Indians lose Giambi for 3-4 weeks
March 13, 2014The Browns sign TE Jim Dray, are you him?
March 13, 2014So, about all of that matched-offer-Julian-Edelman stuff..
Cincinnati wide receiver Andrew Hawkins officially signed the offer sheet proposed to him by the Cleveland Browns, and now it appears the Bengals will not match within their allotted time.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that the offer is a four-year deal worth $13.6 million in totalâmore than both amounts which were originally reportedâand that Hawkins stands to make $10.8 million in the first two years of the deal. This structure is not only in line with other deals the Browns have signed, but one that makes it increasingly difficult to match.
Albert Breer, also of NFL Network, reports that the Bengals are now unlikely to match.
B/c of the structure of Andrew Hawkins' now-signed offer sheet with the Browns, I'm told the Bengals rethought things, now unlikely to match

The Browns were thought to have moved on from Hawkins, a Toledo Rocket, aiming their contract-drawing pens at New England’s Julian Edelman, a Kent State Golden Flash. If these updated reports hold true, the team would be foolish to sink two free agent contracts into one package-based position, regardless of any mid-major Ohio ties.

Gotta bring all those native Ohioans home! Who else can we snag? Is Joey Galloway available?
I kid, I kid. I do like Hawkins. He was injured last year, but he abused the Browns several times the season before that.
Ginn would make 3 slot-WR FA that we could sign đ
it never made sense why the Bengals would match on Hawkins when he was behind AJ, Marvin, and Sanu. so, a bit of gamesmanship on their part I suspect (and ours with Edelman).
if we sign Edelman now, then we would actually have depth at WR, so I wouldn’t count it out just yet either (though if we did, then Benjamin might want to start packing his bags).
I bet Troy Smith is ready to come back from the CFL!
We DO need a savvy veteran QB to replace Jason Campbell.
“Get me Smith on line 1! Which Smith? I guess any Smith will do. And get me a Smith while I’m holding!”
I haven’t done an in-depth study or anything, but Hawkins and Edelman strike me as very similar players. They are both small with decent hands and good route-running ability. More quick than fast. I know Hawkins hasn’t done a lot of punt return, but I think that he could. Because of that, I don’t really see the point of grabbing both guys, but as you state, WR depth would be a very nice luxury to have.
They really won’t, or they’re just trying to delay the Browns’ ability to sign Edelman? The longer Edelman waits the more likely he signs with another team, then the Bengals can match on Hawkins to screw CLE.
Edelman is more than a one-package player. I think he proved that last season. He lined up all over the place, not just the slot.
Hmm. I think Hawkins has clocked a 4.3 forty (FWIW). That’s pretty “fast.”
He did say last year that he would “crawl to Cleveland” if the Browns would give him a shot. He meant that as a measure of his desire and commitment, and not some “kicking and screaming” thing.

What’d he run in the 100-yard dash?
Eleventeen
Cripes… that’s fast! I withdraw my comparison, unless Julian Edelman also runs an eleventeen.
I thought it was because his legs were broken?
Pffffftttt…..twelveteen for Edelman. might as well be ovaltine.
(translates to a 4.5 40time)
Edelman’s last time was Z x Î .â
I don’t know how we don’t sign them both.
Details.
hey, just in time for Pi day tomorrow
You can’t make this stuff up.
Hopefully Steve
yes, we definitely have the disciplined & winning team culture that can straighten out a malcontent like Steve Smith and keep him properly motivated throughout the year on and off the field.
why don’t they call it Round-tine?
Your sarcasm is showing.
while an oval is round, being round does not necessarily mean an oval. therefore, they wanted to be more specific for branding purposes.

what sarcasm?
(mouth-popping sounds)
That kind of versatility and explosiveness just won’t play in Cleveland. Send him across the middle, preferably right into Jerome Harrison.
The Bungles already cut Headhunter Harrison. Maybe he decides to rejoin the Old Man Defense?
wait. when did the Bungles sign Jerome Harrison and when did he start playing defense? Does Mangini know? I thought he killed Jerome off with those final 4 weeks of job-saving tactics!!!
(says the guy who typed Vereen instead of Verner earlier today)
Stop stepping on my dreams of bringing in as much once-elite talent that’s available
Why would they be foolish to sign Edelman? He only played 50% of his snaps from the slot, and had more catches as the #1 man.
Let’s all remember, we shouldn’t depend on a Rookie WR to be a starting target, no matter how high we draft him. And Josh Gordon is one celebratory blunt away from a year long suspension, not to mention he may cost a lot of money in two season. Depending upon how costly Edelman is, signing both should be considered.
Last year apparently. He actually had a pick-6 last year. The QB that threw it was cut yesterday.
wow. quite the feat. Jerome Harrison didn’t even play in the NFL last year and he had a pick-6?
đ
I feel shame.
Any futility is possible with Weeden trying to play QB. That’s why he got the axe.
Not with how deep this draft is with WRs, though. An Edelman + Hawkins signing would make me very concerned that we’re not planning to use any of our first 3 picks on wideouts, and I think that might be the strength of this draft.
personally, I don’t think an Edelman or Hawkins affects our draft for a WR2. Sign one and Cooper is likely gone. Sign both and Benjamin is likely gone. We still have a need for a WR2 but also would have some depth.
Edelman can play outside when needed, but is better in the slot. So, we can run different alignments and have a bunch of options at WR, which is something we have never had in the last 15yrs (even 2007 we had Braylon/JoeJ/Winslow but nothing behind them).
