The Ohio State Buckeyes didn’t make the national championship. They didn’t even make the College Football Playoff. But that doesn’t mean the season was a lost one in Columbus.
They beat Mich-Again, won their division, took down undefeated Wisconsin to win the Big Ten Championship, and beat USC to win the Cotton Bowl. Even with all those impressive feats, Ohio State’s best (and most memorable) game of the season was when Penn State came to Columbus in late October, three days before Halloween.
The game started with Heisman hopeful Saquon Barkley running the opening kick back for touchdown, giving Penn State an early 7-0 lead. The Nittany Lions then held leads of 14-0, 21-3, and even 28-10 in the second quarter. Trailing 28-17 at halftime, Ohio State allowed Penn State to score the first touchdown of the second half as well. Then the Buckeyes (finally) woke up.
After Penn State made a field goal with just under six minute remaining to give the Nittany Lions a 38-27 lead, something clicked for the scarlet and gray. Led by quarterback J.T. Barrett, Ohio State came back and took their first lead of the game at 39-38 with just under two minutes to go, a lead that the Buckeyes were able to hold.
Throughout Barrett’s time in Columbus, he had plenty of moments that could have defined his time as a Buckeye, but him leading Ohio State back to take down Penn State may just be atop the list.
It was such a special moment that Ohio State’s 2017 season trailer was all about that game. The video gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the comeback while including plenty of sights and sounds from the Horseshoe on that October day. It also takes you inside the locker room following the game as well.
The trailer is also titled “Long Live The Brotherhood”, which was Ohio State’s motto for much of the season. It meant that the team was more important than each individual and that every player was there for each other. The relationships made wouldn’t just be during the season, but they would last a lifetime.
While the scarlet and gray have performed quite well on the field, their video and graphic team has (somehow) outdone them off of it. Ever since Urban Meyer came back to Ohio State in 2012, social media and graphics have been an important part to his staff. They had some impressive trailers throughout Meyer’s tenure, previewing each matchup just days before they were to take place. But the one that the Buckeyes released on Friday, wrapping up the 2017 season, was the best yet.
It’s almost nine minutes long, but it’s well worth it. I suggest you not only sit down, but even stop what you are doing and watch this video. I promise you, you’ll miss college football season and want it to be September, when the 2018 season will kickoff for the Buckeyes.
