Browns Notes: OG Rex Hadnot Injures Knee, Team Waives DB Don Carey
August 7, 2009Dear Boston Red Sox, You Need Carl Pavano
August 7, 2009If you thought that the Indians were done trading just because of a measly deadline, think again.
Per team media relations:
The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has completed a trade with the Minnesota Twins, sending RHP Carl Pavano to Minnesota in exchange for a player to be named. The Indians will receive this player on or before September 1. To take Pavano’s spot on the 25-man roster, the Indians have recalled LHP Rafael Perez from AAA Columbus.
This means that Pavano was in fact waived within the last three days. He made 21 starts for the Tribe this year going 9-8 with a 5.37 ERA, and managed to stay off of the disabled list. A small feat in and of itself. I would expect Justin Masterson to take Pavano’s spot in the rotation as Perez will then slot in for Masterson.

Which also frees up a spot for Laporta…
I’m guessing this trade just sealed our everyday LF for the next 6 years.
Sorry. Didn’t read the whole press release. Rats.
Nice! I hope we can get someone that will be able to contribute sometime next year…Pavano was a nice addition, but he was not what we were looking for long-term
Something would have to happen to a position player to bring in LaPorta. Sizemore might eventually get placed on the disabled list for good, but more likely than not LaPorta will just come here when rosters expand September 1st.
So how does this affect the payroll? Will this help the $16 million deficit Dolan’s looking at next year? Gee, I sure hope so!
@#4 Jacob. Are we still carrying 13 pitchers? I guess that just seems like overkill to me at this point if we are going to move Masterson into the rotation. I’m still befuddled by their decision to keep LaPorta down there. A September call-up won’t teach him to hit ML hitting; he’ll be facing the same chumps he’s facing now.
I was wrong in thinking Pavano was untradable. This is a case where any dollars saved is a good thing.
Jacob-I’m sorry, but it is inexcusable for LaPorta not to be brought up until Sept. 1. That is a sham. The Crowe AB’s should ALL be going to LaPorta. I repeat, something is amiss.
So does that make Jeremy Sowers, the team’s best starting pitcher right now?
@8 – No it makes Aaron Laffey the team’s best starting pitcher and thats actually a good thing.
Isis – I too think it is strange they havent called up LaPorta. What could possibly be the reasoning? Just odd…
Free Matt LaPorta?
If LaPorta was called up today, that would give him 83 days on the Major League roster for the season. If you accrue 86 days, you are eligible for salary arbitration the following season.
Just a hunch, but now that the possibility of salary arbitration has been squashed…LaPorta could get a call-up at any time.
It is inexcusable to not have LaPorta on the big league roster? The Indians are currently 46-62 and I don’t think anything they could do in the final two months of this season could be deemed inexcusable. Sure fans want to see LaPorta up there right now, but he was just recently in a two-week slump and the team does not have more roster spots free.
Gimenez is extremely valuable right now as a utility infielder, outfielder and bullpen catcher. Marte has served his time in Triple-A and can’t go back to Columbus this year without clearing waivers again. Crowe as well has served his time in the minors, appearing in a grand total of 308 games for Akron, Buffalo and Columbus.
LaPorta meanwhile, as many people forget, played just 17 regular season games for Akron last season and has now appeared in a grand total of 183 games above Single-A. His arrival in Cleveland on August 7th to play a dozen more games more than arriving on September 1st will not inherently and specifically limit the Indians from competing in 2011 or 2012. What matters more to the Indians is seeing him play consistently day-to-day at whatever level right now, and in the off-season working his tail off in order to play every day for Cleveland in April.
Jacob,
With all due respect there’s a lot they could do that should be deemed inexcusable.
It would be inexecusable not to have traded Pavano, DeRosa, Betancourt, and Garko.
It would be inexcusable to allow Grady to suffer long-term elbow problems by playing him everyday.
It would be inexcusable not to find out what they have in Marte.
It would be inexcusable to allow Kerry Wood’s vesting option to kick in in a lost year.
That’s just a beginning, but I think there are plenty of things they could do that are inexcusable in a losing season.
I think it’s wrong (not inexcusable) to “protect” LaPorta from MLB pitching this year. What’s the point? His bat’s ready, right?
Should also be noted that Pavano was actually a very good Shapiro signing regardless of how Pavano or the season turned out. Had he stunk, the guaranteed money was small. If he regained form and we contended, a steal at $5.7M. As it actually turned out Minnesota is paying most of his contract in our last year. And if Pavano stays healthy, he’s in line for a multi-year from somebody. Minnesota is probably making only a very fringe prospect available to us, but any warm body is a bonus. So Shapiro: kudos to you, sir. Now about all the other fiascos …
@12
Right on. Good post.

Isn’t the sole reason to keep Laporta in the minors to keep his service time limited?
i don’t think so Macnip. much wiser people can correct me, but I think that time has long passed.
I too, was under the impression that perhaps the Indians were keeping LaPorta in the minors in an attempt to limit his mlb service time so that we gain an extra year out of his contract. I’m not sure how minor league contracts work, though, so I could be way off base.
@ #18-20
The clock on major league service time starts ticking when the player is called up…once you start the clock, you cannot stop it.
This is what makes the Indians decision to call up LaPorta, give him spotty playing time and then ship him back to AAA all the more baffling…they’ve essentialy cost the team one “cheap” year of LaPorta’s service for no concievable reason.
Actually, I was wrong…I knew there was something bone-headed about the Indians decision, but I spoke incorrectly. 🙂
It’s not that the Service Time clock doesn’t stop (it does), it is more that LaPorta spent a solid 20+ days with the major league club. I believe that makes him much more likely to be arbitration eligible after his second “full” season (as a Super Two player), which means he will be much more expensive for the Indians as a result.
And, since I remember hearing some things about how the Indians owners *may* be having some money problems, anything that costs this team extra money probably isn’t a good thing…?
Thanks for the clarification JD. As much as it pains me to wait, I actually am exciting about the 2011+ Indians. We might be stacked.
The main reason I think LaPorta is still in Columbus is that he needs every-day ABs, and we all know Wedge isn’t going to give them to him.
That’s my story, anyway, and I’m sticking to it.
