All Cliff Lee Needs is One Mic, Two Runs
July 17, 2009Is Fausto Carmona Calming Down?
July 17, 2009Only in the minor leagues right? Canal Park in Akron played host to 2 major events last night. Well, ‘major’ might be a bit of a stretch. The Aeros (sans-all stars) played the Bowie Baysox and the Cleveland Sports Blog Network was there in force. First the game- a slugfest that the Aeros came up on the short side 13-11. The team certainly never quit, despite being down 8-1 after the top of the third and missing their all-star players who arrived at the park minus their gear after a connecting flight was missed. By the way, WFNY staffer Jacob denied any involvement in the Cream Stick race, despite showing up just moments after Maple took first. You know how you never see Superman and Clark Kent in the same place? Just sayin…
The other event was just as entertaining in my book. Thanks to Don Delco, Brendan Bowers, Vince Grzegorek, and the gang from Cleveland Frowns for making the trip! In addition, it was great to meet our contest winners, and Omar who read about the outing and came to join us. All told there were roughly 25 of us talking, joking, heckling and just enjoying a good game with new friends. Did I mention it was Thirsty Thursday? Nice to see the gang respect their limits as well. Class outing.
One thing I noticed while sitting and watching the group interact- almost to a man, this group would talk your ears off. Makes sense, since a good portion of the group were sports bloggers that they would have something to say in response to what was happening around them.
I hope you can make the next outing. I know I won’t miss it.

I HAD A BLAST!!! I wanna thank all of the WFNY staff. I would definitly do it again, even sans the free tickets.
and remember …. Thirsty Thursday loves ‘SAFE!!’
Definitely worth the trip. That five-spot in the first definitely helped Thirsty Thursday!
Great time meeting everyone – can’t wait to do it again.
I like to think the full beer on the right is placed there in my absence.
My parents went in my stead, because I had a conflict, and they LOVED IT! Thanks so much. My mom won’t shut up about how it was so much more entertaining than watching the Tribe.
I’ve seriously gotta convince her to start commenting in these forums. She rants about Wedge like Adam Carolla talking about the carpool lane. It’s hilarious.
@David Stern- that makes soooo much more sense now.
What does? The fact that there were two old people sitting in those seats? 🙂
That was a good time. I’m with Brendon…I’d pay to roll with that group again. Thanks again!
From the people that were there, what were you wearing so we can put a face to a name? I had the Beanie wells Jersey, and OSU ball cap.
[…] a Motley Crew out in Akron, Carmona took the hill for the Columbus Clippers and carried a shutout into the seventh inning […]
Black camo bandanna and black t-shirt. My brother-in-law and I were sitting next to you. Guess we never officially introduced ourselves haha. My bad.
I still managed to have a good time despite that baseball game going on in front of us. I’m glad we were able to get together and put faces to names. I guess the most shocking thing was how genuinely cool everyone was.
I’m looking forward to doing this again in the near future and with a bigger group.
@ Denny, the beer on the right was poured to the ground in your honor.
I remain calm in my defense that I have never taken part in the ACME Cream Stick race this season. Although I do appreciate the linkage to the press release that I wrote last night, woo props to Media Relations.
Were one of you trying to start the wave in the fifth inning?
@JonCole – Haha! Yeah, nice to meet you again. BTW, love Thousand Foot Krutch
“@ Denny, the beer on the right was poured to the ground in your honor.”
You owe me a dollar.
@ Scott – You can take it out of my non-pay.
You know, the Clippers are in town today…
Thanks to ALL , me and my son had a BLAST… Very entertaining Bunch of GOOD People.
Had a great time, it was nice to meet everyone! For the record I was the brown man in the dress shirt and tie.
Great recap Rick, and great to meet everyone last night! The Frowns crew had a blast. Really nice of you to say about ‘respecting limits.’ Definitely looking forward to doing it again, and with a bigger group.
Rick linked to it above, but here’s our recap post: http://www.clevelandfrowns.com/2009/07/thirsty-thursday-take-over.html
Mr. Batchi, I’m assuming you are who I think you are, as noted re: “Perry” in Frowns post.
Also, I’m the guy who was wearing this shirt: http://www.clevelandfrowns.com/2008/07/our-new-t-shirt.html
Hope everyone has a great weekend.
My favorite part of that frowns- Rick linked to it above, but here’s…
You know. Because me linking to it above wasn’t enough!
Ha!
Frowns- you had me busting up so hard in my office reading your article today about what Thirsty Thursday is a fan of. Classic.
Could you imagine if there is a rain delay on Thirsty Thursday? Thirsty Thursday is a HUGE fan of rain delays.
Hey, very cool to be a part of the first gathering of the group that lives sports! @20: you should get the award for most energetic. I think you had a conversation with at least all the 25 in our group & neighbors too. Omar, I’m glad you made the effort and get the best-dressed award. And of course Rick, you have the most miles to get there. I wish Rock would have been there, would have bought him a beverage. Great time, and great recap too from #20 on his site…
Haha…thanks guys.
@4: If your parents are the happy couple in our section that I think they were, they were super nice, and I will verify that they were all smiles (in a good way).
@7: I would too!
@21: I wanted to be extra careful that nobody missed our recap, because one might have thought it was just an i.d. link to the site itself rather than a link to a recap post. People need to know about Thirsty Thursday!
See, @22: No doubt! Thirsty Thursday knows every rain dance in the book!
@23: Thanks for the award! And I agree with your assessment on the others as well.
Can we agree that, with Rick excluded as organizer, Batchi and Son win MVP of the night?
Also, YMCA pic coming up at Frowns.
Also, as reflected in the comments here, I can hardly imagine a better place for such an event than an Akron Aeros game. It worked on so many levels.
@24, 25: More photos and a second recap up at Frowns: http://www.clevelandfrowns.com/2009/07/thirsty-thursday-recap-part-2-with.html
Next time I ditch the wife and hang out with you guys…
