Ohio State’s Carlos Hyde “on the radar” for Browns at No. 35

May 7, 2014All eyes may be on Johnny Manziel, but the NFL Draft’s wild card appears to be his pink Escalade-buying peer, Teddy Bridgewater. Bridgewater, who has seen his name listed anywhere from No. 1 overall to the second round, appears to be linked to the Cleveland Browns as their general manager, Ray Farmer, is reportedly “enamored” with the Louisville product.
Lest any Browns fans grow concerned, said level of interest, while given a strong connotation, does have it’s limits as Farmer would reportedly like to land Bridgewater with the team’s 26th-overall selection as opposed to the much-discussed No. 4 pick. Alas, in this curious case, “enamored” loses out to “value.”
Bridgewater has slipped on some teams’ draft boards because of a lackluster Pro Day. Farmer, nevertheless, has reportedly had a fascination with Bridgewater since last fall. Naturally, one should grow skeptical of sourced reports leading up to the draft as teams begin leaking information that may or may not be an attempt to toy with opposing general managers—the good ol’ “smokescreen,” as the kids say.
Though widely compared to Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel and Central Florida’s Blake Bortles, Bridgewater is ranked as the top quarterback in this year’s class by WFNY’s Joe Gilbert. He finished second in the NCAA in 2013 with a 71 percent completion percentage and set a school record with a career mark of 68.3 percent over his tenure with the Cardinals.

“Reportedly” enamored! Let’s hit the story link – it’s reported by “league sources.” Who are the league sources (as opposed to “team” sources)? Who would have any interest in leaking true team thinking to Tom Reed? Hmmm, not a guy who would get fired if outed. So if it’s not from inside Berea it would have to be … Wait … it’s coming to me, getting a vision – coiffed hair, 3 cellies, one devoted only to calls from player moms. Ok, I’ll buy it. Reportedly.
“Bridgewater has slipped on some teams’ draft boards because of a lackluster Pro Day.”
Dang, this sounds pretty logical but how did we verify this again? Oh right, the team headquarters tour that accidentally included the pre-Pro Day player board, and then compared to the recently leaked camera phone pic of the latest player board. Hey, teams, better tighten up security. Louis Lipps sinks ships.
Ah, the hyperventilating, sloppy ecstasy of Silly Season. Where early mocks are cited until they magically morph into what GMs were thinking, and self-serving agent prattle is a “league source.” Well, why the hell not. Our annoyance at having listened to it only lasts until the first OTA.
Only one more day. One day more. I feel like Jean Valjean is about to pop out from behind the curtain and break into song…
I saw Bridgewater play probably 4 times last year, and each time I really, really liked him. He was the QB I wanted the Browns to get. But then everyone started telling me he sucked and that his pro day was really bad, and so I cooled on him.
All of which is to say I have no clue about anything this year. I think getting a really great player at #4 and Bridgewater at #26 is pretty intriguing. I would be totally cool with that outcome.
#allegedly
Just think, next year they want to push “it” back two weeks later than this year under the guise of making it a travelling show.
WFNY continuing to report the draft week rumors. this must be the hardest part of the job
Four months ago, I thought I would watch the draft with pizza and beer. As the draft nears and I have all this “new” information at my disposal, I am reportedly enamored with wings, and whiskey is rising fast up my beverage big board. However, that may just be a smoke screen when in fact, I have been letting friends and family leak sourced info that the grill may come into play, despite originally being much lower down my menu. And I may trade back my beer and whiskey for vodka, which wouldn’t satisfy any of the fans, but in the end, is the safe pick.
If he is “your guy”, take him at 4.
Don’t get cute. Just take him.
New GM or no I’m mortified the Browns will find a way to screw this up. Please don’t screw this up!
It’s like wearing an orange vest and picking up trash on the side of the freeway.

with everything we have seen the last 15 years, would you really doubt it?
I mean:

Is “enamored with” better than “intrigued by”? Both are probably higher on the board than “interested in,” but are they higher than “really interested in”? And what about “impressed with”? Where does that fit in?
Jeez, these experts know so much more than I do.
(Louis Lipps sinks ships. Nice.)
all of which are better than “on the radar” so Buckeye fans that wanted Hyde are out of luck there.
Jeez, you’re right. Man, I have so much to learn. I wish the draft wasn’t for another month.
well, then in 2015 you will be in for a treat
“intrigued by” means, I think, the brain trust guffawing about the gray matter of a potential first rounder passing out in his car 2 weeks before the draft. “Enamored with” is where they’re astonished that a guy with huge mitts who is big and lean and powerful and does great in drills has not yet, it seems, played football very well. As in: “Tom Heckert is enamored with Greg Little’s potential.”
Try covering the actual god-forsaken event
are you serious?
i had to explain it to a bunch of German tourists. It made America sound really, really dumb.
(btw – does anyone recognize these guys?)
Sadly yes
