever lasted as long as this one has, at least not in my memory. That year when a couple of guys died in spring training, I’m sure that was worse, but we weren’t as intimate with the team back then — certainly, those who were out of town weren’t — when you were lucky to catch one Indians game on TV all year. With the access and immediacy and depth of coverage provided by the internet, we can totally immerse ourselves in our favorite ballclub. As a result, we have been totally immersed in misery for more than 100 days.” [Jay/Lets Go Tribe]

Brazil won the gold medal at the FIBA Americas Championship. This post is worth reading if only for the great picture of Anderson Varejao. [TrueHoop]

Its Ohio. Doesn’t happen any other way. “Phew. That was fun, wasn’t it? Nothing like starting the season on the scariest roller coaster ride in the park versus a simple stroll down the lazy river sipping a cold one. Still, though I have lots of opinions just like you, it’s probably best to remind ourselves that the 31-27 win over Navy was against an unconventional opponent meaning we really have no idea how good, or bad, this team might be. I view this game as far more positive than last year’s season opener, despite the score, as we saw plenty to be excited about mixed in with the stuff that made us want to share our Buckeye necklaces with the living room drywall.” [Chris/ElevenWarriors]

Um, about Terrelle Pryor’s choice of homage on his eyeblack this weekend… [SportsbyBrooks]

And Pryor may want to look into having a team official hang out with him during interviews before he says stuff like this again. [The World of Isaac]

Just a quick note: Given the Labor Day holiday, things may be a bit slow around these parts today. Unless you’re working you should be outside anyways. We won’t have many more weekends like this one! Cheers, folks.

I’m an OSU grad, and I was at the game. Of course I love everything abut OSU and what it represents, including the current QB. That said, I sure hope Tressel takes care of the Vick homage that Terrelle Pryor so pathetically displayed Saturday for all to see. For many of us, that’s a reprensible persona-and should not be so proudly displayed by someone honoring the prestige and heritage while representing a major state institution. Certainly Terrelle has a right to and can look to anyone he pleases as a role model; but while on the field he has responsibility to represent the University and the State of Ohio. I’d bet dollars to donuts that the coaching staff was not aware of what TP had plastered in black.
I’ll cut him slack, of course. He’s a kid and seemingly plays with pride and passion for OSU. But, this better be nipped in the bud. Go Bucks.
Happy holiday everyone. So who else is workin today?
I’m a workin.
Re: Pryor. It wasn’t the smartest thing one could do, regardless of how he feels about it (and saying the right words and getting the word “not” before “everyone kills people” helps a lot). If Vick is a guy he’s looked up to as an athlete, that’s fine – makes sense given TP’s skill set.
Look at the amount of support that Vick has gotten from other athletes, former teammates, etc. since the details started coming out in 06 and think about it. Pryor has seen a large number of athletes state their support for Vick and likely felt it was his opportunity to do the same. An aside: I have no problem with athletes coming out and supporting Vick getting a second chance – but morons like Clinton Portis talking about how dog fighting is NBD in 06 I have no sympathy for.
Isis, I agree that he needs to think harder about what he does, especially when representing a state-funded institution. And yes, lots of (white) people will spend the rest of their lives getting on their moral high horse and decrying everything Mike Vick will ever do. But Vick has done his time. He went bankrupt from everything that has happened over the past three years. He spent two years in federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison. He seemingly has reformed.
There are a lot of people who will never give Vick the second chance that he is afforded in our society. While I don’t agree with this, it’s understandable to dislike Vick and be “against” what he does with his life. But to boycott Ohio State because ONE SINGLE PLAYER on the team decided that he would do what he’s seen so many other athletes do and support a fellow football player who is completely over-reactionary and childish.
That was truly an interesting quote by T.P. I was kinda hoping he would have said something like it was honoring Michael Vick on his road to redemption, but the “everyone kills people” works too I guess.
I’m going to start wearing contraversial eyeblack to work. I sort of like it. Plus it will cut off the glare from my computer screen.
Denny, it’s not a black/white issue-please. And the issue is not whether or not Vick has done his time or deserves a second chance-that’s for others to decide on their own. His conduct was beyond reprensible, and it was innapropriate for Pryor to use his status as a soundoff on that issue. Nobody in creation is talking about boycotting Ohio State, merely expressing a problem with using that forum in that manner. You can agree or disagree, as always. But, please don’t insinuate it’s a black/white issue-it’s a CONDUCT issue.
And, watch and see if TP wears it again. I can guarantee he won’t……..aka Jim Tressel will handle it.
This guy right here.
Look – it surely wasn’t a smart thing to do. I think we all agree on that much. But he’s an adult and can say what he wants. If we’re really going to get in a hissy-fit about athletes at state-funded institutions using their status as a platform for their message, then let’s get rid of all of the messages to be fair – including any “John 3:16” messages. Even though these are much more vanilla and not seen as offensive by the majority, we still have laws advocating separation of church and state. And since the student-athletes represent state-funded universities, wouldn’t it be appropriate to ban these messages as well –
Most everyone will scoff at this notion, because an athlete doing this and “spreading the word of the Lord” is seen as benign and admirable. But the second a kid puts something on his eye black that more people don’t like, it’s a big deal. There’s a part of our Constitution that advocates for free speech, and he’s allowed to do as he wishes. That he may or may not anger people or be abusing his position as a role model is irrelevant in this regard.
Re: him wearing it again, he’s made his point. Why would he need to do it again – We’ll have no proof that it was Tress or TP deciding he’s made his point already, so we can’t attribute his not wearing it again either way.
